Fundies Orchestrate Anti-Gay Coup of Women's Group in Singapore

A Singapore lawyer, Thio Su Mien, has orchestrated a coup of a major women's advocacy group in Singapore because of her concerns that it had become too "pro-lesbian" and "pro-homosexual".

A reader writes:

"I'm writing to to ask for support as well as to highlight a situation that is unfolding rather dramatically in the island nation of Singapore. It involves a hostile takeover of a women's advocate group by Christian fundamentalists linked with Focus on the Family who have been actively and successfully preventing any progression of basic gay and women's rights in Singapore. Earlier in March, Singapore’s most prominent, oldest and only women’s advocate group, AWARE, held their Annual General Meeting. Members were to vote and elect a new executive board. It turned out to be a hostile takeover. The group essentially organized supporters of their cause (through church links) to oust long serving members of the group from the executive committee. They did this by getting people who had previously no interest in AWARE's activities to sign up as members sympathetic to the fundamentalist rhetoric right before the elections were to be held. The old executive committee had no idea what hit them until the election was well under way."

The Straits Times: "Dr Thio, 71, a born-again Christian who runs her own law firm, is the mother of Nominated Member of Parliament Thio Li-ann and her nephew, Dr Alan Chin, is married to new Aware president Josie Lau.She was the first woman dean of the Law Faculty at the then-University of Singapore, from 1969 to 1971. Disturbed by what she saw as signs that it was promoting lesbianism and homosexuality, she began urging women she knew to challenge Aware's attempts to redefine marriage and families. On Thursday, the new Aware leaders said that they and their families had been threatened and even received death threats, and they have reported them to the police."

A group of news links chronicling these events can be found here. An online petition has been started to oppose the new group.

If you watch the disgusting video of this woman's daughter, Thio Li-Ann, mentioned above, presenting her anti-gay agenda to parliament, you can see where they're coming from. Watch it, AFTER THE JUMP...

  3. The new executive committee recently held a press conference, a transcript of the proceedings can be found here http://http://wayangparty.com/?p=8201 FYI, homosexuality is still illegal in Singapore's code of law.

  4. This woman is the fruit of the worldwide evangelical christian movement. It would be wise to view this video as a warning that the poisonous anti-gay, anti-progressive ideology of the radical, religious right-wing of the United States has found fertile ground to grow in places like Africa and Asia. I live in Queens, NY. My neighborhood in the past 10 years has become very Asian--Chinese and Korean primarily but increasingly people from Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, et al. Let me tell, they are very homophobic! The woman in the video is articulate and compelling and presents her arguments against the repeal of anti-sodomy statutes in Indonesia with conviction. What is disturbing is how much hatred is being uttered by her under the guise of "logical debate". What is even more disturbing is how many people she will influence to vote against repeal. I thought it very telling that she uses the same arguments that the right-wing uses here in America: (a) gays choose to be homosexual; (b) gays can change their sexual "orientation"; (c) gay is a lifestyle choice and not a natural, immutable, unchangeable result of biology; and (d) gays are primarily educated and wealthy and should not be given "special rights"--all of which are untrue. She also slipped in the usual slander that recognizing "homosexuality" as a civil right means that society will next have to recognize bestiality and pedophilia as civil rights also. That woman is EVIL!

  5. Go fuck yourself squarely, you bigoted fucking whore, I don't care how you try to smear gays, YOU are what is harmful to society, not gay people!

  6. Who cares. Singaporeans deserve the police state they've created. How many gay people have ever stood up to the bigotry and oppression there? A handful maybe? They could make themselves heard but the majority are complicit in their own subjugation. Screw 'em. I gave up on this police state years ago having known two too many of them.

  8. at the end she says, "Homosexuals do not deserve special rights, just the rights we all have."

    Isn't that our point?

  9. ALOT of people in Singapore are fired up. It's been front page news in Singapore for the past three weeks. It's all out war in the press, on the blogosphere, and next week there's gonna be a no-confidence vote. Even the prime minister has chimed in.

  10. i'm a singaporean, i'm really disgusted at what these fundies are doing in my country. as if it wasn't enough that they were spreading hate against gays, now they have to hijack a secular progressive organization in order to do that. utterly despicable of them.

  11. Marc, many many Singaporeans are standing up against the police state. There are many gay bloggers that the government is keeping track of; Fridae.com, arguably the most influential gay personals website, is made mostly for Singaporeans; then there is trevvy.com; Singapore gay pride has been going on for years; many gay Singapore films are out. Just because there isn't a Stonewall major revolution doesn't mean that Singaporeans are not fighting back. They're fighting all the time - strategically. Look at it this way, if you're put behind bars, you can't fight right?

  12. Is it not pungent with irony that a group dedicated to the promotion of equal rights for women should implicitly advocate social discrimination against another group? One would expect that individuals who undoubtedly appreciate the historical struggles women had to endure to free themselves of their societal shackles also appreciate a similar, contemporary struggle for social acceptance. Have the oppressed become the oppressors?

But I understand for these individuals, it is a matter of morality. Their interpretation of their religion dictates that an innate sexual condition is grounds for opprobrium. They might perhaps consider that even today in certain societies, their counterparts continue to face unrelenting and imaginable prejudice, also because of an innate sexual condition - that of merely being a woman. Those who oppress them do so under the banner of perceived morality as well. Stories of how women are treated in some countries by the “morality police” shock the conscience of women and men, straight and gay alike. Is it really moral or the fruit of a religion whose early members were themselves persecuted as ideological deviants to discriminate against people who are different?

Ultimately, this is not just a battle between pro- and anti-homosexual factions. It is but one front in the larger war against discrimination of all kinds. But just as the tide of history turned in favour of women in Singapore, so too will it eventually turn in favour of other groups. As for the new leadership at Aware, they must now struggle to keep their heads above the choppy waters of irony.

  13. Hello,

    I really enjoy your blog.

I'm conducting feminist research on how American foreign policy affects popular support for terrorism. I’m particularly interested in incorporating the views of women, non-whites, and people living outside of America and Western Europe, but all responses are invited and welcome. The survey can be accessed at

I would really value your opinion and the opinion of your readers.

    Thank you,

    John Maszka

  14. just to let you guys know: the aware saga in singapore has ended on a happy note! after members moved to hold an extraordinary general meeting to hold a vote of no confidence against the usurping exco they were resoundingly rejected by 1414 votes to 762, and have resigned from their positions. a new exco from the old guard at aware has been voted in. all's well that ends well!

  15. [It's still legal - and always God-honoring - to air messages like the following. (See Ezekiel 3:18-19.) In light of government backing of raunchy behavior (such offenders were even executed in early America!), maybe the separation we really need is the "separation of raunch and state"!]

In Luke 17 in the New Testament, Jesus said that one of the big "signs" that will happen shortly before His return to earth as Judge will be a repeat of the "days of Lot" (see Genesis 19 for details). So gays are actually helping to fulfill this same worldwide "sign" (and making the Bible even more believable!) and thus hurrying up the return of the Judge! They are accomplishing what many preachers haven't accomplished! Gays couldn't have accomplished this by just coming out of closets into bedrooms. Instead, they invented new architecture - you know, closets opening on to Main Streets where little kids would be able to watch naked men having sex with each other at festivals in places like San Francisco (where their underground saint - San Andreas - may soon get a big jolt out of what's going on over his head!). Thanks, gays, for figuring out how to bring back our resurrected Saviour even quicker!
