Shell Wildlife Photography Winners Announced

Bearglare

I know we have some Planet Earth fans out there. The Natural History Museum in London just handed out its Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards and some of the winners are pretty amazing. This shot of a brown bear was shot by Sergey Gorshkov in Russia, who happened to be taking pictures of salmon and didn't notice the bear until he was right next to him.

This elephant shot was the overall winner. The entire gallery is here.

Incidentally, when I was in Montana last week I spotted a black bear near my family's property. Of course I desperately wanted a photo but by the time I had my camera ready, well, as you can see I wasn't as successful as Mr. Gorshkov.

  1. I think the irony that Shell sponsors a wildlife photo competition is pretty sweet. It makes my eyes roll just like the bear's - in a global warmy kinda way...

  6. The pictures are great, but that website is awful! It requires completing a maze just to view one photo. Have they never heard of a slideshow?

  7. Andy, I think you mistook a bigfoot for a black bear. It happens all the time.

  9. They have a special preview evening tonight - the gay public was the main target for the tickets; not sure why, but it means I'll be going for free after work when it'll be far less crowded than the usual scrum in the day time. The Natural History Museum gets *my* thumbs up!

  10. Well Andy, next time you see the bear just cover yourself with honey and he’ll come to you. Image the close-up shots of his teeth you’ll get. 

  11. he's lucky he wasn't mauled. bears are fast. the only time I was in an encounter with a bear, it was fourth of july weekend and we were returning to the city from the mountains -- a bear lumbered/raced across the pavement in front of us and disappeared across the field into the trees. Poor big little shaggy haired thing. I would not have wanted to be in its path without the protection of the car. But it was beautiful to watch it move.
