Secret Meeting Held Between John McCain and Log Cabin Republicans

Log Cabin President Patrick Sammon confirmed to the Gay Patriot blog that John McCain held a meeting with the group in "the past couple of weeks" that didn't ever appear on the Senator's schedule.

MccainsecretSaid Sammon to Gay Patriot: "We’ve had a series of productive meetings with the campaign since Sen. McCain won the nomination—including a recent meeting with the Senator. We expect to have more conversations with the campaign as we head toward November."

Gay Patriot: "According to published news reports the Sammon-McCain meeting would be the first face-to-face dialogue between a Republican Presidential standardbearer and the President of the national Log Cabin Republicans organization since the check-refund controversy between LCR and the Dole Campaign in 1995."

One of the reasons it may be so hush-hush is that McCain doesn't want to upset the wingnut crowd, like Peter LaBarbera of Republicans for Family Values, who in April expressed dismay that Arnold Schwarzenegger spoke with the group at its convention, reportedly as "McCain's surrogate".

Pam has some of the right-wing responses to the reported McCain meeting.

  1. It's great that he's listening to gay groups and hopefully he'll follow the lead of Arnold Schwarzenegger and find a way to support gays. Just as democrats don't believe in the scare tactics of the republicans, the republicans aren't going to believe in the democrats same tactics. They're not going to work on either side this time. People want answers to real problems.

  2. John: did you watch the video? Do you know his positions? "Find a way to support gays?" Perhaps by taking their money and listening, then acting against them. Or perhaps you don't consider ENDA, DADT, and marriage to be "real problems."

  3. Right, JOHN, McCain is listening to gay groups and Republicans want answers to real problems. Thanks for the morning laugh.

  4. LCR's are TRAITORS...Im tired of being nice...they are SCUM,SELFISH,GREEDY....they are stupid to honestly think that the GOP would welcome them...yea,welcome thier donations..then say "Screw You".."No Rights for you"...."You're OUR scapegoats to get donations and votes". I have NO tolerance for LCR's, and IF I meet one...I basically tell'm what I've said here...and act as if they no longer exist...they UNDERMINE, every gay person who has struggled to obtain rights in this Hypocritcal nation!

  5. How nice for the LCR's that John McCain is pretending to give a shit about them. He even granted them a "Secret" meeting. They must be so proud.

  6. The LCR have done more damage to the cause by allowing cover for some of the people who would do away with us. Gramps has absolutely NO interest in our existence other than to get our votes. Which is worse? Gramps? or the shills who protect him? The LCR have always deluded themselves into thinking they are helping the situation. I have too much respect for Judas to compare them to him.

  8. This year I am more skeptical. Since Obama is 28 percent ahead in California, 1 less McCain vote will not be a problem. I am supporting Bob Baar as a protest.

I just do not want to be bamboozled this time. and it seems McCain is too embarrassed to be meeting with Log Cabin which is a bad impression for him too.

  9. I like the idea that LCR is going for with trying to get Republicans to fight for gay rights, but in practice it hasn't been successful because many of the LCR people refuse to come out.

I was in it for a moment and it was okay but honestly when you don't have a viable third option to support then it really doesn't matter.

It is like how most democrats who voted for Hillary will vote for Obama not because they want to but they feel they have to stop a Republican from winning.

I think I am screwed either way with Obama or McCain so I am looking at the other candidates. If I find nothing suitable I just will write in a vote for someone I think should have been there.

Who are LCR's traitors to? The belief that the government should not tax and spend? Or spend spend spend and then tax the hell out of everyone to make up for their inablilty to follow a budget? That the government should not be "takng care" of everyone? That the gov't responsibiliy is to uphold the Constitution?
And for all you who ignore those gays/lesbians who are members of the LCR should be ashamed of yourselves. We all each have a Constitutionally protected right to believe what we want to believe, and should not feel embarrased or threatened by bullies because that bully cant pull his/her head out of his/her ass to see that there is more than one color in the rainbow, which, is I thought the reason that the rainbow was chosen as a sign of gay rights, because it covers every color of the rainbow, not just black and white.
So, get over yourselves, live and let live.

