Sounds like Tricky or Massive Attack circa ’98. I’m not impressed at all. The ship has sailed on industrial electronica a long time ago.

  2. alguien says

wow! sounds almost as if our grace has hooked up with massive attack or some other trip-hop-type producers.

the song itself was…ok-kind of a revisit to the “rhyme all the tyme” lyric style of “walking in the rain.”

i’m interested to hear the rest of the album.

Miss Jones is the mother of all freaks and I love her to pieces. I think the song is great too. I love Trip Hop and dark Electronica and the lyrics are simple but awesome. I’ll have to download this when it comes out.

I’ve been watching this video all morning and blowing off work. The imagery is pure Grace in the 21st century.

RP, if the ship has sailed for industrial electronica, then I’m happy to take the cruise. Nothing wrong with keeping oneself open to different genres.

According to Wikipedia, Tricky does appear on her new album. And she just performed last month in London at an electronic music festival hosted by Massive Attack. So the comparisons are probably warranted.

Honestly, I had no interest in this until several of you made the comparison to Massive Attack, one of my favorite bands. They supposedly have a new album due out this year too. Dark electro is not dead!

  6. Mark says

CRISPY, you might be interested to know that Tricky has a new album due to release in the US in September, called Knowle West Boy. I heard an advance and think it’s his best since Maxinquaye

Actually, this track is from her first album since 1989’s Bulletproof Heart… Grace HAS released a smattering of material since then. She had the track SEX DRIVE in the early 90’s, and then in the late 90’s released an amazing song called STORM on the otherwise forgettable (aside from Annie Lennox’s cover of the Sugercubes MAMA) soundtrack to the shit movie adaptation of THE AVENGERS. Long live Grace!

  8. John in Manhattan says

I adore Grace and so does a close friend who runs a major record label. A couple of months ago he went to Chris Blackwell’s (founder of Island Records) home in Jamaica and Chris played him Grace’s new album. My friend said its unlistenable.

“C’mon, its Grace Jones! It can’t be that bad?”
“Oh yes, its THAT BAD. You’ll be shocked.”

    We shall hear.

My God, 19 years later and she’s STILL more vital than every crap pop act cluttering up the market. I was AMAZED by how good this is. It’s brilliant and darkly funny.

Thinking about this in the context of her entire body of work gives me chills of excitement. What an inspiration. Hell yeah she’s scary. Sometimes it’s good to be scared.

    She doesn’t age. It’s amazing.

Love her, but will never forgive her for keeping fans waiting four hours in DC about 12 years ago for a performance that was already not supposed to start until midnight. A lot of people left, including me—I only know when she came on because one of my friends then was a hardcore fan. DC isn’t NYC. To top it off, she only played three or four songs, then stormed offstage.

Another friend of mine went to an afterhours she hosted in NYC and said it featured public displays of the most graphic BDSM acts he’d ever seen or imagined (including a fair bit of blood). But I can’t say that’s a major surprise!

Was a fan until she came into a friends restaurant in the mid 80’s down in the West Village. She was with her entourage and she ordered a White Russian. She sent it back three times, the first two was with my friend Lisa, who was 8 months pregnant and she came back close to tears.

Next my friend Suzanne went, we called her the abusive waitress, and she said ‘I’m not going back to that bitch’.

Finally my friend Bruce the bartender, who was tired of making a fourth drink, poured it back into the shaker, spit into it, and brought it to the table himself. ‘Ms Jones, I’m the bartender here and I want to say what a huge fan I am and I made this special just for you’. To which Ms Jones praised, ‘Now that is a cocktail’.

And she is one mega bitch. Great singer, but a total douche.

  14. Paul R says

Thanks for the story, Patrick. I’ve always wondered why I couldn’t make a proper white Russian. Now I know the secret ingredient.

She really does overdo the diva act, though I honestly think she might have some mental problems.

  15. johnny says

all artists are partially or wholly crazy. that’s what makes them able to bring you this kind of art without being shy about it.

    Yes, she’s crazy, she’s scary, she’s beautiful, she’s a diva and she’s 60 years old now… amazing.

  16. patrick nyc says

Sorry JOHNNY but not all artist are crazy, or egomaniacs like Ms Jones. Nothing against her talent, which she does have. It’s who she is to ‘real people’. You don’t throw shit at waiters who are trying to make a living and get a pass.

As for hitting 60, Annie Lenox, my fave, is hitting 55, Meryl Streep is 59, age has little or nothing to do with being an artist, or being a bitch, or bastard for the male schmucks like Elton John, Boy George or our latest tabloid fave A-Rod from the Yankees. Yes Crazy can be cool, but not if you are out of control or out of your mind, see Amy Whinehouse or Brittney.

THIS IS FUCKING FANTASTIC! I HAVE WAITED MANY HRS FOR HER TO COME ON AND EVERYTIME IT WAS AMAZING! I EVEN GOT TRULY WASTED AND PASSED OUT ONE TIME AND MISSED HER WHOLE SHOW. I STILL HAD AN KILLER TIME! SHE ONCE SAT NEXT TO ME IN THE VIP ROOM OF THE HOLLYWOOD PALADIUM. SHE ORDERED ME TO GO GET HER A CHAMPAGNE. WHEN I GAVE IT TO HER SHE SAID, “SIT!” I SAT NEXT TO HER FOR THE REST OF THE EVENING. SHE NEVER SAID ANOTHER WORD TO ME BUT EVERYONE IN THE ROOM WAS CRAZY JEALOUS! I LOVE HER! CHECK OUT HER CITROEN COMMERCIAL ON YOUTUBE. THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE HATING ON HER DON’T KNOW YOUR SHIT, SORRY. LISTEN TO HER SING LA VIE EN ROSE AND TELL ME SHE’S NOT AN INCREDIBLE SINGER. THIS SONG AND VIDEO ARE WAY BETTER THAN ANYTHING I’VE HEARD LATELY.

    GO GRACE!

    NOW, WHERE’S MALCOLM MCLAREN?

  18. says

Oh John, lighten up! You must live in the new Manhattan of double wide strollers with two store bought Chinese babies and a Dominican Manny who takes care of Brittney and Logan while you figure out if the Tom Ford swimsuits are worth the cost for you and Courts’ trip to the Hamptons.

Yes, people used to get wasted, pass out and still wake up with a smile and a super big gulp coke! Sorry your ass was too tight to ever do a booty bump.

I’m just funnin’ ya! Lighten up! LOL!

  19. Matty says

well, it’s about f*cking time! Music has been so dull without some Grace in my face. Love the new song, it’s Grace in great form, can’t wait for the album!

  20. el polacko says

love love LOVE me some grace !! i was just recently saying that she still looks and sounds great and that somebody should be recording her again so i’m thrilled to find out that there’s a new cd on the way.
excellent vid too. thanks for the heads up.

Echo El Polacko — I LOVE THAT WOMAN, and am so glad she’s back. I have very fond memories of Slave to the Rhythm on my walkman when I was a tiny little gay boy, punch drunk and dug out in Key West in the 80’s
