David Beckham in Scuffle with Crowd as U.S. Fans Turn Sour

Beckham

David Beckham nearly got physical with a "fan" after returning to L.A. for a friendly match against AC Milan. Signs reading "fraud" and "go home" greeted Becks, who hadn't played in the city for five months.

At halftime, Beckham approached the stands and gestured at one man who jumped down before being hauled away by security.

Beckham responded to the angry fans to news reporters following the game.

  2. Well, that's the last time THAT Brownie troop goes to a soccer match!

  3. I'm about half-way through that new Beckham book about his failure to ignite soccer in America. It's not a pretty picture. A little piece of me is now dead inside.

  4. BeckHAM is such a tool!

Yeah, that's a real tough man who signals someone to come down from the stands for a confrontation when he knows he has the security detail all around him.

Not to mention someone at his level should be more professional than that!

  5. I'm writing to my congress critters to demand a law be passed mandating the immediate execution of any sports player who uses the phrase "at the end of the day" in post game roundup interviews.

I hope all you will do the same.

  7. Crispy: I'm glad to hear you have an interest in soccer enough to read "The Beckham Experiment." It gives me hope as I was about to express my hope that more gay people would get into sports.

(Though I still hope that would be the case. Too many gay men turn off sports because it's just "too" hetero for them. Not cool.)

In any event, as a proud and out gay man and a proud and out Galaxy (and US MNT) fan, I was never under the pretense that Beckham would bring about a cultural shift in American sports. What I was under the imrpession is that Beckham would make the Galaxy a dominant domestic team and a regional powerhouse.

Neither of those happened. If anything, the Galaxy fell backward because of the meddling of Beckham -- or more accurately, his people. I resent the fact that my club, the 2005 MLS Cup winners, hasn't visited the playoffs since, all but one of those years during Beckham's presence.

I'm glad the Galaxy fans didn't roll over simply because Beckham returned. He burned some bridges when he didn't return on his original timetable and I'm glad there was a visible and vocal reminder waiting for him. Remember, these were the same people who were in love with him just seven months ago, even at a time when the Galaxy once again missed playoffs.

Beckham needs to be forced to rebuild those bridges by the sweat of his brow and the humility of his actions and words. We have a sneaky feeling he won't be back next year, so the fans (and the team?) are over him... but that doesn't mean we don't need everything out of him right during this season.

Towleroad... thanks for posting this. Dunno why you did, but I'm glad.

  8. Hiya Tommy!
Good to have someone to talk footie with!

Towleroad typically posts something about Beckham every week (usually his latest undies ad). Honestly, I'm always surprised at how much attention he gets around here (and Ronaldo too, YUCK!)... there are so many other soccer stars here in the States that might interest the gays, although I guess few are seen in their underwear quite as often. (Note to Andy: Google Juan Pablo Angel some day. You'll be glad you did.)

My boyfriend has a bizarre thing for Landycakes. I just ain't seeing it.

Anyways, I don't live in LA, but it is the closest city with an MLS team. So they're my favorite. Sadly, their abysmal record and the whole Beckham drama has just about turned me against the Galaxy for good. So right now, I'm all about the Sounders. And the Men's National team goes without saying. World Cup 2010, go Yanks!

  9. Crispy!

Juan Pablo Angel is a cutie from certain angles. But I agree with your boyfriend about Landycakes. He's got above-average looks, with him getting a little more attractive the older he gets (it's something about his receding hairline - don't ask!) But I guess what really turns me on to him is his attitude. He's so genuine it's just sexy!

You can also give me Spector, Bornstein, Feilhaber and Holden (who's rumors of being gay I hope are true, hehe) and I wouldn't say 'no.'

I don't live in LA either, but OC is close enough. I've been attending games since I was old enough to drive to them, back when the Rose Bowl was their home.

Keep the faith in the Galaxy. If Beckham doesn't derail them with infighting, they'll make the playoffs this year. Their defense is in place (AJ De La Garza is a cutie, too!), Ricketts is their brick wall in the pipes and Donovan's tearing it up. They're going places.

And it's great to find another gay football fan! :-)

  10. People are sick of this douchebag diva and his pin-thin wife too. These CHAVS needs to head back to the UK - pronto

    Posted by: Shane | Jul 20, 2009 5:38:04 PM

  11. No please keep them - we are sick of all things Beckham in the UK. Celebz who tell us they are "Gay Icons" so aren't.

Marc, I so agree with the "at the end of the day" thing. When will that day end? To the list I would also add the other Beckham standard vocabulary, "Um" and "You Know".
