New Hampshire Senate Holds Hearings on Same-Sex Marriage Bill

The New Hampshire Senate Judiciary Committee is holding hearings today on the same-sex marriage bill which passed the House by a vote of 186-179 on March 26.

Nh FOX 44 reports that "dueling demonstrations" greeted lawmakers as they arrived this morning: "Emotions ran high as the philosophical debate created some face-to-face confrontations. Several hundred people against gay marriage and a smaller number supporting it gathered in separate groups on the Statehouse plaza, mixing briefly as they headed into the building for a Senate committee hearing on whether New Hampshire should be the fifth state to allow gay marriage. As they mixed, some from the pro-gay marriage group shouted 'Love means everyone,' prompting others to counter: 'Support traditional marriage.'"

As always, the battle is uphill: "Several senators in the Democrat-controlled legislature contacted by Reuters speculated the bill would face defeat, citing Democratic Governor John Lynch's opposition, or be tabled indefinitely so lawmakers can avoid taking a stance on the issue ahead of elections next year."

Openly gay Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson is expected to testify at the hearings.

Repulsive. I would expect this from the GOP, but this is ridiculous...

  3. Check out "Erosgodofgays" on YouTube......we have had enough fundamentalist bigotry. It must be named clearly: Ratzinger is a bigot. Sharia law is codified bigotry. Hanging teenagers because they are gay is a hate crime. Torturing gays is a hate crime.

Look at the videos posted by "Eros God of Gays" and I dare you not to be moved and enraged. We have to pressurize governments not only to get equal rights of civil marriage laws but also to take up the clarion fight against fundamentalist torture of gays.

  5. "...ahead of elections next year."

Elections occur EVERY two years, you assholes, so when the fuck do you think you'll be able to get around to doing your jobs?

  6. "Several hundred people against gay marriage and a smaller number supporting it gathered in separate groups on the Statehouse plaza,"

WTF?? Equality NH has had weeks and weeks to prepare and STILL the haters' numbers were bigger than ours? what is UP with that??

I think this notion that it is okay to not take a vote on a bill because it will go down to defeat is bullsh*t.

We want to know exactly who is voting for and who is voting against marriage equality and will support the people who are voting for with hard campaign cash!

  7. Once again the progressives are punked down by the rightwing. We should have had 2,000+ same-sex marriage supporters bused in from all over New England. We have had time to galvanize and organize, yet this is all we can muster? Where are all the progressives and gays from neighboring NH and MA? Sure, it's best to have NH residents organized, but I am sure many of the anti-gay crowd is not from NH either. We have had ample time to get ready for the NH Senate vote, yet we seem to be totally outorganized again. Pathetic.
