News: Lavender, McCain's Shoes, Barney Frank, Scrabulous
Civics Quiz — Ted Stevens vs Larry Craig: "In Congress which is worse: being corrupt or being gay? Time is up. Pencils down. If you answered being gay, you've been paying attention, class. Of the 10 Commandments, it is much better to break the one about stealing than the one about sex."

John McCain's $520 Ferragamo shoes. The Nation's Christopher Hayes: "If I were a right-wing blogger, and I found out that Barack Obama was wearing Ferragamo loafers that cost $520, I would spend about 50% of my waking hours making sure everyone knew this. I would mock him for being an out-of-touch elitist and make jokes like, 'If you think that’s a lot, you should see how much his purse costs!' I would send the link to Drudge and wait for Instapundit to pick it up, and then watch gleefully as Fox News ran segments about how Barack Obama’s $500 loafers vitiate his entire economic platform."

Guy Ritchie says Hard Candy worse than cocaine: "Sugar kills. Think of the calories in sugar. Fat kills more people than anything else. Sugar is responsible for a lot of deaths, arguably more than crack cocaine."

Booted from Facebook, makers of Scrabulous launch new 'Wordscraper' game: "Developers Rajat and Jayant Agarwalla launched Wordscraper worldwide less than 48 hours after being forced to take their original creation, Scrabulous, offline in the US and Canada in response to a lawsuit from Hasbro. The brothers voluntarily closed Scrabulous to North American users on Tuesday following a claim of intellectual property infringement by games manufacturer Hasbro, which owns the online rights in the US and Canada. They have now launched Wordscraper, with significant changes to make the game less like Scrabble."

Barney Frank wants an end to arrests for marijuana possession: "The vast amount of human activity ought to be none of the government's business. I don't think it is the government's business to tell you how to spend your leisure time."
Simon Lee, musical supervisor of the upcoming Toronto production of The Sound of Music fired after alleged assault and imprisonment of 24-year-old man at hotel: "Simon is a very talented person who is extremely important to us. However, on this occasion we felt it was necessary to seek the termination of his engagement on The Sound of Music in Toronto. The alleged events are subject to legal proceedings and, therefore, we can't comment further."

Holy Fucking Hell - Decapitated on a bus while napping? I'll never nap again.
Posted by: Pierre | Jul 31, 2008 2:55:49 PM
I hope the psycho that killed that kid on the bus isn't ever allowed to walk the streets again. Human beings can be so pathetic.
Posted by: SFshawn | Jul 31, 2008 3:15:25 PM
Oh, where to start?
a) Good observations from Ted Stevens, but--which commandment is about sex? (In particular, which one is about gay sex--unless it's the one where you covet your neighbour's ass?)
b)No wonder the Ferragamo shoes are so expensive--they cleverly disguise McCain's cloven hooves.
c) Bus beheading--this is why so many Winnipeggers avoid going home.
d) The 24-year-old that Simon Lee (46) assaulted was apparently his boyfriend. There's still a lot of he-said/he-said going on but--well--the picture practically paints itself.

The bus decapitation story is just crazy fucking scary. Almost scarier than Xtina's hair. Lady looks like a dude trying to look like a lady but clearly failing.

Garnet Caton, who was sitting in front of the decapitated victim, gives his chilling account to CTV's Murray Oliver of what he saw. Warning: Caton's description is graphic

he says the killer was "chinese or a native" --
honey, i stopped reading stephen king a long time ago, i just watch the news...

I hardly can believe something like that happening here... that psycho deserves to be in a lot of pain.
Regarding Simon Lee, I'm so sad, he did a great job on How to Solve a Problem Like Maria... I was excited about traveling to T.O. just to see it.

I love reading this blog, but I notice a recent trend toward misleading reportage, most of all--and worst of all--in the "News" updates. Case in point: Guy Ritchie didn't say Madonna's album was worse than cocaine. Don't sink to the level of other blogs (including the source for that particular item); they're too sensational, and I've come to look to you for more focused, incisive commentary. Peace.

So, since gays are "profiled" and prejudiced against, something you seem to denounce, we should do the same thing to muslims and black people? Not sure I follow.
The guy must be a psychopath, and I strongly doubt his race or religion has anything to do with up.

