Michelangelo Signorile on Certain 'Insane' Clinton Supporters

Signorile

Yesterday, on his Sirius show, Michelangelo Signorile tackled the issue of irrational Clinton supporters who refuse to vote for Obama no matter what.

Signorile writes: "I got tough on Wednesday with many angry Clinton supporters -- understandably demoralized -- who called in to say that there was no way they could vote for Obama and would now be voting for McCain. This, even though they would rather a Democrat, and in some cases they are gay and understand that John McCain courts antigay bigots. That, to me, crosses the line and is completely unacceptable and is, frankly, insane. Is it about race? In many cases, I'm sure. In other cases, perhaps not, but whatever it is, it's time we hash it out and get to the bottom of it and make sure people understand the stakes here."

Let's hope Clinton gets out there soon and helps bring this party together. Looks as though that may happen on Saturday now.

  1. I support Mrs. Clinton and understand how these people feel. I won't vote for McCain and I most certainly won't vote for Obama. I'll either revisit Nader or not vote at all. Obama has not earned my trust nor my vote and I don't see that changing.

  2. And Clinton HAS earned your trust? Unless you're personal friends or something, I think you might hand out your trust too easily.

  3. I have many gay acquaintances that wont vote for Obama simply because he is black or half-black. I find it disgusting to say the least. Something that is particularly galling is that many of these white educated gay men had objectified and chased after black men for years for sex. So I guess its all right to have a black man fuck you but you wouldn’t want to vote for one. It’s the return of the Mandingo syndrome.

  4. People run to extremes of adoration or loathing when they are too weak live with the gray irony of this world. Let them nullify themselves, while the rest of us make the choices they will have to live with.

    Posted by: Yeek | Jun 5, 2008 10:03:17 AM

  5. I think that people are just very emotional and invested in their candidate of choice. It's June now. November is a ways away and people will most likely realize what is at stake this election once they see Obama and McCain duke it out in the debates.

I had the weird position of really liking both candidates (but I voted Obama in the NY Primary), so this divisiveness is just strange to me.

  6. The idea that people "don't know him" is being planted, ever so subliminally, by the corporate media. If you pay attention to the way they frame their discussions this meme gets dropped in a lot. So now you have people who aren't so media savy, which is most of us, going around repeating this. They don't even realize that they've had this spoon fed to them.

I ask you. How in the world can a gay person not give Obama the benefit of the doubt? My god, this is a multi racial (black) man who has grown up in Kansas, as well as around the world. He is the closest thing your going to get to having a president that knows what it is like to be treated like a second class citizen, from both sides. Are you people who are going to vote for McCain really that stupid?

  7. Clinton has always struck me as a pandering carpetbagger. The more she talks, the more I don't trust her or want her in power. My thoughts are behind Obama.

It's interesting to see how race is going to play, now. Honestly, I hope it brings to light if bigotry is still as strong now as it was in the 1950's. If it is; if race IS the key problem with Barack, then America, and more importantly, Democrats, you people need to get over yourselves.

  8. *Repost*

Do not despair those Clinton supporters who claim they will not vote for Obama. He was never going to get the votes of the bigots. Obama can, and I believe will, earn the votes of the younger generation who do not suffer the prejudices of their elders. The key is to turn out the voters.

  9. signorile is right, it is insane not to vote for obama because hillary lost. no only insane but just plain stupid. i voted for hillary and intend to vote for obama. they both stand for the same principles and their platform is the same. americans seem unable to get beyond the cult of personality and get to the root of the matter. the important question is do you really want another republican president who will bring you another 4 years of bush policies? if mccain wins you people will have only yourselves to blame. boy, will you all be sorry then. very sorry, indeed.

  10. So this caller's litmus test for candidates is that they "know how to play the game"?! No wonder he'll vote for McCain, then. And if anybody knows how to "play the game," it's the Clintons. Look, if Hillary had won the nomination, I'd have jumped to her camp in a heartbeat. I'm a liberal and a Democrat, and I know who will stand up for me and who won't. John McCain hasn't, and he won't. The gay community is part of his game, and he'll play us like a fiddle.

I'm really hoping that time will ease these tensions, and the anger and fear that that are bubbling to the surface. I guess it's going to be a long summer...

