Sweden to Allow Same-Sex Couples to Marry

After six hours of debate the Swedish parliament voted today to adopt a gender-neutral marriage law, allowing same-sex couples in the country to marry:

Swedish-parliament "Only the Christian Democrats, one of the four parties in the ruling centre-right coalition, opposed the move. Yvonne Andersson said her party wanted to maintain 'a several hundred-year-old concept' about marriage. Supporters of the gender-neutral legislation included Evon Frid of the Left Party who said it was 'not a negative change, but a positive change.' The proposal was approved by a 261 to 22 vote, with 16 abstentions. The new legislation is to take effect as of May 1, and replaces the legislation approved in 1995 that allows same-sex couples to form a union in Sweden via registered partnership."

Sweden now joins the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, and parts of the United States in allowing its gay and lesbian citizens to marry.

  2. The hypocrisy of the U.S. to the idea of equality for all its citizen becomes glaring as more and more countries around the globe outshines it by recognizing that their LGBT citizens should be treated with dignity and equality.

  4. 261 to 22

Its sad, but I can't imagine living in a place where equality of gays and lesbians is such an obvious nonissue. Congrats to Sweden for being awesome.

  9. I love the comment by Yvonne Andersson, who said "...her party wanted to maintain 'a several hundred-year-old concept' about marriage". Didn't she realize walking upright broke thousands of years of a knuckle-dragging concept; or being a woman in politics broke the 'concept' of hundreds of years of male dominated politics? What low intellectuality these people have--they should be ashamed of their stupidity--if only they had the 'concept' of their stupidity.

  17. I believe there is or has been legislation in several South American countries that are favorable to this idea. Uraguay and Colombia come to mind