I watched this news clip at work and I swear it was like re-watching the chainsaw massacre or something. I will never, EVAH, ride Greyhound, EVAH again!! Air Canada, here I come!!
Oh and since he was wearing sun glasses, chances are he(Garnet Caton, the witness)couldn't tell what his ethnicity was hence the "asian(chinese) or native(aboriginal)" theory.
Needless to say how humble Garnet is about the whole thing. One of the journalists suggests that he's "sorta the hero" in this and he said not really. The truck driver who provided them with weapons that allowed them to keep the killer inside the bus until the police showed up is the real hero as they felt helpless until then...Unbelievable!

"Asian or native" doesn't sound like a "muslim or black" to me.
Posted by: Jason | Jul 31, 2008 4:15:44 PM
Well EVAN, I'll have you informed that a native(read aboriginal, as in original inhabitant of this land) most likely committed this crime. Even if it wasn't and it was a caucasian man or black or martian, I believe your kind belongs right over at QUEERTY! So do us all a favor and excuse yourself!!

A bus full of people runs away from one guy with a knife?
Obviously they don't all know each other, but just a small group of them could have restrained the man. Maybe one of them would have gotten cut. Nobody would have gotten beheaded.

So, according to Barny Frank, it's OK to have a law that will protect people who posses and smoke dope but if you happen to be transgender, watch out! We ain't gonna protect your sorry ass! What a fuck wad.

Evan, do you know any one who is a Muslim? Have you ever talked to this person to find out what he/she thinks of the Q'ran and Islamic fundamentalists? Just curious...
Posted by: Mr. E | Jul 31, 2008 5:34:09 PM
@ ThinMint re the wisdom of counter-attacking a psychopath with a knife large enough to cut off someone's head:
The initial reaction of most healthy, mentally sound people upon seeing one person calmly sawing a knife into another person is to RUN LIKE FUCK. Seriously. The world does not prepare you to see what these people saw. You have no idea how much blood is in -- and comes out of -- a human body when pierced by a large metal object. Survival instinct takes over, and you get the hell away as fast as you can.
Hindsight is 20/20 of course, and I'll guarantee those folks on the bus will spend the rest of their lives wondering "What if..." Rather than Monday-morning quarterbacking this, please understand that if you ever have the dire misfortune of encountering lethal insanity, your best hope of staying alive is to put as much distance between you and that person as possible.
And, observationally at least, bus aisles are extremely narrow. You can't get more than one person in them at a time, so there's no easy way that two people could have come at this guy to disarm him without him being able to stab -- probably fatally -- one of them first. This wasn't Flight 93 where they were captive in the air, and by default had time to get past the panic and react affirmatively. Additionally, those folks had room to move (two aisles, at least one galley, and an entire planeload of people.)

Evan, you're talking racist right wing shit about Muslims. There's a difference between religion and religious extremism.
Go to Michelle Malkin's blog with that bullshit.
Having said that, everyone should dump their fairytales.
Posted by: Marco | Jul 31, 2008 5:43:54 PM
Evan, my partner is Muslim, as are his entire family, i.e. my in-laws. He and I have been together for six years. Take a few minutes to wrap your mind around that before you start talking shit again.

I spent two months doing volunteer work in a muslim country, and from my personal experience, it is quite untrue that Islam "is a belief system of death, destruction, and domination". There are some barbaric aspects present in ancient muslim texts, but the same can be said of judaism and christianity. I believe in God but I understand that a lot of stuff that people get from ancient texts comes from old, outdated ways of thinking and they do not inform my beliefs. The same can be said of muslims. Actually, it is a religion strongly rooted in principles of love.
I understand where your point of view comes from, but I can't rally behind it. Saying the guy must have been a muslim just because, that is racist and bigoted.

Ferragamos are great shoes. I've worn them since my 20's. You don't have to break them in at all, and they are very well made, though the style worn by McCain were a bit flashy and garish.
That story about the bus incident was way scary, but wouldn't it take a while to cut someone's head off, even with a huge knife? How horrific! Imagine the visual for those poor people who were witnesses. Yeah, that guy was clearly a deranged psycho on a rampage. People are just fucking nuts anymore. What's the world coming to?
Posted by: Chad | Jul 31, 2008 10:59:37 PM
That bus incident was horrifying and I think the guys who tried to keep him inside the bus did do the right thing. The guy Garnet Caton (good looking BTW) did try did try to get someone to help but they all ran away.
