Idaho Legislator Larry Craig Resigns from U.S. Senate

Craig

Idaho GOP Senator Larry Craig announced plans to resign from the Senate today, less than a week after news surfaced that he had been arrested in a Minneapolis airport men's room and had pleaded guilty to a disorderly conduct charge.

Craig's statement, made outside the Boise Train Depot:

"For most of my adult life, I've had the privilege of serving the people of Idaho. I am grateful for the opportunity they have given me. It has been a blessing.

"I am proud of my record and accomplishments and equally proud of the wonderful and talented people with whom I have had the honor and privilege to work and serve.

"I chose to serve because I truly love Idaho. What is best for Idaho has always been the focus of my efforts, and it is no different today.

"To the Idahoans I represent, to my staff, my Senate colleagues and, most importantly, my wife and our family, I apologize for what I have caused.

"I am deeply sorry.

"I have little control over what people choose to believe, but clearing my name is important to me and my family.

"Having said that, to pursue my legal options as I continue to serve Idaho would be an unwanted and unfair distraction from my job and for my Senate colleagues.

"These are serious times of war and conflict - times that deserve the Senate and our full nation's attention. There are many challenges facing Idaho that I'm currently engaged in, and the people of Idaho deserve a Senator who can devote 100 percent of his time and effort to critical state and national issues.

"Therefore, it is with sadness and deep regret that I announce that it is my intent to resign from the Senate, effective September 30. In doing so, I hope to allow for a smooth and orderly transition for my loyal staff, and for the person appointed to take my place at William Borah's desk. I have full confidence that Governor Otter will appoint a successor who will serve Idaho with distinction.

"I apologize to the people of our great state for being unable to serve out the term to which you have elected me. I hope you understand my decision to step aside.

"Few people have had the pleasure and privilege to represent Idaho for as many years as I have. Each day, each week, each year brought new challenges and opportunities to create a better life for Idahoans. I have enjoyed every moment and cannot adequately put into words how much I appreciate you giving me this chance. I hope you do not regret the confidence you have placed in me for all these years. I hope I have served you and our state to the best of my abilities.

"Lastly, Suzanne and I have been humbled by the outpouring of support we have received from our friends, our family, staff and fellow Idahoans - we are profoundly and forever grateful. Thank you."

  2. I couldn't be more thrilled watching this creep fall from republican grace and watch him squirm in front of the cameras. How many times has this Kapo sat in his republican seat in Congress, spouting anti-gay rhetoric with the fresh taste of a man in his mouth?

  3. Now, repeat after me:

David Vitter, David Vitter, David Vitter...

All GOP "family values" hypocrites need to go.

  4. Bless his little heart, but, I was kind of shocked that he didn't say again that he is not nor has he ever been gay!

Oh well, people get canned from jobs every day for being gay or thought to be, now maybe he can open a bathroom cleaning company or one that builds them with unique stalls for those who troll for sex in them, as gross as that is.

It's just too sweet to see a hypocrite and bigot go down in flames, LOL! But, the laughter will be short as the Guv of Idaho will in all likelihood put someone in more right wing nut than the one who just resigned.

  5. I'm sure his dear friend Mitt Romney, or the other antigay bigots with whom he chose to associate during his Senate tenure will embrace him warmly in the private sector. Or, perhaps he can cuddle up to (self-loathing gay porn star-turned-Ann Coulter best buddy) Matt Sanchez and they can trade gay bashing jokes... I hear Fla. Rep. Bob Allen is looking for a buddy to cruise public restrooms...Maybe they can take turns scrawling antigay graffiti on stall walls, performing unsolicited BJs, and scouting for undercover cops...?

Or, he can always become an Evangelical preacher.

  9. Peace out, fucker.
We need to carefully harness this opportunity so that it correctly reflects the evil of homophobia and closetedness. The Christians are already busy using it as an example of what they've said all along about us, that we chose to be gay, or at least that we choose to "do" gay. To them, he "chose" to solicit the cop, despite "actually" being straight, as "evidenced" by his marriage and kids. We have to nip that bullshit in the bud, boys and girls.

  18. I'm happy to see this hypocrite gone, but is it really time to celebrate? This entire episode reeks of homophobia - from Craig's pathetic life and voting record, to the police tactics (arresting someone for hand signals!), to the GOP calls for resignation (but not for the heterosexually guilty Vitter). Even the adorably unfunny homophobic New York Post survey.

I'm glad that karma has bitten back at Craig, but none of this is particularly good news for gay people in general. Certainly no reason to celebrate, except for the schadenfreude.

    Posted by: Gregg | Sep 1, 2007 7:30:52 PM

  19. gregg,

    please stop slinging your schadenfreude.

every time a hypocrite is exposed, the world-soul breathes a sigh, and an angel gets his wings. everyone wins.

all this waste-of-humanity had to say was, "i love cock (i'm gay)." but he didn't. therein lies the tragedy.

and may the gods have mercy on his black soul.

