David Cook Speaks Out Against Prop 8

DavidcookLOGO's NewNowNext posted an interview with American Idol winner David Cook on Friday in which he talked about a variety of topics, including Proposition 8 and gay rights:

"You know...I was not able to vote for Prop 8 because I'm not a resident of Los Angeles but I would have loved to have seen it (go) the other way. Human rights is human rights and I don't really see how sexuality parlays into whether or not you're a human being. I grew up in a really cool area of the country where tolerance was kind of the norm. I can't recall at any point in my life ever feeling uncomfortable about sexuality whether it be my own or anyone else's...It's an interesting time to be a homosexual in this country. I hope that very soon we get to this point where we look back now, [like] on women's rights and that struggle in the 20's - I hope this is another hurdle this country can overcome really quick."

Watch it, AFTER THE JUMP...

  1. "It's an interesting time to be a homosexual in this country" ...feel free to call me gay, I'm not a republican.

  2. Meanwhile, when asked about gay marriage, David Archuleta sat behind his piano giggling nervously until father Jeff Archuleta stepped in and shooed reporters away.

  4. What the hell is he talking about? He grew up in Blue Springs, MO. I've lived in Blue Springs. When he was growing up there, it was not as awful as the deep South, but I would never characterize it as especially tolerant or gay-friendly.

  5. Is David Cook gay? If not, I doubt -- as an oblivious straight man -- he's aware of what tolerance really means up in Montana.

  6. I think we should all be tollerant of eachother eventually gay or straight we will be judged for our heart. God created man and woman to reproduce any other configuration is an abomination to god he does not call for us to hate others for thier choices he calls for us to love our neighbors. Only by love can we have tollerance of one another there is enough hate in the world without making more. If you claim to be a bible reading Christian were in the bible does it say you should be against your neighbor in anyway I have never read that anyware. I am not gay I love Jesus and those who dont know him will never come to know him if we dont show them we care and win them over with love and understanding it is not up to us to convict them but only to share the gospel the holy spirit will do the rest god bless yall.

  7. Missouri.

oh, and I got a vibe.

  8. Cook wouldn't care about the issue seriously. Why not? Because he is not gay. If he is gay, he would feel really passionate about it. But since he is not, why would he be against homosexuals and lose popularity? He is saying,"Gays, solve your own problems. I am going to marry a girl, have kids and live a normal life. My life is problem free."

  9. To Nick.. are you kidding me? I think you are being pretty intolerant which cracks me up when you consider the intolerance towards gays and lesbians. I am not gay either, but that doesnt mean that I dont care about the issue. My brother and one of my sons are both gay and I love them so I do care about what affects them. As for Davids comments causing him to lose fans and sales that was going to happen the minute he answered the question asked in a straightforward manner instead of dancing around it like alot of others do. You said that saying he is against gay marriage would cost him popularity.. do you think that saying he does not support proposition 8 gained him any fans in the parts of the country that are still backwards enough to discriminate against people for sexual orientation? He does flyover rock.. hello that is alot of midwest and they are not the most tolerant bunch out there.. i live there so trust me i know. I think you are maybe a little judgemental yourself.

  10. Look, let's face facts- the truth of the matter is that the gay community wants to destroy the idea of marriage altogether. We are seeing the fundamentally violent and anarchic nature of the gay community in their response to the passage of CA Prop 8. The gay community is comprised of deranged thugs and sociopaths, and they will stop at nothing to ram their twisted agenda down everyone else's throats.

Sodomy is a fundamentally violent, invasive act with persistently traumatic medical aftereffects, it is not an act of "love." Homosexuality is a mental illness, and it needs to be dealt with as such. It was removed from the DSM-IV due to political pressure, not as a result of scientific findings. The "normalization" of homosexuality is a threat to the well-being of anyone who struggles with a mental illness, and it simply can no longer be tolerated as a "normal" behavior.

The push for gay "marriage" is not a push for "rights," it is a push for violent anarchy and the complete overthrow of public safety. The homosexual agenda does not end with "marriage"- the next items on the gay agenda include the abolition of age-of-consent laws, the legalization of sexual indoctrination of children, and the legalization of uncontrolled gay orgies on public street corners. It must be stopped at any cost.

  11. So do you think 48% of Californians are gay? Because obviously we who aren't wouldn't care enough to vote against Prop 8. I don't know how passionate is is about it but I do know his girlfriend is very passionate about gay rights because she has family she loves who are gay as I do. I'm not but I care. Kansas City is a much more tolerant city than Omaha where my lesbian sister lives. She used to go there at least once a month. I also think our views toward tolerance is colored by how we were raised.

The fact of the matter is that he didn't have to do this interview at all. Did he stand to gain and lose a few fans over it? Sure, but I can't see how that played into his decision to do the interview. No other American Idol ever talked to a GLBT publication. Hell, Chris Daughtry was part of a voting campaign this year where he was oh so very careful not to ever mention once who he might vote for and, even so, some fans thought he should shut up and sing.

  12. "Sodomy is a fundamentally violent, invasive act"

Bob, you're just doing it wrong.

  13. The derogatory comment by Crispy about Archuleta and his dad was completely uncalled for, not to say stupid. Sheesh. So much for going without prejudices.

Anyway. I love Cook. He's a great guy! YAY for him supporting equal civil rights for everyone!

  14. Bob if you would just relax it would feel better.

  15. Straight white female here who grew up in Cook's area. In my experience, there's still quite of bit of intolerance here.

LOL on all the Bob jokes.

  16. I think what we've seen of David Cook is that he is not judgemental. He actually never has a bad word to say about anyone and doesn't like mean-spirited people. He truly does believe that every human being should be treated with respect and dignity and should have the same rights across the board.
