Fresno College Professor Relies on Bible to Teach Biology, Says That Homosexuality is a Disease

The ACLU has sent a letter to Fresno City College following complaints about a professor who relies on the Bible to teach biology, "demanding that the school ensure that all its health science classes teach unbiased and medically accurate information" and urging the school to mandate unbiased health information.

One student told Fresno station KSFN: "He started out asking was Jesus haploid or diploid, a biological term and he directed us to go to the bible for proof and write a paper on it." Another said, "I was very upset about the homosexuality part to think that this man would be telling me that my gay and lesbian friends which I have quite a few of are ruining the world, are degrading society."

According to the ACLU, in recent lectures, Professor Lopez:

  • Presented a slide listing “homosexual facts,” including that homosexuality is a “biological misapplication of human sexuality” and said that the “recommended treatment” is “psychological counseling” or “hormone supplements.”
  • Presented LGBT people as a burden on and/or threat to society, claiming, for example, that anything but a heterosexual union provides a “one-sided foundation for raising children.”
  • Presented bible passages as “empirical” evidence that life begins at conception in support of his assertion that abortion is murder and “the leading cause of death in this country” (because there are over a million abortions a year).
  • Followed a slide on climate change in a presentation on “environmental health” with a slide containing a Biblical quote about the world ending in fire, and said “that is the real global warming we should be worried about.”
  • Repeatedly referenced the Bible and used it as a teaching tool, for example assigning as homework a question as to Jesus’ genetic makeup.

  1. forget about the homophobic comments--this college should lose its accreditadtion for allowing this idiot to teach using the Bible as a source of empirical scientific data.

Im a little concerned at how this is being framed as a "controversy." That suggests there are two valid sides. And why is the ALCU representative being so timid

  2. How the hell did that crock get there in the first place?

I hope the students boycott his classes

  3. I agree with Dizzy. What is the controversy? This man should be fired immediately. He is an insult to educators the world over.

  4. Why don't these supernaturalists teach at Oral Roberts or Liberty University or other
"bible" colleges. They would have a captive audience.

  5. Why isn't there more outcry over this "Christian Agenda"? They'll be recruiting our kids soon

  6. Sounds like someone was just granted tenure recently. :-)

  7. Was Jesus haploid or diploid? Seriously? That simply beyond irrelevant. He needs fired because he's confusing topics, reducing the efficacy of his pedagogy. The department chair who wasn't stopping this before it got to the press needs severely punished, as he/she clearly knew of the abuses.

  8. Where and who do we write to?

Please someone PLEASE provide a contact link for the school and administrators and please take 2 minutes of your day to write them. It WILL make a difference.

College campuses are an entity in place to inform and educate not isolate a percentage of the student body with hate speech!

  9. 1) Why would any sane student not drop the class and file a complaint ?

    2) Why would a state college allow this?

    3) We know sadly all understand how what happened in Germany in the 1940's happened .... humans just like us acted just like the Christianists in American in 2010.

    Be afraid.
    Know fear.

  10. Hey Blake---why don't you take 2 minutes and go online to the school's website and copy and paste the contact info here?

  11. Looks like someone is seeking his 15 minutes...

If they don't fire him, then they should remove the administrators.

The student pop will probably remain silent; Fresno is almost the equivalent of Mississippi. All of CA is not golden.

  12. We should all be very afraid of this man and his group... there are tons of people just like him in schools all across the nation and they are growing!

  13. I'm not sure about Jesus, but this professor sure sounds like a "diploid." Emphasis on the "dip."

  14. @Blake. It’s called a search engine...

    This is the president’s email:

    Dr. Cynthia E. Azari

  15. The complete text of the ACLU letter is at

It is addressed to the college president, Dr. Cynthia E. Azari at:
    Fresno City College Administration
    1101 East University Avenue
    Freso, CA 93741

It is an excellent letter that gives more background information. I cannot believe that the school has had previous complaints and apparently done nothing.

  16. Unbelievable! WTF is wrong with the administrators of the college? How is it legal for this college to even get any state funding? If this guy doesn't stop pronto the ACLU better drag their asses into court.

  17. This is what happens when you let people get educated online.

  18. Hey hey hey! Fresno may be kind of backwards, but we are generally progressive, if that makes any sense. Its a rare case that you see people sneak in like this. If there is ever any religious teachings, its usually very blatant, not underhanded like this guy. We also have a huge population of gays and lesbians, including more gay clubs than San Jose and several different gay resource groups. And besides all that, I think it was last summer that Fresno had hosted the Meet in the Middle rally.

And I agree, people should take serious action on this professor. Some of these courses are required in order to graduate, and for people that are of other religions and faiths, this is clearly an attack on them, not just homosexuality. I'll make sure to post this and tell my friends about it.

  19. DIZZY SPINS: Coming from someone who has friends who have no other choice but to attend that school, I highly disagree with you on your stance that the school should lose its accreditation. I'm sorry, but 22,000 students (not to mention all the people who make a living working for the college) don't need to lose their school because one person decided to go mental.

  20. My mother went to that school briefly when I was a kid (she was trying to get her associates so she wouldn't have to be a telephone installer anymore). Luckily she never had any prof. like this.

Thank god she moved us out of that hell hole of a town. Everyone says California is so liberal, but those people never drove through the clenched sphincter that is Fresno.

I do find it very unusual that this outrageous wingnut Christianist states that homosexuality is "biological" in nature and not a "choice" as the majority of his ilk like to claim. However, it's the only thing interesting I read about this Scopes monkey trial-era educator.

  22. Fire the fucker.

Posted by: Robert In WeHo | Feb 10, 2010 1:25:40 PM

  23. Generally speaking, the ACLU normally supports free speech, so they should not have a horse in this one. If anything, they would normally defend a professor who gets in trouble spouting unfavorable comments. His main firing offense would either be incompetence or duty negligence, not teaching crabbed theology. He's the right wing version of Ward Churchill.

  24. The academy needs to reform the sacrosanct concept of tenure (do we know if this charlatan is tenured?) Also, this prof's department head is a gutless wonder.
