Michael Savage, Fred and Shirley Phelps Banned from UK Over Hate

The UK Home Office has published a list of individuals banned from entering the UK since October:

Savage "Jacqui Smith, the home secretary, said she decided to make public the names of 16 people banned since October for fostering extremism so others could better understand the behaviour Britain was not prepared to tolerate.

Smith told GMTV: 'I think it's important that people understand the sorts of values and sorts of standards that we have here, the fact that it's a privilege to come and the sort of things that mean you won't be welcome in this country.'"

Among them are Westboro Baptist Church's Fred Phelps and Shirley Phelps-Roper: "Pastor and leading spokesperson of Westboro baptist church. Considered
to be engaging in unacceptable behaviour by fostering hatred which
might lead to inter-community violence in the United Kingdom."

Also banned is radio host Michael Savage: "Controversial daily radio host. Considered to be engaging in
unacceptable behaviour by seeking to provoke others to serious criminal
acts and fostering hatred which might lead to inter-community violence."

this is outrages to put an american patriot like michael savage on the same level with muslim extremists who kill people, michael savage has never touched a fly on the wall, he is just talking the truth from his heart.

london, why are you so afraid of michael savage? because he may expose you for the world that you are not the london of the past because you lost your way. instead of taking on the real challenge to battle your enemies within, the muslim extremists who are terrorising jews & christans on daily basis & will in a few years take over your country, you have picked the wrong fight’ we are all behind michael savage & we will not travel to the uk untill michael savage is taken off that list http://twitter.com/savage_limbaugh

I don’t agree with Savage being banned.

However, if he must be banned it should be for the right reason. Despite Savage painting himself as a champion of free speech, he is anything but. He took the organisation CAIR to court to prevent them from using snippets of his show on their website. Had Savage prevailed, free speech would have lessened for us all. See:

And yet they let the Muslim extremists preach hate openly in the streets? Britain is turning into a cesspool where I think the Phelps family would fit in just fine.

  4. zeddy says

Did anyone saying this is overboard actually look at who else is on the list? Extremism is extremism whether you are christian or muslim. Though the UK is beyond help…they should be more worried about the trash that is already there.

  5. woodroad34 says

There is a limit to free speech. And when you advocate hate and stir people to violence, you’re right to free speech ends where my life and well-being begins. Michael Savage should be put in jail as far as I’m concerned and that goes for the Sarah Palin supporters that advocate killing Obama and Carrie Prejean who objects to people speaking their minds about her while she feels free to denigrate gays. These people are selfish and sociopathic. They have no boundaries of civility or courtesy.

  6. says

Michael Weiner Savage needs to sue the home secretary for her double standard. I want conservative extremists and muslim extremists both banned from the UK. If she cant ban muslim extremists from the UK then she shouldnt have a right to ban Phelps or Weiner.

  7. Jason Young says

There should be no (or virtually no) limits to free speech. To put limits on it is to endanger us all. I’d rather know who hates me than have it fester underground. It is always better to err on the side of more freedom than less. The fact that you can legally say whatever you want in this country is what differentiates us from every other country in the world. If you don’t like what some one else says respond back. If you don’t feel safe doing so at that moment bite your tongue and respond later.

I have no intention of falling down the slippery slope. Who cares what Fred Phelps thinks? He helps our cause more than he hurts it anyway. If you’re worried about violence against you get a concealed carry permit.

  8. Rowan says

What?? Why does he want to come here anyways? We’re nothing like you guys!

We have our very own style of hate which is the Daily Mail! It’s passive aggresive but it’s English..

  9. anon says

Their standard seems to be capricious and arbitrary, which is always fun, fun, fun! At the very least they should not ban people who are stating things people already in the country are saying! Doesn’t anyone read 1984 anymore?

  10. Luke says

London Gay guy here. Our Home Secretary has banned just 22 people from entering Britain out of millions of people. We too are a free country with freedom of speech.

