White House Rewrites 'Mission Accomplished' Banner
Tomorrow is the five year anniversary of the day Bush stood on the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln in front of the banner that read "Mission Accomplished" and said, "Major combat operations in Iraq have ended." Since then, 3,920 U.S. soldiers have been killed and countless Iraqi civilians.
Here's this year's spin on that speech, according to a White House press conference today:
Dana Perino: "President Bush is well aware that the banner should have been much more specific, and said, 'Mission Accomplished For These Sailors Who Are On This Ship On Their Mission'. And we have certainly paid a price for not being more specific on that banner. And I recognize that the media is going to play this up again tomorrow, as they do every single year."
According to Think Progress, "This is only the latest tack the White House has taken to defend Bush’s 2003 remarks. Last year, Perino insisted that 'we did prevail,' while former press secretary Tony Snow laughably claimed that Bush 'said just the opposite' of 'mission accomplished.'"
Watch the press conference, AFTER THE JUMP...
Um...um...um. Dana Perino is about this close to a Kristen Wiig SNL character. What a joke, if it weren't such a crying shame.

And is there anything about this administration's attempt to rewrite history that's new? Haven't they been trying to do just that since they finally realized that "old Europe", the UN and tens of millions of people around the world who screamed at them NOT to invade Iraq were right and they were completely, totally and absolutely wrong? I mean, really -- you expect Republicans to actually take responsibility for their actions? In what universe?

Really, 5 years to come up with that shit ass lame excuse?
How many more days do we have left with A-hole President?

This adminstration has been the most disgusting in history. Everything they say is a lie, they do want they want and call their critics cowards and un-American. This adminstration is evil. No matter who the Dem nominee is, we HAVE to vote for them to wipe away the grime of the last 8 years.

This is yet another example of the "tell a lie enough times and people will believe it" philosophy this administration has practiced since day 1.

As soon as gas hits 4.00 a gallon he can hang that Mission Accomplished banner on the White House.

You guys fail to realize:
WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AT WAR WITH OCEANIA!

It's already well over $4.00 in some cities.

Wow. If they're going to be THAT specific from now they'd better get some bigger banners!

Oh, Helen Thomas, I love you.
I think we could have a good time writing insipid and lengthy banners.

Rey, it's so true! Dolphins are really terrorists you know. Nothing that smiles 24 hours a day can possibly be on the side of good. And don't get me started on tuna. Chicken of sea? More like Muslim of the sea.

Bush is the modern Hitler, no doubt about it.
I'm amazed that no one has dropped a nuke on Washington yet, but one can always have hope.

"I'm amazed that no one has dropped a nuke on Washington yet, but one can always have hope."
I sincerely hope you are not serious with that comment, esp. since most of DC are black people who voted against the man.

But if the Dems in congress would just let us drill in ANWAR, then everything would be hunky dory. Damn those obstructionists!

"Mission Accomplished" means he actually finished reading "My Pet Goat".

What are you talking about? OCEANIA HAS ALWAYS BEEN AT WAR WITH EASTASIA. EURASIA IS OUR ALLY.

That John Adams miniseries on HBO sent me to do a little research on presidents past. I found my way to the white-house website which list 'em all with a little bio to click. The pic on the main page is a face shot of chimpy. It is the most embarrassing thing to say he has been our president for the last 7 years. Especially when looking into the actions of past presidents. Shameful for anyone who voted for him.

May Helen Thomas live forever! We need her cuz none of the other lame duck mofos in the press corps will speak up like that! She rattled that bitch, who started stumbling and mumbling like her boss!

It's truly amazing the American people are as dumb as they are, to elect such incompetent dumbasses as this administration, but you've GOT to love Helen Thomas!
It seems we've truly got what we deserve. The days of the American empire are over. I'm just waiting for the movie "The Sum of All Fears" to come true.

I am confused, are you claiming that we did not defeat Iraq under Saddam and remove him from power? Or are you claiming that the Abraham Lincoln was not in fact on its way home after completing its mission? Or are you trying to make the asinine claim that there is no difference between being at war with a nation ruled by a dictator, and supporting and defending a free nation as they learn to secure the democratic government they chose?
And liberals like to call themselves "nuanced" tee hee.
I like this site. So much stupid under one roof!
