Marion Barry, Moral Politician, Arrested for Stalking
Former DC Mayor and current Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry, 73, was arrested over the weekend for misdemeanor stalking. He is accused of following a 40-year-old "female acquaintance" who he had been assisting financially. How someone currently on probation for federal tax evasion has bucks to spare is beyond me.
Barry has proclaimed his innocence.
Recently, Barry was one of Washington DC's loudest and angriest voices in opposition of marriage equality, saying, "I am a politician who's moral." Not so recently (1990), he was caught on video smoking crack, leading to his career-defining quote, "The bitch set me up."
Might the same line be recycled soon in reference to the latest in his long line of legal disasters?

He also consistently fails to pay his taxes. "Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s" (Matthew 22:21).

I wonder what made him turn anti-gay?
I lived in DC when he first ran for Mayor. He upset Mayor Washington to first take that office primarily by courting the gay vote. He always attended Gay Pride when it was held at P St. Beach. He even carried his infant son with him as he mingled with the crowd.
Somewhere there's a story behind his change of heart. I wonder what it is...

He didn't turn antigay; he just continued to be the political opportunist he's always been. When he calculated that he could get more votes from black religious voters than from white gay ones, he changed tactics. Back when he was supportive of gay causes, he was among the few DC politicians to do so and DC didn't elect anything but African-American politicians. Now the landscape has changed.
That said, this case seems like a crock. He had lunch with the woman the same day he was accused of stalking her, she says they see each other every day, and she says he wasn't stalking her. I don't respect the man, but that doesn't mean he isn't being accused on some trumped up charges. Obviously a LOT of people in DC dislike him, often for extremely valid reasons. He should have disappeared from the public eye ages ago.
The woman is nearly half his age, but plenty of people are turned on by power, or celebrity, or the appearance of one or the other.