UK Border Control receives intel from American CIA and FBI. They have banned Michael Savage based on US intel.

I know Michael Savage as a misogynistic hateful bigoted homophobic scumbag who floods your airwaves with intolerant messages of hate. Perhaps Americans have become numb to such vileness,… or perhaps your government has told my government information about Savage that we are not privy too.

  11. paul c says

@Luke – It’s the people who keep their views quiet and to themselves that you need to watch out for.

Savage is a cartoon character compared to the people who have already invaded your country.

  12. Darrien says

Just for the record, the UK has banned Muslim, Christian and Jewish extremists. And as for Michael Savage, well, I doubt one whit of freedom of speech or thought in Britain will be disturbed by his absence. And if that leads to a boycott of Britain by Savage supporters, I guess the price the UK will pay is having a higher IQ, sweeter air and less obnoxious behaviour than if they did wash up on our shores. A steep price to pay…

  13. Gregus says

    @ paul c

You seem to have a particular hate of the UK for some reason. Not sure why.

There are many names on no-fly lists in the US, you just don’t know about them. To my knowledge there’s no published list like this. Seems open and honest of the UK to publish this.

Also sad to say, apparently HIV+ people STILL can’t even enter the US, despite a supposed change in this law.

HIV+ people are treated with dignity when entering the UK, and gay UK citizens can bring their foreign partners into the country.

  14. paul c says

@Gregus – I don’t have a hatred for the UK at all. I feel anger and sadness for what the UK is becoming — namely a crime-ridden, grotesque, third-world welfare society monitored and controlled by a big brother type government. With bad teeth.

  15. Coemgen in the UK says

“we are all behind michael savage & we will not travel to the uk untill michael savage is taken off that list ” …. thank goodness for that.

Why do the right-wing US freaks absolutely obsess about Muslims running Britain? Do their mind control “pastors” talk of nothing else? At least we talk to Muslim people here, don’t just bomb them at weddings.

And the teeth thing? Again ? Ye gods, why worry about teeth when your health “service ” is well known to be the most un-economic rip-off in the world !

Good fun to read the site though !

  16. Jim says

This is really gutsy on the part of the UK. You go Brits! Although I DO support the right to free speech, even if it is a view that I disagree with, I suppose a line must be drawn when that speech can incite hatred, violence, and the destruction of individuals and the degradation of a group of individuals. Learn the lesson America: free speech goes too far when it incites and inspires hatred and violence.

  17. paul c says

@Gregus – Hilarious but sad that the “crime-ridden, grotesque, third-world welfare society monitored and controlled by a big brother type government” segment of my comment either didn’t rile you…but OH BOY…BAD TEETH! Them’s fightin’ words!!

I have family in the UK and I’m all too well aware of what goes on there and it’s as depressing as hell. Your country is devolving. You ought to look at Canada and then copy every single thing they do, because you folks are sinking fast.

  18. Gregus says

    @ Paul C
Just find it tragic when people resort to the ‘bad teeth’ jibe at the UK, it’s kind of like the ‘all Americans are fat’ bullshit that other countries pull. You’re also mistaken…it’s not my country. I just think we can have a discussion without resorting to the crappy stereotypes within 5 seconds flat.

  19. says

The Phelps Klan are banned from entering with their hate-signs, too. Why? Canada has very specific, explicit and discernible laws about hate-speech.
And before someone who doesnt’ live there screams “That’s not freedom of speech!” understand this: it’s been in place for twenty years. And it works.

How? Simple. it’s a discerning process, weighing what is said, why it’s being said, the value of the ramifications toward those who are targeted by that speech.

To make it simple: Canada’s government understands that the specific harm promoted by the Phelps family is of more concern that their “right” to spread it. Stifling their freedom of speech? No, understanding that their right to speak specifically comes at the expense of the safety and well-being of others.

    Thank you, Canada.

We don’t allow tobacco companies and alcohol companies to advertise to minors. We shouldn’t allow hatred to be marketed, either.
