News: Poland, Magnum P.I., Arizona, Howard Dean, The Joker

road.jpg Arizona ballot measure to constitutionally ban same-sex marriages appears defeated: "The House gave preliminary approval Thursday by a 28-27 vote to put the question on the November ballot. But that OK came only after Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Phoenix, lined up enough votes to tack on a provision to grant certain rights to unmarried couples living together, whether gay or straight. That move effectively tied the two issues together as a single ballot question, meaning voters who want to make same-sex weddings unconstitutional would be voting for some constitutional rights for gay couples. A spokesman for House Speaker Jim Weiers, sponsor of HCR 2065, said that is unacceptable and that the Phoenix Republican will now kill his proposal."

road.jpg Poland passes EU Charter but gets around gay requirements: "This week Prime Minister Donald Tusk reached a deal with the opposition, inserting a clause in the rights bill guaranteeing Poland's sovereignty within the union. The cause is seen as a means where the government can opt out of EU LGBT rights protections. Kaczynski has said he will sign the revised bill."

road.jpg Redwood City, California man faces hate crime charges for attack on gay neighbors: "Herbert Santos-Coy, 30, remained behind bars Wednesday on one count of felony assault for hate crime purposes, two counts of felony commission of a hate crime and one misdemeanor count of resisting arrest. If convicted, he faces up to eight years in state prison. 'There’s nothing the victims did that would have provoked this. It’s an outrage,' Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. Santos-Coy and his wife lived next door to the couple on Buckeye Street. On Sunday, the victims were working on their car when Santos-Coy approached them and began hurling anti-gay epithets, Wagstaffe said. Santos-Coy then allegedly struck one man in the face repeatedly before picking up a wrought iron table and swinging it at the couple. Santos-Coy had been drinking but prosecutors do not believe he was drunk at the time of the incident, Wagstaffe said."

One_2road.jpg Massive archive of gay and lesbian historical items at New York Public Library gets digital gallery and will be organized under new donor committee: "It is a newly organized... committee called LGBT@NYPL; for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. Carey Maloney and Hermes Mallea, the cochairmen, are also partners in M (Group), a design company. The goal, Mr. Maloney said, is “to get everything cataloged and digitized and to get an endowment” for the care and maintenance of the collections. Mr. Maloney is to announce at a party at the library this evening that the committee has raised $1.5 million so far. Time Warner has pledged $300,000. The MAC AIDS Fund has pledged $150,000 to improve public access to materials dealing with HIV and AIDS. Estée Lauder Companies has pledged $30,000."

road.jpg Sir Ian McKellen speaks at Stonewall Equality Dinner in London: "The Lord of the Rings star spoke about the need to change society and not just the law, and lamented that many who are brave enough to be out on the gay scene still live closeted lives and careers. Sir Ian criticised religious intolerance and said he had wanted Mehdi Kazemi to be his date for the Equality dinner, but he is still in custody in Holland."

road.jpg Howard Dean tells crowd at University of Wisconsin Madison that he doesn't get gay Republicans: "'They can't become more diverse. Who in their right mind, if they were African-America or Hispanic or Asian-American, if they were gay or lesbian, would join the Republican Party?' Patrick Sammon, president of the Log Cabin Republicans, called Dean's statement "callous" and said that Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama should publicly state what they think of it."

  1. McConaughey should only get that role if he can grow in some chest hair. A lot of chest hair.

  2. What Dean said was 100% right.

Hell, the log cabinites 1 hope McCain, the supposed maverick, has publicly stated he will not do anything against the Repub platform of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

  3. Kyrsten Sinema rocks! She led the campaign to defeat Arizona's same-sex marriage ban in 2006, and now she's found a very savvy way to kill this new ballot before it even reaches voters (who probably would have passed this one).

  4. How can you vote for a Republican. We need to vote for a Democrat president this year that will get rid of the defense of marriage act and fight for marriage equality for all. Go Clinton or Obama!

  5. I agree with CRISPY...Kyrsten Sinema rocks!!!!

  6. That's not a very convincing nurse disguise! ;)

  7. Dean, of course, is correct. I have always been mystified at the apparent oxymoron of "gay republican." An oxymoron, however, is a figure of speech referring to a term that appears on the face of it to be contradictary, but makes sense anyway (i.e. bittersweet). I think that the phrase "gay republican" is simply a contradiction in terms that makes absolutely no sense at all, unless one looks at it from a psychological perspective (sado-masochism, maybe?) But why bother?

