Barack Obama Draws Massive Crowd in Portland, Oregon

Obama

Two days before tomorrow's Oregon primary, Barack Obama drew 75,000 people to a rally that the New York Daily News called his "wow" moment.

Although Tuesday's primary could give Obama a majority of pledged delegates, the campaign reportedly won't be declaring a victory in the nomination that night.

The Clinton campaign was also in Oregon over the weekend, the NY Times reports: "Bill and Chelsea Clinton also were in Oregon on Sunday, campaigning on behalf of Hillary Rodham Clinton in Salem. 'Don’t you let anyone tell you she can’t win,' Mr. Clinton said. 'You can still make your voices heard.' ... 'In wrapping up the case for his wife, Bill Clinton did not criticize Obama, who is heavily favored to win in Oregon on Tuesday,. writes The Oregonian. 'Instead, he directed his sharpest comments at the news media, citing what he said were recent studies that concluded that the Democratic primary campaign had been the subject of ‘the most biased, one-sided media coverage in the history of American politics.’'"

Talk about your "Sermon on the Mount"...

Posted by: ichabod | May 19, 2008 10:00:34 AM

I have to agree with Bill Clinton on this

"citing what he said were recent studies that concluded that the Democratic primary campaign had been the subject of ‘the most biased, one-sided media coverage in the history of American politics."

100% correct on news bias against both dem candidates while letting MCsame off the hook on a thousand different things. Calling the liar a maverick while he embraces everything of the bush administration. Not mentioning how his campaign is staffed by over 100 lobyists. That 2 top campaign staffers had to resign just this week for lobyist ties to dictators and shifting money around under the table. That he has totaly sold out to the far religous right. That his wife has had to sell off buisness ties in SUDAN where there has been a genocide going on for quite a while

I agree Bill Clinton. I agree with you Sir though maybe not in the way he would wish. :-)

Republicans must be sh*ting in their pants!

You know, if this is your idea of blogging -- taking a news story that has appeared EVERYWHERE and a photo that has appeared EVERYWHERE and slapping it up on TOWELROAD, then I wonder why anyone would visit this site.

Posted by: kirby | May 19, 2008 10:23:14 AM

Kirby

Then by all means start your own blog

Posted by: Jimmyboyo | May 19, 2008 10:27:37 AM

"...I wonder why anyone would visit this site"

Because it's informative and fair....and most of all: THE QUEEN posts here, and also, the Late Great Dowager Empress of England, Ireland, Scotland and Angola!

Posted by: Derrick from Philly | May 19, 2008 10:34:53 AM

As opposed to Kirby's idea of blogging, which is likely spewing nonsense, vitriol, and personal opinion which nobody cares to hear.

Posted by: shut the fuck up | May 19, 2008 10:51:38 AM

Kirby Dear, just because YOU saw it everywhere doesn't everybody else did. I'm a prime example, I didn't know about this until five minutes ago because guess what.... I have a life and have better things to on weekends than watching CNN.

Have a lovely day.

PS - Thanks for what you do Andy!

Andy: The best advice I was ever given was, "A man is known as much by his enemies and critics as by his friends and supporters."

You are a "must-read" for so many of us because you cover the full breadth of what it is to be gay and what interests our community. You bring together diverse viewpoints on diverse subjects. In addition, you have introduced me to Zeke, RB, Derrick, Jimmyboyo, PeterParker, Leland Francis/Michael Bedwell, and so many others whose wisdom and good humor I cherish. We may rarely agree on little more than that we are ever grateful to you for your blog.

Namaste and muchicimas gracias.

Thanks, RUDY.

I learn a lot here...especially from foks like you. 'Course y'all got to watch out for my "intellectual dishonesty". Aint that right, ABRACADAVER?

You know, I think I like Leland Francis' writing much more than I do that Micheal Bedwell's.

i couldn't help but think... blogs come in all types and sizes.

one might simply filter and relay more LGBT-relevant news. e.g. towleroad

one might search far and wide to collect a specific type of news from all different sources to save the reader time. e.g. a porn blog.

another might just spout out opinions and share random thoughts, joys, news or pass along what may be of interest to the perceived or imagined readers of the blog. e.g. my blog

find the blog that's right for you.

Perhaps this is the study Bill Clinton was referring to:

Great crowd. Are any of them old enough to vote?

Posted by: dc8stretch | May 19, 2008 12:51:31 PM

Hillary was wrong. Looks like Obama's got the white vote all sewn up. I know more straight white guys who freely admit their mancrush for the pol. Sheesh!

Posted by: Tom | May 19, 2008 12:51:37 PM

How odd that a person WHO IS VISITING THIS SITE would say, "I wonder why anyone would visit this site".

Trolling, trolling, trolling; keep those trolls a'trolling RAW HIDE!

