The Tattooed Prince: William Wants to Get Inked

One of Prince William's military pals told UK tab The Sun that the future king was interested in a massive back tattoo:
"Lots of the guys onboard sport tattoos. It was obvious William was fascinated. He asked how painful it was and wanted to know what they thought of his idea for a tattoo across his shoulders. We didn’t think he was serious — but he said he was keen to get a large tattoo like the one David Beckham has. He said the only thing stopping him was his girlfriend. He was worried she would think it was a bit too chavvy."
Surely her majesty wouldn't approve.

Maybe he could get a tattoo of his brother on his back, and that way we could see twice as much of Hot Harry.

The precedent been set already.
Tattooing gained royal sanction in l862 when the Prince of Wales visited the Holy Land and had the Jerusalem Cross tattooed on his arm. In later life, as King Edward VII, he acquired a number of additional tattoos. When his sons, the Duke of Clarence and the Duke of York (later King George V) visited Japan in 1882, Edward VII instructed their tutor to take them to the studio of celebrated master Hori Chiyo, who tattooed dragons on their arms. On the way home the two Dukes visited Jerusalem and were tattooed by the same artist who had tattooed their father 20 years before.

JeffG166:
And?

Very interesting, JEFFG166 - thanks for posting that.
People like to act so elite as they pretend their disdain for tattoos results from the inherent "chavviness"/trashiness of them and they act like this current trend is something unheard of and brand new.
Tattooing has a rich history. You don't have to partake in it if you don't like, but it cannot be denied as an art form and/or a form of expression, whether it be seen as "original" or not.
You say "tomato", I say "tomato". I say "tattoo", you say "tanning booth".

'nuff said!

Thanks to JEFFG166 for the fascinating bit of history. I had always presumed royalty were in the habit of keeping their bodies uninked.
And thanks to Peterparker for the other vivid insight. Indeed, sailors poring over each other's bodies -- tattooed or otherwise -- is enough to make me dizzy.

Well, I agree with Diana Vreeland (who was the epitome of chic) who said "Never ink your body".
Tats will look ridiculous on a 80 year old body, regardless of who you are. I have yet to see one done in good taste. They are all pedestrian-looking and look like they were done in a drunken stupor.

Chad, when I'm 80, if I'm even slightly worried about how my tattoos look, I will be a lucky, lucky man.
