McCain Pulls Out of Michigan

The McCain-Palin campaign is pulling out of Michigan to place its resources elsewhere,
Politico reports:

Mccain"A McCain aide confirmed the move and chalked it up to the state's Democratic tilt and the resources Obama had put in place there. 'It was always a long shot for us to win,' said the aide. McCain will now turn his attention to bolstering his defenses in Ohio and Florida while putting more resources into Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and the second congressional district of Maine, where there is a sole electoral vote available. Obama's campaign offered a muted response to McCain's decision to abandon Michigan, only promising to keep it in the Democratic column."

Also, the Florida GOP leadership held a secret meeting this afternoon to strategize over what to do about McCain's sag there.

Meanwhile, CNN has been talking this afternoon about McCain's remarks vs. his vote on the bailout bill.

Think Progress reports that after voting for the bill, McCain seemed to suggest that Bush should veto it. Wolf Blitzer and Glenn Beck this afternoon replayed some tape from last week in which McCain vowed to oppose the bailout if it was filled with earmarks, which it was. Beck said he thinks McCain's vote cost him the election.

And the sideshow of this act is Sen. Joe Lieberman, who went on FOX News today and said that he hopes the bill is passed because "it will be good for John McCain."

  1. This pattern of dichotomous talk v. rhetoric is s.o.p. for McCain. While Chairman of the Commerce Committee, McCain routinely voted against proposed legislation that he wrote and sponsored. He often left his colleagues hanging in the wind because they were never sure how he would vote or what he would say.

Hearings that he chaired were like an episode of The Twilight Zone. He would raise any subject unrealted to the measure under consideration but would cut-off other committee members for raising "non-germane" topics, even when directly on point. He acts as if he has attention deficit disorder syndrome: he can call obscure facts to mind but frequently loses his train of thought. There were never any action points, i.e., resolution to any of the hearings. He used the hearings as an opportunity to berate the witnesses, even if he had called them to testify in support of some measure. The man is truly a loose cannon, fully loaded with live ammunition but completely unmoored.

  2. McCain is doing so many things that even conservative pundits are saying will "cost him the election" that it's downright dizzying. I guess he's hoping there will be so many they'll start canceling each other out. Unless Palin pulls off a miracle tonight, he might as well permanently suspend his campaign. Not that the dirty Republican tricksters won't try to pull a few fast ones before this is all over . . .

  3. Does anyone see the resemblance between McCain and the Hush villains on Buffy?