  13. He's waaaaay behind in fundraising and needs the money. He is already against the FMA and supports DADT and DOMA, so what's really going to change here?

    Posted by: anon | Jun 26, 2008 1:07:40 PM

  14. Crash

Then why are you supporting the repubs?

1- america i in greater debt now under 8 years of bush and repub controlled congress than it ever has been before

2- lower taxes? LOL You aren't getting those lower taxes unless you are warren buffett or exxon and Warren says he doesn't want the tax breal and actualy wants to pay more in taxes to run a proper government

3- taking care ofeveryone? You better renounce your SS checks and medicare for when you retire since nobody ever pays in what they get back. You will get more back from SS and medicare than you ever payed in = socialsm.

    Stop the bs

  15. Thank you, JIMMYBOYO

I don't know how many Americans are going to fall for that "tax and spend Democrats" crap anymore because they've experienced the "spend and spend and spend, fiscally irresponsible Republicans."

That Iraq oil money never did happen for George the Idiot--no oil money to pay for his war. No amount of oil money can make up for the loss of lives--American and Iraqi.

Gay men who are on the fence should just think of the Supreme Court, and do what they need to do on Election Day. Gay men who vote for the party of Pat Roberts and Pat Buchanan need to confess why they really vote the way that they do: an aversion to chocolate.

Responsible tax rates and reducing budget deficits are not Republican accomplishments--haven't been for 50 years. Democrats balance budgests now.

  16. Derrick

    :-)

Exactly, I also wonder why crash is even here posting on this site instead of serving over in Iraq supporting the foreign policy of his prefered party

    Posted by: Jimmyboyo | Jun 26, 2008 2:07:08 PM

  17. Democrats nor Republicans always balance budgets. Some do. One does by reducing spending and lowering taxes and the other by increasing spending by increasing taxes.

    Posted by: Obamalet | Jun 26, 2008 2:30:38 PM

  18. @ Obamalet: if that's true, then how do you explain the tenfold increase in spending and tax DECREASE (and stimulus checks!) that have come from the Republicans/Bush Administration?

What's more, if he would continue the Bush tax-cuts, enact further tax cuts and continue the war in Iraq while increasing troop levels (we spend about 400 million a day over there), how is McCain any different than Bush?

    Oh wait... he isn't.

    Obama '08.

  19. I'm for anyone who lowers taxes. Get a job.

    Posted by: mike | Jun 26, 2008 8:57:01 PM

  20. Mike

Your not in the top 1% so you haven't benefited from the so-called tax cuts.

    Posted by: Jimmyboyo | Jun 26, 2008 9:09:00 PM

  21. Normally, I'd not interject, but this time, I'm gonna: to be honest, neither party's gonna do us any good (I'm normally a Dem on most things, but when it comes to fiscal policy, I'm hyper-conservative, being lower-middle class...that's why I'd LIKE to join the LCR, but since they also have crazies as part of the Republican party, I can't, in good conscience)...and to those of you that think the Dems would help us with the budget, it was b/c we had no military during the last 10 years prior to Bush II...that's where the deficit came from...I'd have voted for Kucinich, if anybody, since he was the TRUE marriage champion, but we all saw what that got him (everyone in my family called him "a nutcase"...go figure...)

    Posted by: Cody | Jun 27, 2008 12:07:32 AM

  22. ENDA, DADT, and gay marriage are NOT real problems because the Democrat Party in Congress thinks they are not real problems. ENDA went down in flames, and repeal of DADT didn't even get a hearing in Congress. His highness Obama does not support gay marriage.

And the Stonehead Democrats go along with this stuff all the time always saying "next year" "next year", demanding no results whatsoever.

Congressional Democrats even caved in on the Iraq war, what they supposedly ran for election on. If they did that to their core promise - just think what they're going to do to gay rights. LOL!

    Posted by: DGreatOne | Jun 27, 2008 1:35:58 PM

  23. A gay republican is one of the biggest oxymoron's on the face of this planet! However, democrats aren't too far from being republicans in sheep's clothing. But it is not the dems fault that this country is so out of wack. Thank the Bush Regime and all the repubs for that. Any LCR who uses the 'fiscal' excuse is just plain delusional (amongst many other things)!!!
