Marion Barry Declares Himself 'Moral Leader' at Anti-Gay D.C. Protest

Jackson

Yesterday I mentioned Reverend Harry Jackson's protest against marriage equality in Washington D.C.:

Barry "The Stand Up for Marriage rally was held across the street from the John A. Wilson Building, the seat of city government...'I would rather be religiously courageous than politically correct,' Jackson said. 'I am thankful that God has put it in your heart to be here. You represent a hundredfold and others that should and would and wanted to be here. I am appointing you to take the word far and wide and speak up for Jesus.' The ministers contend that the city's elected officials are pushing legislation that most District residents oppose."

AFTER THE JUMP, watch Washington Blade video of Jackson, as well as  D.C. Council member and former mayor Marion Barry (via Right Wing Watch). Barry, the four-time married ex-con, tax-evading crack addict, declared himself a "moral leader."

  1. If you look up "irony" in the dictionary there's a picture of these folks demonstrating against civil rights.

  3. An angle you miss is how many of these people actually live and pay taxes in DC? A quick way to piss-off DC residents is have a bunch of suburbanites try to meddle in district affairs. "WTF! You people don't live here, go home!"

  4. rather be religious right.....WAIT, the bible speaks of blacks being slaves and unpurity....SHOULD WE follow that too? I don't think so...these jackson pig of trash....should get a life.....but i'm sure his message will reach a few haters first.

  7. I love how black people think its ok to discriminate and protest against gay people or any other group for that matter. For a minority that has dealt with racism and discrimination for many years black people sure do express alot of hatred for gay people.Makes me sick.I wonder how many of them black men are getting their cock sucked by another "brotha" on the DL.

  8. Washington, DC is an overwhelmingly blue district, but sometimes party lines and liberalism just don't extend back into equal rights.

DC is also, as many people know, a pretty darn gay friendly city... when you stick to the gentrified parts. What happens when you leave the shiny and new?

Well, its "fags" by name and thrown rocks by action. I've had rocks thrown at me, and it wasn't an isolated incident. It doesn't make me feel "less safe," but it does highlight (in a most disenheartening way) a very real group of people. Unfortunately for us and our cause, Barry is a *perfect* representative for those folks. And the folks are there in numbers (though I suspect even his fans are hard pressed to call him a "moral leader").

He was re-elected for a reason: He speaks to a very real, very broad audience.

Its a shame that "broad" audience isn't also broad-minded.

  10. Marion Barry is a joke that DC's socio-economically challenged population loves to follow. He speaks to their ignorance, fear and prejudice.

Sadly, these same religious fence straddlers in this video look to get their cocks sucked in LBJ Park on Saturday before attending church services on Sunday.

America's "moral compass" has a magnet stuck to the bottom of it.

  11. That article was the best laugh of the day!
A crackhead telling others about being a moral leader.

you can't make this stuff up!

  12. Not that it matters to most on this blog, but what COLOR are the elected officials in DC who are supporting gay marriage rights...the ones those "religious" blacks above are chastising? What COLOR is pro-gay rights Mayor Fenty? Those kind don't matter, do they?

    BOSIE,

you got any message for the anti-gay Iowa couple who blame the "gay lifestyle" for their son's death? No, they're white so you have no special insults for them.

Seriously! Honestly the myopia that runs rampant through these comments would be hilarious if it wasn't so dangerous/predictable.

  16. I think Dorothy Parker said it best: "Heterosexuality is not normal, it's just common".

And these people are as common as they get.

  17. I agree completely with what John S and Paul says, actually.

And where are the black gay people in DC to shoot down this crackhead? Lord knows there are enough of them (having been one 20 years ago). LOL

    Jesse, don't be a racist

  18. @ Derrick and Giovanni

As much has been written about the WHITE witch in Minnesota who has espoused hatred and bigotry, so this is not a racial thing. However, the images above show only African Americans and Marion Barry is NOT a person who should be throwing stones.

  19. God must be laughing his ass off at ALL of us.

I can think of no other reason for all this stupidity other than the 'Big Guy up in the Sky' needs a good laugh, or maybe his Wii is broken.

  20. "I mean to counter Barry's arguments and to highlight his hypocrisy, folks. Just took a look at what I said."

    Whoops!

Posted by: Chitown Kev | Apr 29, 2009 12:54:27 PM

  21. RIC,

the tone of the comments do ALWAYS become a "racial thing" here. The poster, ED, spoke of "irony"--and that was perfectly appropriate: black civil rights leaders wanting to deny civil rights to gay people. Ed's comment was correct and un-offensive to black gay people.

But when white gays begin to use age-old racist language and age-old racial slurs to counter black homophobia then you will have black gays repond to your racism. You leave us no choice but to make counter insults.

As angry as we black gays are about ignorant black homophobes--we are never going to side with racist white gays who obviously held a dislike for black people long before black homophobia became an issue. Those white gays don't like black gays any more than they like black homophobes, and, dammit, we don't like them.

Sometimes "political correctness" is necessary in the gay world (which includes so many different races, ethnic groups, religions).

A few months ago, Andy did a story about a Manhattan baker who made cookies with racist images on them. He called them "Obama cookes" and "Nigger cookies". The Manhattan baker was of Greek ancestry. I started to post a bigoted remark about Greeks and Greek-Americans here on Towleroad, but I stopped myself. I didn't think it right to offend gays of Greek ancestry because of what that bigoted baker did.

Too many white gays are too eager and too happy to complain about homophobic blacks by using the ugliest racial slurs--not giving a damn what affects their nasty tongues have on black gay people.

    I even changed it twice.

  23. Once again, the pro-gay is asleep. Where are the pro-gay rallies, demonstrations? The anti-gay side is organized, energized, and public, whereas the pro-gay side is posting snide comments on the internet.

  24. Kev

Shut the hell up.It aint racist its the truth.Or do you not listen to black people confronting and outing DL black men.By the way

How can I be a racist when Im black myself?

Im confronting the truth bitches. The only racist people here are the holier than thou self-righteous White gay men who have ONLY pointed the finger at black people during the prop 8 propaganda. Its so easy to call a person a racist and totally deny the fact that you are one yourself.

Some of you people on this blog really need to shut the fuck up and get off your high horse.A reality check is in order for the many of you.

    Posted by: Jesse | Apr 29, 2009 1:15:47 PM

  25. @Derrick

    Exactly.

Now some may interpret John S. "socio-economically challenged" comment as being covertly racist and maybe it is to some extent but I am not one to talk about that. I dropped a "dumb ghetto" bomb in a thread (without regret) on another site yesterday and I will probably drop a few more when all is said and done. I'll drop a redneck cunt bomb in a minute.

Not all black people think the same way and not all white people think the same way.
