Dooney Da Priest Says Saggy Pants Song isn't an Attack on Gays

Rapper Dooney da Priest said that lyrics in a PSA campaign by the City of Dallas weren't meant to offend gay people. The campaign, an attempt to curb the trend of saggy hip-hop pants, was criticized as homophobic for suggesting that wearing your pants low is a bad thing because it suggests that you are gay.

SaggyNPR reports: "After listeners pointed out the inherent homophobia taunting men for looking like they live 'on the down low,' Da' Priest says he apologized to the gay community on his MySpace page. Da' Priest says that the song isn't an attack on gay people, and that he was 'dealing with the N-word, too.'...'Whether their sexual preference is to be a homosexual or being gay, that's their problem,' Da' Priest says. 'I'm the street, I'm the street priest, and I have real good Christian values on what I believe in, and I am against homosexuality. But this is not the reason why I wrote the song.'"

I wish white gays could have an inkling of what it's like to be gay and black and have to face grotesque morons like this and medacious monsters like Donnie McClurkin day in and day out.

lordy, i am SICK of hearing how hating gay people is a "christian value".
so it's not cool to show your behind to other dudes .. but it would be okay if you are showing it to da ladies then ?? huh ??

Posted by: el polacko | Oct 30, 2007 4:06:51 PM

Yeah, I always feel grateful that there are no grotesque white morons out there with ignorant ideas about gay people.

Posted by: Lucy | Oct 30, 2007 4:07:18 PM

So, he's trying to say he's NOT insulting gays, by... umm... insulting gays?

'Whether their sexual preference is to be a homosexual or being gay, that's their problem. I'm the street priest, and I have real good Christian values on what I believe in, and I am against homosexuality. But this is not the reason why I wrote the song.'"

When this is the level of intelligence we're dealing with here, why even waste the energy to be offended?

Praise Jesus.

We need more ignant fools like this guy to spread the Good News!

*pukes*

What kind of fucked-up "apology" is that?

The real tragedy here is the amount of money and resources that are being wasted in trying to tell young people how to dress.

Hey adults - it's called REBELLION. Ever heard of it? Young people are not going to listen to some lame rap commercial telling them how to dress!

Posted by: Gregg | Oct 30, 2007 4:18:45 PM

Yet another person who's afraid to own their homophobia. Society is starting to stigmatize homophobia, so now we're seeing all these tortured rationalizations, talking about "I don't like homosexuality, but it's definitely not homophobia... "

Whatever. These are the same types of people as the morons who say they're not racist because they have a black friend or because they like Whitney Houston. How do you start to heal your own bias when you can't even recognize and own it? Yuck.

This is getting to be sooooo repetitive.

Posted by: Brian | Oct 30, 2007 4:20:50 PM

Exactly how is a person meant to take it, then?!? He is literally saying that if you walk around with your pants riding down, you must be trying to show your ass to other guys, which makes you queer, and that is bad. Jesus! What a moron. I'm sick of stupid people having so much air time. People can say whatever they want apparently and then just deny intentions if called into question.

Posted by: Michael W. | Oct 30, 2007 4:21:47 PM

Not him again. I'm just worried about his young following. Like someone said on a different blog, teach young people self respect and they'll pull up their own pants!

Posted by: Shabaka | Oct 30, 2007 4:26:10 PM

He says hatred of homosexuality is "not the reason why I wrote the song."

No. He wrote it because of saggy pants. The homophobia he just threw in as an extra. What a guy.

This contrived campaign is an attempt to shame these street thugs into pulling up their pants, otherwise they are supposed to believe that they are one more fag out cruising the street? I looked at this two days ago when Andy first posted it and again today. I question its logic, relevance and what impact, if any, it will have on the problem. And yes guys, it is a problem. These punks are exposing themselves in major tourist areas like the Las Vegas strip on a daily basis. To date, there is a not a city ordinance allowing the police to cite or arrest them. Recently there have been several shootings on the strip and the perps were dressed similar to this, only their pants are belted tightly below their ass. They have to shuffle when they walk. So now tourists and locals see them and anticipate trouble.

I am completely immune to name calling and "labeling" by third parties. Frankly, I don't give a damn what anyone says. But, I also realize that most people are not. As for these pants sagging thugs, I don't think any media campaign is going to phase them in the least. I would look for them to graffiti over any billboards or signs. Enforcing new local laws is the only way to deal with this.

I have real good Christian values too and the bible says blacks should be slaves. Get in the field and start picking cotton.

"I'm a street priest....I'm against homosexuality." GIVE ME A FUCKIN'BREAK. This asshole is most likely surrounded by gays, who have picked out his "style", created his "image", barginned with his record company, arranged his schedule, worked his sound system & lights, etc...Saggy pants came out of "prison" culture because no belts could be worn. Young thugs thought it made them look "tough" and gave them street creed. It has nothing to do with "gays" or guys on the "Down Low". Why not just say, "You're not in prison. Be grateful...Now go buy a belt and pull up your pants" I too am sick of the hip-hop community suddenly deciding they're "good christians" whenever the idea of homosexuality is brooched. You're in "show biz" baby...DEAL WITH IT!!

Posted by: JOAllOver | Oct 30, 2007 10:59:55 PM

This kind of non-apology apology is a recipe for gay bashing. What a stupid "issue" ... can't handle gang violence, can't handle education, so instead, brilliant idea, let's legislate dress codes. Nevermind that it is unconstitutional, but then, that is what Bush's America is all about.

Posted by: So Left I'm Right | Oct 31, 2007 3:20:14 AM

he claims he s a good christian! Ain't that sweet! what a load of old shit ...

Posted by: taz389 | Oct 31, 2007 5:22:26 AM

It gets tiresome for one to read that yet another thug-bunny justifies his stupid bigotry by declaring himself to be a "christian" as if THAT will excuse his dumb ignorance. Dooney was a dick last week; Dooney is a dick this week and he'll be a dick until the end of time. These pious pricks are getting on that one last nerve I have left.
