David Beckham to Launch His Own Brand of Bottled Water?
David Beckham may alter his deal with Pepsi to launch his own brand of bottled water, according to a source at UK tabloid The Mirror: "David Beckham has had a fantastic relationship with Pepsi - it's one of the longest running contracts in its history. But after 10 years he feels there are other things he could do. He is a global brand in himself and there is more scope for him to promote his own products. He has an idea for creating a range of healthy products, including water. That's something PepsiCo might develop with him. David is keen to go down the healthy route to keep in with his sporty image. And Pepsi is desperate to keep him. So who knows..."

buying bottled water is just wrong, wrong, wrong.
btw, the locution, "He has an idea for creating a range of healthy products...", is wrong. this is one of my pet peeves. the word should be "healthful," not "healthy." shouldn't the english know better?
i know the late george carlin said, "don't sweat the petty stuff, and don't pet the sweaty stuff," but correctness in word usage is not petty: he would have concurred. we should all try to preserve the distinctions in our language.
and to DERRICK, just when i think you can't surprise me.... lol.

According to Merriam-Webster the definition of "healthful" is "healthy", so really they are interchangeable. And with that I have way too much free time on my hands (currently waiting for the cable guy to come).

Yes, RP is right. Products can be "healthy" if they benefit your health (which bottled water is unlikely to do, but that's the intent).

Actually, I believe, healthful refers to food and products, as such, as is spinach is healthful, and healthy refers to activities such as running and not voting Republican is healthy. :-)

i'm a language purist. i do not accept healthful as a synonym for healthy anymore than i accept that decimate = destroy, transpire = happen, or enormity = enormousness. we have to draw the line somewhere, otherwise we will be overtaken by ad-speak (where lite = light and thru = through), watergate language (witness andy's jocular, but tiresome use of "gayonnaise-gate"), and other forms of gobbledygook. i will not surrender to imprecise language usage simply because lexicographers cave in to pressure from the masses, unwashed or not.
i know that the healthy vs healthful battle is lost, but i am almost giddy that this discussion is taking place. god(s) love this blog.

Nic, I've been a professional writer and editor for 16 years and only understand some of your points.
No, decimate is a huge mistake---it means taking out 1 in 10. So, there agreed.
Transpire does mean occur (or happen), at least in its final definition on mw-com.
Anyone who would confuse enormity with enormousnous is an enormous jackass.
But, regardless of these examples, language does change. I will never be happy seeing "impact" used as a verb, but so goes it...Still, don't worry---we're on the same page. I cringe and weep when I see public officials use "impactful."

yes, language does change, but not always for the better. the shift in meaning from "transpire" to "perspire" to "happen" is a perfect example of slovenly, fake elegant-ism. as sheridan baker said, "i think the word [transpire] is now useless, both pretentious and inaccurate in it's newer sense of 'happens'".
i am all for language changing when it serves to enhance communication, but what purpose does trading "happen" with "transpire" serve, other than to make a talking head feel all smart and shit?
i am happy that we are on the same page. many americans are not even in the same chapter with us. look no further than our own moron-in-chief.