  21. Love the way he keeps using his marriage as a shield, like that means anything these days. And lord only knows what scene she's into, I refuse to believe these women are married to these old queens for as long as they have and don't have any clue. He strikes as me as the type who likes to get up in garters and such.

    Posted by: Matty | Sep 1, 2007 10:56:51 PM

  22. Many people here have contrasted Craig with Vitter, but this is not a fair comparison. Craig was charged with a criminal act and convicted for it. Vitter has not been charged with a crime and not convicted. There is a legal distinction.

Of course, there are other considerations. The reason that the Republican hierarchy moved against Craig so swiftly is that
the Governor of Idaho is a Republican, so will name a Republican to fill the seat. While the Governor in Vitter's state is a Democrat and would name a Democratic replacement, thus putting the Republicans in an even worse position in the Senate. It's all politics, guys.

By the way, please don't infer that I approve of the hypocrisy of Vitter. A spokesman for "family values" uses the services of a prostitute and gets exposed. Great! But this is a case where the voters, rather than the Senate hierarchy, will render a verdict.

    Posted by: gr8guyca | Sep 1, 2007 11:01:13 PM

  23. And by the way "Vi," if it had been a man soliciting an undercover female cop, he would've been arrested just as well, so I'm not buying the "will you be next" routine.

It's pretty clear what his intentions were and if you're a closeted, homophobic queen, you better chose your cruising spots very carefully because Karma is one hell of a bitch.

  25. Vitter has not been charged with a crime and not convicted. There is a legal distinction."

But he admitted to the crime. Convicted or not, it's undisputed fact that he did it.

"The reason that the Republican hierarchy moved against Craig so swiftly is that
the Governor of Idaho is a Republican, so will name a Republican to fill the seat. While the Governor in Vitter's state is a Democrat and would name a Democratic replacement, thus putting the Republicans in an even worse position in the Senate. It's all politics, guys."

Right, they're all about standing up for "family values" except when it could cost them in some way, then "family values" is thrown out the window. That's the criticism here, they're are hypocrites. Retaining an admitted fornicator is not consistent with "family values", or their treatment of Craig.

  26. I am no fan of this hypocrite and I think he doth protest too much about "not being gay", but this whole incident still reeks of entrapment. While we all agree this horse's shank needed to be brought low, touching one's foot against someone else's foot in the adjacent toilet stall is NOT a sexual come-on. Unless I missed something (like Sen. Craig reached under the stall and grabbed the undercover cop's penis, or stood next to the cop at a urinal and exposed his penis in lewd manner), I really don't think Sen. Craig was guilty of anything, except hypocrisy and a very hateful attitude. Combine this with the Ft. Lauderdale mayor's claim that there is an epidemic of sex activity by gay men in public restrooms and you have got the makings of a witch hunt against gay men. It could have been any of us in that restroom and a wrong look or innocent gesture could have gotten you busted. I am glad Sen. Craig is gone, but I doubt the cop's story. Cop's lie and they lie ALL the time. Remember that and be careful. People still hate us and will do anything it seems to drag us down.

  30. Craig says he's not gay and I agree. Most gay people I know at 39 don't live in the shadows and perp around behind their family's back. To me, he's a straight married man that cheats in dishonest or even pathetic ways. It doesn’t matter that it’s with a man that he cheats.

Why can't America distinguish between well adjusted gay people who've made a positive transition and those that choose a lifetime of reprehensible lies?

That he passed rabidly anti-gay legislation and sat in on Bill Clinton's sex scandal makes me think Craig got about what he deserved. It's his hypocrisy that's truly scandalous not this rather light single incident of lewd behavior.

If not caught red handed, Craig would have bitterly denied this side of him until his dying days all while defiling good and honest gay people with his last acrid breath.

  32. The silver lining in this mess is that he is out of office and people who talk hate are going to be looked at in a different light. I have spent the better time of my week explaining the 'art' of closeted men who live in the shadows and troll for sex. It also will have an affect on the GOP in 2008.

Posted by: patrick nyc | Sep 2, 2007 10:00:35 AM

  33. Philip in Hartford- What the hell are you talking about? Sen. Craig is a big, flamin' homo. Straight men don't solicit men for sex, and their marriage status is completely irrelevant. The second a "straight" guy solicits another man for sex, he's NOT STRAIGHT. Your internalized homophobia is readily apparent. That is, if you're gay. If you're not, well, maybe you actually are.

  35. Hate on the hypocrite Craig all you want. I don't care. I hope the worst for any anti-gay Republican. Its not what I'm saying. I'm saying that what he did, if any of you bothered to listen to the tape or read the police report, does not sound like a criminal offense. I pray that you do not hope that its a great thing too that cops are picking citizens off in bathrooms cause shoes touch and hands reach down to the floor. Physical touch or verbal exchange for sexual favors should be the very least in cause for arrest in these types of entrapments.

Posted by: Vi Agara | Sep 2, 2007 12:41:11 PM

  36. Vi--
It wasn't entrapment. Craig tapped first, Craig looked through the door slit multiple times, he ran his fingers under the wall. The officer only made eye contact while sitting in the stall, and tapped in response to Craig's initiating taps. No entrapment.