  11. Ah! It's great to see gay men embracing their inner bigoted and self-destructive tendencies.

Can't you all look forward to the day that John McCain appoints a clone of Scalia and Thomas, the justices who voted to keep the anti-sodomy laws?

Rejoice in the thought of McCain vetoing ENDA.

Salivate about the lack of universal health care and the continuation of Americans either dying because they can't afford insurance or declaring bankruptcy over medical bills.

Embrace the beauty of Constitutionally based second-class citizenship!

Smile with the heartwarming knowledge that Roe v. Wade will be overturned and your sisters, nieces, and girlfriends may get to experience the wonders and mysteries of back room, unsanitary abortions that lead to sterility or death!

Inhale deeply and enjoy the smell the sweet floral smell of the rotting corpse that was the middle class that died because they were crushed under taxes and could find no work because their jobs disappeared.

Celebrate the death of American science because McCain continued the Bush policies that disavow science because the evangelicals and big business don't want to hear anything that counters their beliefs!

So, remember to vote McCain in November!

It might be insane for LGBT voters. But not for your average American.

  13. There is absolutely NO rational reason for a Clinton supporter (and I am one) to vote for McCain over Obama. It's the issues, stupid. On the issues--remember those?--Obama and Clinton are on the same page, Clinton and McCain are not. So, since this is not about policy substance, expect some creative rationalizations for not supporting the candidate your candidate--Clinton--will be supporting. Maybe you don't have to be selfish, emotionally immature, and racist not to vote for Obama if you're a gay Democrat, but it helps. As for the trolls: pathetic creatures.

  14. It's insane to vote for McCain instead of Obama if you're a democrat. But then again, American voters have always been a bit insane. A lot eople didn't want to vote for Al Gore because they thought he was too "unhumourous". O... K... do you want a funny president or one who doesn't start unnecessary wars that cost billions of taxpayer dollars based on lies?

This year, when surveys were made. A majority of black voters said "I'm voting for Obama". And I often "Because he's black". Um... yeah. Let's ignore the fact that the president of the United States is immensely powerful and needs experience and qualifications. I mean, he's BLACK! And YOU'RE black. Hence, you MUST vote for him!

In many respects, this race has been a lot about a Woman vs. an African-American. A lot of people didn't even care about their messages, qualifications, political history and whatnot. Elated at the idea of a black president, black voters came out in droves to vote blindly for Obama. Women did the same, I'm sure, but I don't think to the same levels as Obama supporters.

I also often read about how Obama is very charismatic and has many people believe in his speeches about hope and change and blah blah. Say what? You don't care if he's even capable of doing what he's preaching about as long as it sounds good?

And then we have John McCain who's not all there if you watch his public appearances. He acts Alzheimersy.

  15. Yes, every person who voted for Clinton that will not vote for Obama is a racist.

Every person who didn't vote in the Democratic race but will not vote for Obama is also a racist.

The ten percent of black democratic voters who didn’t vote for Obama in the Democratic races are race-traitors.

There can't possibly be substantive reasons for voting McCain instead of Obama. If you do, you are a racist. If you are gay, you are a racist AND a traitor to the GLBT community. You cannot possibly vote on any other issues than GLBT issues.

Wow, very good, open-minded analysis. Congrats, you people are the Bill O'Reillys of the left-wing.

  16. Thank you, Signore Signorile:

I think we all knew that there were going to be a certain number of Democrats who would never vote for Barack Obama. What Signorile is saying is atleast examine your reasons why. If it were Edwards, Dodd, Biden or Kucinich--would you have this "...never vote for him" attitude?

I believe Senator Clinton can persuade most of her supporters to do the right thing for the Democratic Party come November, but some never will--and we know why.

LANDIS, the "average American" gave us George W Bush. If they want 3,000 more of their sons and daughters do die in Iraq, if they want two or three more 9/11's, if they want the continuation of a sick society which rewards rich people for their greed and lack of love for their country's welfare--then....so be it.

