Andre Agassi: I Wore a Wig in 1990 French Open Final

Agassi

There's more shock in Andre Agassi's autobiography than the confession he used crystal meth. Agassi says he wore a wig because he was distressed that he was losing his hair. He feared it would come off when he was wearing it at the French Open final:

"'Every morning I would get up and find another piece of my identity on the pillow, in the wash basin, down the plughole,' he writes. But after the wig fell apart in the shower the night before the Paris final, his brother helped him clamp it together using about 20 clips. Agassi writes: 'Of course I could have played without my hairpiece, but what would all the journalists have written if they knew that all the time I was really wearing a wig? During the warming-up training before play I prayed. Not for victory, but that my hairpiece would not fall off. With each leap, I imagine it falling into the sand. I imagine millions of spectators move closer to their TV sets, their eyes widening and, in dozens of dialects and languages, ask how Andre Agassi's hair has fallen from his head.'"

Scenes from that final, at which Andres Gomez defeated Agassi, AFTER THE JUMP...

  1. Hey, why are there ads for Bob McDonnell all over this site? He's the republican candidate for governor of Virginia, and he's certainly no friend to the people who frequent this blog.

  2. Another autobiography penned by a paid writer.. If that wasn't flourishing wordsmithing and laying it on thick, I don't know what is.

"Every morning I would get up and find another piece of my identity on the pillow, in the wash basin, down the plughole..."

Give me a break. I just threw up in my mouth.

  3. As a follicly challenged person myself, I sympathize.

  4. Lame.

Come on .... just get a short haircut and shave the rest.

How sad for him to be a SUPERSTAR and only care about his hair.

If you watch that clip his is holding his head up as he misses the last jump.

Obviously unable to play to his best because he was wearing an ill fitting wig.

Of course Meth produces paranoia and bad judgement --- so I think we can add the wig issue to the Meth issue.

Glad he grew up and just shaved his head!

  5. Sorry, but that's funny. Vanity in overdrive.

Did it occur to him to simply say he'd gotten a haircut instead of having huge hair? Such hair doesn't really suit an athlete anyway.

  6. In the words of Andre himself, image is everything.

  7. "But after the wig fell apart in the shower the night before the Paris final..."

Why was he wearing it in the shower?

  12. I bet he's glad the embrace-your-baldness, shaved head look is sexy and here to stay. Obviously in the 80's that wasn't the case, which led to very very many bad hair choices, this one included. Image was everything, and in a decade where reinvention wasn't as popular, and in which the range of fashionable hairstyles was more narrow and limiting (not to mention HIGH MAINTENANCE), this is a sad yet hilarious vignette. Poorly written though, gross.

  13. The funny thing is, he looks much better with a shaved head than he ever did with that weird mullet. Too bad it took him so long to realize it and too bad he put so much stock in his hair in the first place.

  14. NUFLUX

I take that to mean that it wasn't a wig wig but rather 1 of those that are screwed onto the head for a more permanent wind resistant thing.

They slice open your scalp and insert metal screws into the skull...the screws are used to attach a more permanent fake hair piece than a wig wig.

I learned that thanks to BONES. 1 night watching BONES (best show on TV) they had a dead guy who had screws in his skull and mentioned it was for a hair pieice so out of shock I googled it and yeah people really get that shit done

Anyway; that would explain why he was wearing the piece in the shower....it was screwed to his skull

  15. It may also have been a weave rather then a wig, which would explain how it was falling out/off (as his real hair fell out, the weave would have less holding it on.)
Andre Aggasi was the first bald man I ever found sexy, and before him I had never considered bald sexy. It's amazing how far we go and the things we do because of fear.
