Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov Explains Gay Ban: They Spread AIDS

Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov said at an AIDS conference in Moscow Thursday that he suppresses the opinions of gays because they spread AIDS:

Luzhkov"Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, speaking at an HIV/AIDS conference in Moscow, also said there was no scientific proof that condoms provided full protection against sexually transmitted diseases. 'We have banned, and will ban, the propaganda of sexual minorities' opinions because they can be one of the factors in the spread of HIV infection,' Luzhkov was quoted as saying by state-owned RIA. 'Some home-grown democrats consider that sexual minorities are a major indicator and symbol of democracy but we will continue to ban the spread of their views,' Luzhkov said. Luzhkov's administration has banned several gay rights marches in Moscow in the interests, it argues, of ensuring security and preventing public disorder."

Not that Luzhkov has ever been an enlightened fellow. In January 2007, Luzhkov branded gays "satanic" and has continually attempted to quash any type of pro-gay gathering.

  1. Can someone please tell me exactly what percentage of world HIV/AIDS cases gay people are responsible for? Somehow I'm guessing straight people are still responsible for the majority.

  2. It's still hard to believe that after more than 25 years people are still so clueless about HIV. And condom makers and health care workers have NEVER claimed that condoms "offer full protection!" Such a fucking dumbass! The only "full protection" is to not have sex. Someone, please get this guy a book!

  3. Exactly, Mr. E!

Condom makers have never even claimed that condoms "offer full protection" against pregnancy either.

  4. Wow, he sounds just like ex-gay therapist, Jim Phelan:

  5. If spreading AIDS is the reason why Mr. Luzhov is clamping down on "gay propaganda," then by his own admission, he should shut up and suppress himself, given that he's apparently questioning condom usage as a preventive measure against the spread of AIDS.

  6. "he suppresses the opinions of gays because they spread AIDS:"

Because gays spread AIDS or their opinions do?

He probably doesn't see a distinction.

  9. Now that is scapegoating since it has been widely reported that HIV in Russia is concentrated in IV drug users and their sex partners.

  10. What I can't believe, is that the people of the Soviet Union post-Glasnost are choosing to return right back to the oppression that they had lived with for years!

I mean, WTF? First KGB gunslinger Putin comes to power, then Medvedev all but offers up the Presidency.

    DAMN! Enjoy yer gulags.

  11. The foremost AIDS specialist in Russia, Vadim Pokrovsky, says he was "dumbfounded" by Luzhkov's claim. Pokrovsky points out that the HIV rate among gay men in Russia is about 5% -- much less than in many comparable countries.

He was also "surprised" at Luzhkov's claim about condoms not working. "They reduce the risk by about 300 times."