It's very true that the man was arrested for odd gestures and had he fought the charges he'd have been completely cleared. Any man would have who'd fought those charges.

BUT: Per the audiotape, Craig admitted two important things:
    1. he knew men have sex in restrooms ("it was entrapment"), and
    2. he knew how it was done ("you solicited me")
No one who didn't know the tapping, eye contact, and finger gestures would say he had been solicited.

Listening to the audiotape I came away with a profound feeling of sorrow for Craig. If he had not been antigay in his other life and abused his position of authority, I'd say it was simply a sad moment in an old man's life. But because of the totality of the circumstances, it's pathetic, sad, and alas, fitting.

I personally believe he doesn't even realize what he does (the cruising). It's some sort of automatic behavior that he's done for so long but that he's compartmentalized so he doesn't have to acknowledge it. When he said "I'm not gay," in his mind it's the truth.

    Posted by: tjc | Sep 2, 2007 1:02:05 PM

  37. I feel no sorrow of any kind for Craig. His voice drips with contempt for the police officer who, being a mere "wage slave" is "beneath him."

Why is any gay person extending so much as ONE kind word for this vermin?

He'd slit your throat and order lunch.

Posted by: David Ehrenstein | Sep 2, 2007 1:15:52 PM

  38. His voice drips with contempt for the police officer who, being a mere "wage slave" is "beneath him."

That "wage slave" makes his living using his handsome face and well-toned body to ensnare men who have the wrong "sexual preference" as he puts it. And if they don't confess on tape, he hints that he could go to the press with the story. None of this is creepy to you?

In 2007, someone who makes a living exploited gay men (closeted cretins though they may be) but hasn't bothered to educate themselves as to the difference between "sexual orientation" and "sexual preference" is beneath me, actually.

But don't infer that I feel sorry for Craig, he had it coming, but that tape did creep me out and anger me a bit.

    Posted by: Johnny | Sep 2, 2007 6:13:00 PM

  39. I don't see the cop as exploiting gay men at all. I think the cop did fine overall. Had Craig not mentioned his job as an attempt to curry favor, he wouldn't have had the cop say he won't go to the media or that people vote for Craig. That response was solely because of Craig's actions.

I still think that Craig comes across pathetic and sad on the tape, but the cop didn't do wrong. Any lawyer who can spell "bar exam" could get the charges thrown out, and Craig behaved like all those perps on TV who confess to the cops with no lawyer present in some vain attempt to get the charges withdrawn as "it's all a misunderstanding."

Hence, sad and pathetic. Still a douche and an asshole, and worthy of our contempt, but that doesn't mean he's not sad.

    Posted by: tjc | Sep 2, 2007 9:20:30 PM

  40. Nothing sad at all. Just stupid and self-destructive.

If a halfway decent lawyer could have had the charges dropped (as everyone claims), WHY DIDN'T HE CALL HIS LAWYER???!!!!!

    (crickets chirping)

Posted by: David Ehrenstein | Sep 2, 2007 11:03:15 PM

  41. Why can't "stupid and self-destructive" also be sad?

I think your point about "why didn't he call his lawyer" is a good one and I don't have an answer for it.

I still think it's possible to feel pity and sorrow for ones enemies (and make no mistake, Craig is / was - is, I think -- an enemy). I do think he's sad. The tape confirmed it for me.

  44. I assume this has already been expressed in one of the Craig threads, but I don't see it here so I'll add it:

Especially offensive in the whole affair were the continued protestations of "I am not gay," instead of "I was not soliciting sex in a public restroom." The clear implication here is that the status of homosexuality is more shameful than the despicable crime. Craig's self-loathing homophobia, and the hypocrisy expressed in his voting record, remain vigorous. The man hasn't evolved one bit.

  45. most of you are missing the point cause you can't get beyond your hatred for Craig. You hate closeted self righteous hypocrites so much, you don't see the erosion of civil liberties taking place with this type of police enforcement.

Posted by: vi agara | Sep 3, 2007 8:40:14 AM

  46. Vi Agara, we never had any civil liberties for this kind of behavior, so there is no erosion illustrated in this case. Now Congress HAS taken away more of our civil liberties in recent years, no argument there.

"Hmmm, a job. That is what I need. A real hummer for sure!"

  50. As for Craig not consulting with a lawyer,
he returned to the Police three days after the arrest to inquire about the status of his case. At that time, he asked for a name that his lawyer could contact. So, it's unclear whether or not he did consult with an attorney. He may have. And also remember that he didn't enter a plea until a full two months after the arrest. He had plenty of time to think about what he was signing.
He was not rushed or coerced into signing anything. For the full details, go to Smoking Gun and read the Police reports
    and the actual plea agreement.

So, the next time someone says he got busted for being GAY, think again. I don't give a shit how many times people try to make the connection between soliciting for sex in a public restroom. It's not a GAY BEHAVIOR. It's a disassociative behavior perpetrated by weak-minded individuals that get some kind of kick out of public sex. WHATEVER! Sure, maybe in 19fucking50.
