Senate Panel Tables Anti-Gay Marriage Bill in Pennsylvania, Effectively Killing It

A bill before the Pennsylvania Senate Judiciary Committee has stalled, the AP reports

Eichelberger  "The state Senate Judiciary Committee voted narrowly Tuesday to table the measure defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

The senators didn't utter a word of debate before or after gay-rights proponent Sen. Daylin Leach proposed to table the measure. The vote was 8-6.

Pennsylvania law already defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. But proponents of a constitutional amendment say a judge could overturn the law, even though Pennsylvania courts are not believed to be considering a challenge to that law.

The bill was sponsored by conservative Sen. John Eichelberger."

Keystone Progress writes: "This is a huge victory for us, since the vote effectively kills the bill.

This is your victory. We had over 120,000 emails sent to senators, over 75,000 in the last 24 hours! In addition, our allies and friends generated thousands more phone calls, emails and letters.

We should celebrate, but we need to remain vigilant. It is unlikely, but it is possible that the bill could come to life again. Especially if they think we aren't going to act again.

To all those visitors to this site who complain about how Dems never accomplish anything for us and who yearn for a return to the good old days of Republican rule, I note the following:

All six votes to advance the anti-gay amendment came from Republican senators while all five Democrats on the committee voted to kill it. This bill was defeated today because Democrats blocked it, as they have succeeded in doing in States like Minnesota, Illinois and West Virginia as well.

Reading comments in other parts of Towleroad, you’d think bigots like this only exist in Texas. Maybe Pennsylvania should secede from the Union because there are some idiots there too? After all, they sent Rick Santorum (Republican) to the United States Senate, one of the biggest homophobes and d’bags in recent memory.
