Burj Dubai Now World’s Tallest Freestanding Structure

Developers of the Burj Dubai today announced that the skyscraper, still under construction, has surpassed Toronto’s CN Tower to become the world’s tallest freestanding structure. The Burj is 555.3 meters tall to the CN Tower’s 553.3 meters.

Bloomberg reports: “Burj Dubai will eventually rise above the KVLY-TV mast in Blanchard, North Dakota, to become the world’s tallest structure, Emaar said, without giving a target height. The 628.8-meter mast is supported by guy-wires and so is not free-standing, according to Emaar. Emaar is the Middle East’s biggest real estate developer, and started building the $900 million, 160-storey Burj Dubai in 2004 to be the centerpiece of its $20 billion `Downtown’ project. The tower is facing delays of at least a year after Swiss contractor Schmidlin Ltd. Facade Technology went bankrupt, leaving it without external walls.”

In related news, developers of the nearby iPad building announced that it would now be the iPad Touch building.

Brian, to be fair it doesn’t have an exterior yet.

I was there in January – my friends live right next to the Burj Dubai. It was pretty neat waking up at 7 am and drinking my coffee while the armies of blue-suited construction workers started on the tower for the day.

You do realize it’s not finished, right? It will come to a point and be covered in mirrored glass when done. The concepts actually look quite nice – better than the Freedom Tower at least.

It looks so ridiculous there in the middle of what appear to be 2-6 story buildings. Are they planning on leveling all the businesses in a 1 mile radius to create a need for all that office space?

It looks like the decades old Trans-America building standing all alone surrounded by warehouses in South East downtown L.A.

” And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven;” – Gen 11:4

Funny, looks just like something that would have been built in biblical times
(or yes, Lord of the Rings).

A very ugly building that makes you wonder what the point really is. It’d be ONE thing if it was in Tokyo or New York or Hong Kong where it would blend in. Where it is now just looks like penis-worship or wanna-be nouveau-riche of the very worst kind.

Big dicks are great, but this sort of thing is not sustainable. Its an exploitation of finite resources. It’s succumbing to an illusion of what prosperity is all about. Its not in harmony with its physical environment. It’s sad really.

No exterior walls?… that doesn’t sound exactly safe lol

I don’t get the obsession with these enormous skyscrapers. its like a contest to see who can build the biggest dick

Even without its skin of mirrored glass I think it looks ten times better than the planned Freedom Tower.

And at least they aren’t trying to pad their height numbers with a thousand foot tall antenna.

Even without an enormous antenna this building is taller than the Freedom Tower WITH one.

I’m sure that with oil now at $80 a barrel and climbing they really don’t care what you think about it. It is better than the ‘Freedom Tower’ and it’s neo-Dallas counterparts.

Gay men crack me up!! You just have to read these comments to understand what kind of breed we are. Nothing can ever satisfy us. Not even a dick-shaped building in the middle of the desert. LOL. Y’all just kill me! Oh and the CN Tower? Boooring!! I live right next to it and it’s as boring as this unfinished piece of sand.
