road.jpg Vigil held for Father Mychal Judge on eve of Pope's Ground Zero visit: "He had a heart as big as New York. There was room for everybody. We wish that our church had room for everybody, and that was one of our prayers tonight, that our church would be welcoming, especially those who feel excluded, especially gays and lesbians."

Kaufman and Moss Hart's 1930 Broadway comedy, Once in a Lifetime to star Christine Ebersole. The show, which is having a reading next month, is to be directed by Jerry Mitchell.

road.jpg Singapore restricts videogames with gay themes: "People Like Us considers this new rule unjustifiably strict. Children should not have to be kept ignorant about the presence of gay people in society anymore than they should be shielded from people of other faiths and ethnicities. The path to acceptance of gay people is through teaching children about diversity from a young age. It is pejorative to lump gay sexual orientation with crime and drug use as the MDA’s new guidelines do, as if gay orientation is some kind of social threat."

road.jpg Gay bookstore in Vancouver that challenged Canadian Customs is up for sale: "Only two years after the store opened in 1983, the owners took on a fight that bolstered and exhausted them, lasting until just last year and challenging Canada's censorship laws. After 23 years of fighting Canada Customs' seizures of books bound for the gay and lesbian bookshop, the partners have put Little Sister's up for sale. It's time to do something else, Deva says as he plans to get a choir booked for the store's 25th anniversary celebrations. 'It's probably time to pass on the torch hopefully to some younger, energetic people who are willing to work with our store,' he says. 'I'm not in a rush. We're going to take our time.' The fight against Customs put the store at the forefront of the battle against censorship in Canada. Among books seized were Jean Genet's Querelle, Quentin Crisp's The Naked Civil Servant, Joe Orton's Prick Up Your Ears, The Joy of Gay Sex and The Joy of Lesbian Sex."

road.jpg Artist Ross Bleckner penning a memoir: "'It's based on the journals he has kept for years,' says a pal. 'And he is writing it as if he is giving advice to his younger self.' The New York painter is expected to include recollections about famous friends including Calvin Klein, Diane von Furstenberg and former Mrs. Ron Perelman, Claudia Cohen."

road.jpg Flowers appear to be losing their scent and experts are worried: "The potentially hugely significant research – funded by the blue-chip US National Science Foundation – has found that gases mainly formed from the emissions of car exhausts prevent flowers from attracting bees and other insects in order to pollinate them. And the scientists who have conducted the study fear that insects' ability to repel enemies and attract mates may also be impeded."

  1. I'm sorry, even though Jesse looks hot in the pics, he's too much of a poser to be attractive

  2. I don't believe the Raymond Burr news is news. He's listed in many Hollywood sexpose books as being gay. In fact, he's said to have had a long term relationship with William Hopper. I guess he wasn't as clever as he thought he was.

  3. Moveon.org was originaly "CENSURE and MOVE ON" created to help with grass root support to help Bill Clinton through the Monica Lewinsky, lieing under oath, impeachment thing.

Their entire point was to Censure him and move on to important stuff as vs the repub circus of impeachment.

  4. I don't Jesse looks hot for that very reason. Someone clearly told him he needed to take a bunch of steroids and look and act like a douche to make sure he was seen as a virile dude. He was so much better looking before.

  5. I hate myself for it but Jesse is hot

  6. Secret? Raymond Burr was my friend's neighbor in Northern California for many years and was very open. I thought everybody knew about it.

  7. "Enrique Iglesias says people are pleasantly surprised when they pull down his pants."

Oh, so that's what happened to his enormous mole.

  8. The quote from Iglesias was “I said I had a small penis as a joke. And they took it literally when it is not the truth. So when people find out it’s not the case they are pleasantly surprised.”

Hmmmm.... He said "when people find out." Not "when women find out." Hmmmm.

  9. Why is Jesse Metcalf allowed to be famous again? I watched "Desperate Housewives" last night and he wasn't on it. Seriously, why? At least Brody Jenner has a famous parent.

  10. Sorry, Henry, you need to get out more. "Everybody" did NOT know about Burr's sexuality. Not only did he die deep in the "public" closet, but there was virtually nothing even hinting about it throughout a long career [he apparently made up stories of two marriages in addition to the one documented, and a deceased son that may never have existed], and almost nothing at the time of his death, though some obituaries [TV Guide, yes; NY Times, no] made reference to his "longtime companion," Robert Benevides, and, at least now, the Website of Raymond Burr Vineyards refers to Benevides as “his partner, colleague and companion of 35 years.” Benevides won a legal fight with Burr’s sister over the multimillion dollar estate, and, apparently, discussed his relationship with Burr in “Passport” magazine in 2005.

There are claims that someone sent a letter to the FBI in 1961 claiming that Burr was a “sex deviate.” There well may have been a whispery “Confidential” magazine expose come and go. But I guarantee you that no average fan of “Perry Mason” or “Ironside” ever imagined the beloved star was gay. And he kept it that way to his death at 75 nearly a quarter century after Stonewall.

Burr was well known for his many acts of charity [20 some foster children], but I could find no record of his having given any money to any gay group, and, with all due respect, I don’t think “donations from the closet” deserve respect. Hopefully, the book will reveal a man who didn’t keep his powerful checkbook in the closet, too.

