The Wicked Witch of the West is Over Southern California

Skywriting

And she's writing in the sky.

Our reader Liam sent in this message, accompanied by the photo above:

"Just now, leaving work at Warner Brothers in Burbank, CA, I was horrified to see a plane scarring the sky with a 'vote yes on prop 8' message, prefaced with something about traditional marriage that was already illegible. It's a breezy day out here, so the message was hardly readable for more than a minute or so. Let's hope the proposition doesn't even last that long tomorrow morning."

The "No on Prop 8" campaign is asking for last minute contributions to fund phone efforts: "Your contribution will fund one million last-minute phone calls to pre-identified No on Prop 8 voters and our massive effort on the ground. If every one of our 170,000 supporters receiving this email makes a small gift of $10, $25, $75 or more, or asks a friend to donate, we will meet our goal of $500,000."

Do not surrender, Californians. Call everyone you know. Get out and vote down discrimination.

  1. When one thinks it can't get any more ridiculous...wow. Just wow. The extremism has reached a new level...literally.

I am sick of living in this state these past weeks. Can't go to a restaurant, store, without the radio blaring lie-filled ads from the haters. Those idiotic, intolerant signs on the street. The disgusting lie-ridden TV commercials--in different languages no less!

Not to mention the phone calls, which also spread lies. And the mailers. In the newspaper, their ads. With that spider-shaped logo.

It's disgusting and offensive. I am glad that, unlike for Prop 22 in 2000, there is a much more visible pushback. But I'm not sure it's enough.

  2. Speaking of hate, here's what happened to my car overnight in Los Angeles. My No On 8 signs were also spray painted over.

  3. There will be a No On 8 rally at the corner of Santa Monica Blvd. and Rodeo in Beverly Hills for any who would like to show up. 5:30 - 7:00 pm

  5. Sadly, saw this same crap over Century City. Afterwards, drove home and passsed a bunch of No on 8 supporters in front of the Mormon Temple on Santa Monica and few blocks west Yes on 8 twats at Westwood.

I can't wait until the elections are over and these hatemongers aren't everywhere.

  6. I am very sad to say that I think Prop 8 will indeed pass. This makes me frustrated and sad, and I've never felt so much hurt seeing people in town I respected with their YES on 8 signs, people who I work with with their YES on 8 bumper stickers...so very sad.

  7. I live in Silverlake (LA) and I saw this shit from my back yard.

It was so nice, the wind kicked up and destroyed this hateful shit.

  8. As a holder of a CA marriage license, this New Yorker is hoping that the people of CA will do the right thing tomorrow. I lived in CA for three years and off-and-on for three more. I travel there at least once a month on business. I came out in CA, I met my husband (and the love of my life) almost 20 years ago in CA, and I have a lot of friends in CA. CA, please don't let me down tomorrow.

Thanks, Andy, for giving "No on Prop. 8" the attention it deserves!

  9. Anonymous: do you have a plan B in mind should the Constitution be amended? They can not un-do your marriage, but what happens should Prop 8 become law? Any thoughts?

  10. FYI - I just donated another $50 to No on 8.

That makes $900 from this married gay house.

Andy ... thank you, thank you, thank you for keeping up the fight!

  11. Just gave another 50! Thanks Andy!

  12. We were standing on the street in Corona Del Mar. We'd just finished lunch with some friends when we noticed the plane starting to sky write. We had thought about getting married today just in case 8 passed (not spur of the moment - we've been together 27 years). We were joking that maybe we needed a sign. With that the "SAVE TRADITIONAL ..." blew away in a huge gust of wind. Less than an hour later we were groom and groom.

  13. Hope it doesn't pass. It would be a sad commentary on my fellow Californian's if it does... and even if it passes by 1 vote, we'll hear the endless chants of "God's Will, etc. etc. etc.
But if it does somehow pass, get ready for round 2 - which will be the lawsuit to stop it from ever taking effect. I think the Supreme Court would issue an immediate stay pending case resolution. I think they would rule it a Constitution revision rather an amendment - or... since gay's can't be married NO ONE can be married... wouldn't that just be poetic justice.

  14. That wasn't a plane. It was the Flying Blue Monkeys, working for the various Wicked Mormon Bitches of the West.

Boys and girls: if they win we've got to make them regret it somehow and I don't just mean whining on blogs and over cocktails at our favorite watering holes.

But, yes, A STANDING OVATION for the wonderful job Andy's done raising money and keeping people informed when some of our gay celebs are too busy clubbing with Paris Hilton or worrying about leg room for chickens.

And ALSO for taking the Presidential election seriously!

  15. It's very nerve-racking to see how things will turn out tomorrow. But we are being represented in ALL counties here in this state, so let's keep fighting the good fight.
Andy.. always been a huge fan of your blog and thank you for posting a link to donate to NO on 8... just donated today.

  16. Yes, huge props to Andy for keeping this visible and keeping everyone updated as things play out here in CA! Regardless of what happens tomorrow, I am very proud of the time, effort, and money that so many people (gay and straight) have given to stop this from passing.

  17. I'm in Orange County (Irvine, to be exact), so even though this put me in a foul mood after an already bad day, it didn't surprise me too much - but I'm shocked that this was going on over such a wide area. I guess they can't spend that money from out-of-state Mormon and Catholic groups fast enough. >:(

  18. How a plane could leave a message like this ?

Am I the only one who think that?

    It's impossible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Posted by: taz389 | Nov 4, 2008 3:38:16 AM

  19. It's pointless to donate any more money! Go out and vote!

Apparently, there is a lot of confusion regarding the wording of the prop. Some people think No means No to gay marriage, while others think (correctly) that Yes means No to gay marriage. What the % of confused there is that will vote is hard to say, but it leaves the election in doubt.

  20. A person who disagrees that gays should marry is NOT a hatemonger as you call them, they're expressing their opinion... how is that different from you, other than that it's a different opinion?

Yes on 8 is a good thing. The people of Calif. are sick and tired of a tiny minority of loudmouths ruining their state with their thug-like tactics and namecalling. This is more than a YES on Prop 8, it's a signal to the courts that you can't legislate from the bench. This is still a free country and if the majority of citizens decide that gays can't marry, then they can't! Get over it and don't try to legislate in changes that you can't get voted in. :)

  21. WYATT: you're correct, it's impossible. It's someone faking a message to trick people into thinking and reacting in a way that will work to his advantage.

Same way with Obamedia types lying and saying that Republican's are shouting "Kill him" about Barry and "Vote McCain, you're white"

None of it ever happened and it's just a (weak) way to try and influence the public.

  22. I live in a really liberal part of very liberal San Francisco. I've voted at the same polling station for the last 16 years, and it's never taken me longer than 5 minutes to vote. This morning, it took my well over an hour. When I was done, the line was all the way down the block.

All these people were there to vote against Prop 8 and for Obama. You've got to believe.
