Rearview Mirror: Looking Back on Towleroad at the DNC

Trm132

Last week Towleroad was at the Democratic National Convention in Denver as one of two LGBT credentialed blogs (something we received some flak for). While the week was hectic and two people can only cover so much, I hope that Corey Johnson and I were able to provide some interesting LGBT-related content and interviews with folks at the convention you might not have seen in the mainstream press. Here are some of the highlights:

On a related note, Corey is now Towleroad's Political Director and we'll likely be producing more online video content in the weeks to come with folks inside the political spectrum. I'd like to personally thank Corey for the fantastic job he did in helping Towleroad cover this Convention.

I also want to give a big thanks to Kenneth Walsh from Kenneth in the 212 for providing alternate coverage and news while I was away. I encourage you to give his site a visit.

As an additional note, Towleroad may be taking an extended Labor Day break. We'll see you next week at some point.

  2. Loves me some Andy pictures--we don't get enough of those! Sexy and sweaty works for me!

  3. Andy is quite attractive. Yum.

  4. Chris, Asher & Eric aside -

Bravo to you both for exceptional coverage. For the last year Towleroad has been the source of information from my political perspective, your coverage of the convention simply added to my respect for your ability to cover these events for the LGBT community. Congratulations and thanks.

Now for your next assignment -

I think you both should cover an end of summer pool party, appropriately dressed in speedos...

  5. I have to say that Corey is pretty effin' adorable.

Kudos on a job well done. Thanks. I hope you enjoy a well deserved break.

  6. I won't be voting for Democrats. This is because of their bisexual double standard (female sexual fluidity "hot", male sexual fluidity "gross" or insignificant). While I concede that not all Democrats have this double standard, it is beyond doubt that it is institutionalized in liberal mainstream culture. I didn't realize how pervasive this double standard was until recent years. Liberals should know better.

Therefore, the Democrats can wave goodbye to my vote.

  8. Thank god you are back, Andy!!!

That arrogant "guest"--if you want to call it that--blogger was HORRID.

The audacity to post rows of graduating photoshopped pictures of himself on your site was JUST uncalled for.

You almost never post pics of yourself and this is YOUR blog. What made him think that was justified??? Touting himself so imperiously on YOUR site--EEECCCCKKKK!!!!

Then to link almost every post to his freshman site--what??? just to get the hits--was MORE than I could handle!!!

I CONCLUDED to ONLY read your posts from Denver and that was ALL by Monday afternoon.

Then--for him to pester that "Band Fag" book on your site was the last straw!!!

Please--don't subject your readers to him ever again.

Congrats on making Corey PD of TR. I think that is WONDERFUL.

This will take the blog in a GREAT new direction!!!

Again--so glad your back... ALL SAFE AND SOUND!!!

  10. I'M VOTING OBAMA & BIDEN, I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT HE WILL LEAD OUR COUNTRY BACK TO ITS GLORY!! I still LOVE Hillary Clinton*

    I'm excited once again.....

  11. Welcome back, Andy!

Though I appreciated your posts from Denver, things here were NOT going well. Your guest blogger was far too self-aggrandizing for this site. That experiment failed miserably.

Enjoy your time off, and I'll look forward to your return!

  12. I can't express how grateful I am to you both. Relevant stories were covered, opinions I wasn't aware of were expressed and their was nonef the "NOI -O- BOI' stuff the x-tianist were so afraid of.

    THANKS.

  13. SO are you two covering the Republican convention too? You're journalists right?

Posted by: Vi Agara | Aug 31, 2008 9:24:57 AM

  14. (sniff)
    bubbby Mark (sniff)
    We'll miss you SOMETHING FIERCE!
Enjoy your ride in the back of the GOP bus!

  15. What you aren't covering the Republican convention.

Is FOX the only one that is fair and balanced? LOL

    Posted by: kujhawker | Aug 31, 2008 10:31:56 AM

  16. Hey, Vi Agara: The Republicans would never grant Towleroad media credentials. Your stupid question points out the reason any self-respecting gay person wouldn't vote for a Republican even if he or she has lots of carefully considered conservative beliefs on various issues. The other reason is Sarah Palin—yikers!

  17. Andy, you are a bona fide hunk. Gorgeous. And with brains too!!!

    Posted by: nikko | Aug 31, 2008 1:08:01 PM

  18. Thanks for your good work. I was hoping you'd also be attending the Republican Convention. Now THIS is a convention that will need more 3-dimensional coverage than we are bound to receive from the mainstream press...

  19. Andy, damn, I don't know what to say. I guess I'll just concur with the other guys here and add my "Whoof!" to the pile.

Great job covering the convention! Thank you so much for Towleroad, it keeps me sane during my long night-shift. The coverage was great, the issues were appropriate and informative. Well done.

  20. I was in Pittsburgh this weekend and was we were having breakfast at Tom's diner when about 12 black suv's. and 2 McCain busses pull up and about 100 secret service men take over the block. I was surprised to have met and shaken the hands of John and Cindy McCain, Sarah Palin and her husband as well as 3 of the Palin's children. 5 minutes later they were all gone and the street was back to normal. Amazing

  21. Andy,

Your blog really got turned up a notch the last week and went to a new level! It was nice to see the increase in content, political and fluff! I think Kenneth did a great job and I hope you have him back again.

  22. have to agree with others that the guest blogger was not up to the task... but i guess that's why it's towleroad and not kenneth-whoever-road. note to Kenneth, if you're reading: i'm sure you meant well, but you can avoid alienating readers by refraining from writing sentences that start, "i like to think of myself as the ultimate...". we read that far and then stop.

  23. TEX... I'll assume you meant your reply for the comment below mine.

  24. job well done.

but what i want to know is, will you two be bumpin' uglies. can we watch?

i'm jus' playin'. good job, guys.

  25. Just to get a head start on things in New Orleans and the rest of the Gulf Coast:

So far it looks like Gustav won't be as destructive as Katrina, but there's still going to be a lot of damage and plenty of people in need of help.