  19. PHILIP,

many of those black voters who voted for Obama "because he's black" would spit at a Condoleeza Rice candidacy. Being black can't get you black votes if what you believe is right-wing crap. I voted for Ed Rendell over Lynn Swann here in Pennsylvania. Swann 's not only black but a lot cuter than Rendell, but I still voted for the Jewish Democrat over the Black Republican.

Stop lyin' on black people. It's funny, almost all my postings on this primary race have been about defending black voters....never too enthusiastic about Obama...never harshly critical of Clinton....just responding to incendiary racial comments from Towleroad commentors. I want to talk about Joan Crawford again.

  20. Two reasons not to get over this: (1) the apportioning of delegate votes. Obama won more pledged delegates by winning contests with fewer voters. (Think: Idaho.) He was rewarded for actually not getting out the vote. (2) The intense, ceaseless vitriol and gender hatred created by mostly straight white dudes pissed off that a woman (whom they don't find attractive and doesn't remind them of their mother) was taking on a man's job.

For those two reasons, all democrats should consider the mess the party has created, as well as the outright sexism that has been played ruthlessly by both media pundits and Obama staffers. Would you want to support a party that used racism to advance a specific candidate? Well, I suppose if you were a Repbulican.

This is a dark day for the Democrats. I can't see a way out of the mess. The hole is too deep and those of us who have their eyes open cannot condone what has been done in our name.

  21. I was born and raised in the deep South and I live in Florida yet I have NEVER, not once, heard a gay person say they wouldn't vote for Obama because he is black. I find it odd, and frankly a bit suspect that people claim to know ALL these gay people who have TOLD THEM that they won't vote for Obama because of his race. Even if some gay people feel this way how many people REALLY know that many people who would outright say so? VERY suspicious indeed. I'm not buying it.

I know there are gay racists out there but I can't help but think this is yet another Rovian-styled right-wing swift-boat scams that trolls will drop into gay and liberal blog comment sections and gullible people will lap up and spread like wildfire. This really sounds like something that would be created in the echo chamber over at GayPatriot.

The ONLY gay Democrats that I've heard say they wouldn't vote for Obama are the radical Clinton supporters who have convinced themselves that Obama and his supporters are gay haters and woman haters or those who bought into and have repeated, ad nauseam, the claim that Obama can not possibly win in November and now they feel that it's their personal responsibility to do, or not do, all they can to fulfill the prophesy.

I feel certain that the vast majority of these people will come around once Senator Clinton comes aboard and once they settle down and start thinking more rationally about what's at stake in this election. There are people who will never come around. There will always be people who will cut off their noses to spite their faces. In my opinion, those are people who do more harm than good to the Democratic Party anyway.

  22. I've been hearing the most ardent Clinton supporters speak like this caller for the last few weeks. It is very emotional for some because they really have gotten their heart broken by this loss.

The five stages of grief are:

    1. Denial
    2. Anger
    ---->
    3. Bargaining
    4. Depression
    5. Acceptance

"I'm gonna vote for McCain" is between #2 and #3. Over the next two weeks the Depression will hit, and in a month Acceptance.

As a party let's give ourselves time to grieve the loss of an historic opportunity to have the first woman president. And a Clinton no less - a tough as nails candidate that understands how to deal with the Republicans.

After the process has time to play out many of the most ardent Clinton will get to know our nominee and decide not only is he good enough, but actually is someone they are happy to support.

  23. Andy, Why would you say "Let's hope Clinton gets out there soon and helps bring this party together"...when Obama is the candidate??? HE IS THE ONE that needs to bring things together - he is the one that is supposed to be the leader now - he is the one that won - and he is the one that should be asking directly to Clinton supporters for their help now - and appealing to that group. If he does not win the White House this fall and did not honestly make that attempt to apeal to Clinton supporters then it is his own fault - and not Clinton's.

  24. I can't help but think that this entire charade is caused by GOP plants in order to create a 'buzz' over Clinton's loss. It reeks of Rove.

  25. That dumb ass queen on the Daily Show last night was an embarrassment. Typical of the caller Michael had yesterday. You've all seen her standing behind Clinton screaming DENVER (he was also there in W. Virginia).
She is gay as the day is long (and brainwashed by Hillaryland in my opinion) and is going to vote for McCain.

Well he can get to the front of the line when they start rounding up the queers.
