Portugal Says no to Same-Sex Marriage
The Portuguese parliament voted down same-sex marriage today.
"The governing Socialist Party and the main opposition Social Democratic Party both opposed legalizing gay and lesbian marriages. The proposals came from two minor opposition parties, the Left Bloc and the Green Party, which argued that the Portuguese Constitution grants equal rights for all and protection against discrimination. But the Green Party motion collected only 17 votes in the 230-seat legislature, and the left Bloc won the support of just 11 lawmakers. Gay marriage is permitted in only three European Union nations — Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain."

Andy, you should probably mention that Norway will join those three countries on Jan. 1 of next year. That's when the law they passed is set to take effect.

SAMI, it doesn't mention Norway because it says "only three European Union nations" and Norway isn't in the EU. Would be worth a note from Andy though, you're right.

It should be noted that the governing Socialist Party issued a type of "gag order" on all its parliamentary members, called "disciplina", FORCING them to vote with the party (in defeating the measure) whether they wanted to or not. Only 1 member, Manuel Alegre, voted his conscience. It seems clear that PM José Socrates (himself widely rumored to be gay) wants to sweep this issue under the carpet in the face of next year's elections. The Socialist Youth Movement, the Left Bloc and the Greens have promised to keep up the fight.