I would hope that an apology is not forthcoming from either Barack or Hillary. One need not look further than the post regarding Rep. Kyrsten Sinema to see how important it is for us to circle the wagons. If the Log Cabinites want to give aid and comfort to the enemy, so be it, but they should not hold their breaths waiting for sympathy or understanding.

I would love to make out with John Mayer. I can't see how anyone would want to trade spit with Perez, though.

As to Magnum P.U., McConaughey should only get the part if he wears those short shorts throughout.

  8. If McCain is not going to modify the platform to make it more 2008 instead of 1908. I am not going to do anything to help him get elected.

  9. I hear you Howard Dean, I don't get gay, black, Asian or Hispanic Republicans, makes no sense at all. Mind, you the democrats aren't too much better, which is why I'm a registered Independent!

And, just who says Tom Brady isn't sexy, they really do need an eye exam ASAP!

  10. SEBASTIAN...Tom Brady is rumored to be a big old Republican...still think he's sexy?

    Posted by: peterparker | Apr 4, 2008 3:29:05 PM

  11. If John Mayer is making out with guys why doesn't he choose cute ones?

    Posted by: Sean | Apr 4, 2008 3:38:18 PM

  12. Well, it looks like we dems can come together and unite despite whichever candidate we support.

    Definetly a good sign.

Maybe Dean should get out there more often to help unite us.

NIC, I agree on the short shorts + either grow some chest hair if he shaves or get some fake chest hair glued on. Magnum isn't Magnum without the signature short shorts and hairy chest.

  13. Wow, add the Boston Phoenix to the list of horribly written publications.
Number 60 on the unsexy man list, "PETE WENTZ: FALL OUT BORE."
Oh snap! They said BORE instead of BOY! Take that, Pete Wentz!

  14. I just lost my lunch with the mental image of Mayer making out with Perez (the slob) Hilton. YEWWWWWWWWW!

  15. Tom Brady Republican? Perish the thought!! I don't believe it, the usual Republicans all look like those Manning's not at all attractive on any level and totally clueless off the field. If, he is, that would be sad, since, he seems to be a smart guy who should be able to see right through the GOP, and, then I'll have to go back to my tennis players!

    Posted by: Sebastian | Apr 4, 2008 4:36:05 PM

  16. I'm so over the gay Tom Brady fascination. He is well tired.

Matthew McConaughey will be just fine, and this is coming from a guy that loves the hairy-chested blokes. In fact my man is one sexy hair bear!

I have, if you have not noticed, stayed out of any political posts since our pissing match last month. While I will, as I have said over and over, support who ever gets the Democratic nomination, I had reservations about both Obama and Hillary, but McShame is not an option.

You never responded to my questions to your posts of me being a liar and a hypocrite, so now I ask you, when did I lie? How can we come together when people like you say such evil things to people like me? I don't hate Obama, I dislike his supporters like you.

Not a surprise you like Magnum, a closeted Republican douche bag.

  18. whoa, whoa, whoa! PATRICK NYC,

how did i get involved in this? while i still read the comments, i have also been stearing clear of the commentary regarding hill v. obama.

    Posted by: nic | Apr 5, 2008 3:26:26 AM

  19. "steering" not "stearing."

    Posted by: nic | Apr 5, 2008 3:37:23 AM

  20. "Patrick Sammon, president of the Log Cabin Republicans, called Dean's statement 'callous'."

I think Patrick is mixing up the words "callous" and "true." Plain-spoken reality from my ex-gov. Yet the Log Cabin Republicans--a few of them Towleroad posters, it seems--remain forever deluded Charlie Browns thinking one day the Republican leaders are going to hold the football still just for them.

  21. have heard something about it. But why don't u have a try a some bisexual dating sites as ( , where you can find many open-minded bisexual singles, like-minded bi couples, also hot bi curious too.

  22. Betting that a football player votes Republican is always a safe bet.

I'd guess the ratio of conservatives in the NFL is even higher than the military. Professional football players almost always come from small towns, often in the South and Midwest. And if you haven't noticed by now, rural America isn't exactly pro-gay.

In San Francisco, there has been talk of the local GOP drafting famous 49ers - Steve Young, Brent Jones, and Joe Montana - to run for Congress in 2008. Obviously, they can't defeat Nancy Pelosi in the 8th District. But they could go after one of the more vulnerable suburban seats (Ellen Tauscher - 10th District, Jerry McNerney - 11th District)