  11. I'm not surprised by the research on plants and pollination. So much of what humanity is doing is destroying this planet, and yet we either a) live in denial or b) care more about our own selves than the world (and everyone and thing in it) to make a difference. Sad.

  12. i dunno leland. i heard plenty of raymond burr gay rumors back in the 80s.

  13. i'm not surprised to read about flowers losing their smell. my butthole used to smell like a rose but that has faded recently too.

  14. SHHH.... Elton John is gay too.

  15. Jesse Metcalf's attempts to keep himself relevant (rehab???) are so staged and awful.

He is the poster child for poseurs everywhere.

  16. OFF TOPIC:

Good News: "The Washington Blade" includes Towleroad among the four gay blogs you can vote for as your favorite.

Bad News: Sodomite Repug Andrew "Raw Muscle Glutes" Sullivan is included and worse, so far, winning.

I trust sensible people everywhere will want to correct this inanity at washingtonblade.com.

but leland dahling... if just one of those 20 kids turned out to be gay, wouldn't that count?

ah the great raymond burr, can you imagine anyone else playing perry mason? ... i used to love those shows as a youth and always see them again whenever they are on ... i wonder if i secretly fantasized being della street ... perhaps i did which might explain my 6 years stint as a legal secretary...

  18. Ohhhh, that pic of the little boy dressed like Liza Minnelli brought back memories. There's a shot me and my sibs at the beach taken 40 years ago where I am so clearly camping it up in my fetching new sunglasses that my brother has this 'what the fuck are you doing?" look on his face . Sadly it remains to this day when ever I even attempt to talk about gayness; it's like he conveniently blocks it out to the point of talking to me about some hot babe he saw the night before like I know/care what he's referring to. :(

I think both Jesse Metcalf and Andrew Sullivan are hot. Love to see them in a daddy-son scene, preferably with Metcalf on top.

  19. Leland

At least Sullivan has come around enough to support a dem. Maybe not your prefered dem, but he isn't supporting Mccain which is a + for Andrew Sullivan.

I am not saying that he is a liberal messiah, but he isn't as bad as he used to be when he was totaly repub

  20. God you're an unpleasant, judgmental bitch, Leland.

Raymond Burr came of age as a gay man in an era when prisons and mental institutions were the too frequent destinations of people discovered to be gay. Virtually no one was out as we understand it at mid-century and before, and for those who were already middle-aged or older at the time of Stonewall to acknowledge their sexuality public went against a lifetime of fear. These generations of gays were repressed in ways few of us today can honestly say we've experienced. Though I'm sure you have some VERY long-winded, self-glorifying story about coming out while walking barefoot uphill through 5 feet of snow, with the rainbow flag in one hand and the crushed windpipe of Anita Bryant in the other.

You talk about them like they committed a crime by protecting themselves, as they understood it. Prick.

Do I wish he could have found the strength to come out in his public life? Of course. But we're not talking about Roy Cohn here, so get off your high horse.

  21. Leland,

Ditto what Clay said. Plus the fact he was a gay man with 20 foster kids. I'm sure those kids would happily argue that gay parents can be good parents. I'm sure that's a gi-nourmous middle finger to the right wing who says teh queer can't be good parents and shouldn't be allowed to adopt/foster.

  22. Jesse Metcalfe's had a male boob job.

    Posted by: 207guy | Apr 21, 2008 9:57:17 PM

  23. LOL

    207guy

    I thought the same thing.

His pecs are way too big as vs the rest of his muscle groups. Someone with pecs like that should have larger shoulders, biceps, triceps etc. He has so totaly had pec implants

  24. Kudos to what Clay said. Leland's comments are toxic.

  25. Talk about ripping the velvet! A Ross Bleckner memoir could be a fun/interesting read if it transcends the name droppiness his life affords and instead were to explore which had the more lasting influence on the Mary Boone boys and new york in general -- the glamour and green of the 80's downtown art scene and all the Warholian fame it still continues to afford or the dark and terrible plague that stole the lives of a generation of young gay men and the innocence of all others yet curiously (and sadly) has never managed to produce a singularly iconic piece of of visual art beyond the quilt that can instantly be associated with Aids and all that it implies (Kieth Haring excluded ).

Perhaps that's too tall an order for any one artist but certainly not an entire group of people who attended funereals as much as they did night club openings - sometimes on the same day but always with dinner at Indochine or Raouls in between.

That Bleckner's life has been spent devoted to aids charities and gay causes is a fantastic thing but it must goad him a little that his works - even the most beautiful among them (and they are beautiful, ethereal and sometimes even moving )lacked the weight needed to transcend that beauty inorder to become what was truly required of it - a big messy permenanent stain that screamed AIDS WAS HERE!

Of course the fun part of the memoir will be the peeling back of the velvet from the "mafia" to reveal it's not so creamy inside - what its really like to be a rich famous gay man in a city that is layed out before you night after night, with the worlds most beautful men by your side - The MEN!

The hundreds of beautiful men that float in and out like brightly colored tissues - interchangeable and disposable - essentially living the american dream - big pimping gay ghetto style - someone should pitch this to bravo - or better yet write a book.