DERRICK, don't worry about ABRACADAVER's hatefulness, ignorance or his hard-on for you. You know we got your back bubba.

LOL

Derrick

Hey, have you heard the news yet?

Former KKK guy in his youth Senator Robert Byrd of WV has come out today and endorsed Obama.

WOW! The times are a-changing

:-)

DC8STRETCH, are you capable of saying a kind thing about Obama or his supporters without being snarky?

This is going to be our nominee so, unless you are cool with four to eight more years of Bush's failed policies, it's time to start the healing and reconciliation process for the good of the party. I know it's a bitter pill to swallow, accepting loss always is, but continuing on with these pot shots only helps one candidate and it isn't Senator Clinton.

The crowd is amazing and it has to be making McSame poop in his Depends.

My husband and I will be going to see Obama here in Tampa Wednesday morning. I have no doubt that they will have to turn people away.

I had the pleasure of hearing him speak when he addressed the General Synod of the UCC last year.

Posted by: Zeke | May 19, 2008 1:12:56 PM

Zeke

COOL! Take a camera.

I actualy thought DC8's snark was kind of funny. As a Hillary supporter he did toss us a bone with "great crowd". I have a feeling he will at least vote Obama in the general.

I have to give Kudos to Hillary over the past couple of days. She has focused on mcsame and even did a teleconference to bloggers and news people saying she expects ALL of her supporters to support Obama "IF" he wins the nomination (I'll give her the "if" as long as she attacks mcsame). She stated that in the end the fight is dems against repubs and everything bush and not between herself / her supporters and Obama and his supporters. I have to give Hillary Kudos for that. Though geraldine Ferraro disapoints with her recent comment. As if a fighter for abortion rights and equal pay for women over the decades would actualy not vote dem in 08 = sad

Posted by: Jimmyboyo | May 19, 2008 1:21:35 PM

WOW! Simply beautiful.

We need a LEADER (not a Messiah) like Obama who can lead the nation once again to greatness, peace and good fortune for everyone.

I truly believe we will all rally for Obama and ensure that McSame I mean McWorse loses.

Go Obama!

JIMMYBOYO, will do!

:)

Obama can still lose if gets caught in too many Kerry-like vacillations, such as his escapades pandering to bigots and to us, and by the unknown factor of racism. The Clintons first introduced racism into the campaign against Obama but it's fast becoming a big part of Republican strategy. They’re so heartily disliked that they really have no choice, and they’re much better at than Hillary and Bill. It’ll be Willie Horton redux. We‘ll know by November 5th how the Bradley effect will play out but for now ALL the signs point to a repeat of LBJ’s 1964 landslide defeat of the Republicans.

Like Wilson, FDR, Truman, LBJ and Clinton, Obama is promising peace but will lead us into war. Like Goldwater, Nixon, Reagan and the Bushes, McCain is beating the war drum and will lead us into war.

Obama’s 'peace' pledge is based on the lie used by LBJ and the Democrats when they invaded and occupied Vietnam. It's a propaganda ploy called 'phased withdrawal’. That’s Vietnam era code for ‘we’ll leave when we damn well feel like it and we won’t leave without oil hegemony.” LBJ and the Democrats were defeated on the ground in Nam. The next administration will be forced out of Iraq. In both cases the cause was/is obstinate insurgents and the efforts of civilian and GI antiwar activism.

Disillusionment with Obama (or McCain) will be compounded by their continued assaults on our standard of living, union busting, the lack of socialized medicine and sham efforts (like Barney Franks fake version of ENDA) against bigotry.

The bigger they are the harder they fall. Obama idolatry will rather quickly turn into anger. And that will be the signal for the GLBT movement and our allies in the antiwar and other movements to begin cleaning up the mess created by those naive enough to vote for Democrats.

that picture as with most of what obama stands for reminds me of a fascist state in the making.

we are the ones we have been waiting for.

Tofer

or more like a JFK rally from the bygone days

Fascism is government run by buisness for buisness per Musolini a true fascist.

@Kirby - Why go "everywhere" when you can just come here?! :)

Posted by: Aman Chaudhary | May 20, 2008 4:08:43 AM

FASCISM UNDER BUSH is what we are trying to get rid of. Here are the signs:
http://www.oldamericancentury.org/14pts.htm

1.) Powerful and Continuing Nationalism: Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
2.) Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights: Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
3.) Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause: The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
4.) Supremacy of the Military: Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
5.) Rampant Sexism: The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.
6.) Controlled Mass Media: Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
7.) Obsession with National Security: Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses
8.) Religion and Government are Intertwined: Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.
9.) Corporate Power is Protected: The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
10.) Labor Power is Suppressed: Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
11.) Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts: Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.
12.) Obsession with Crime and Punishment: Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations
13.) Rampant Cronyism and Corruption: Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
14. Fraudulent Elections: Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.
