Obama Acknowledges Gay Moms in Mother’s Day Proclamation

The White House just issued the following to mark Mother's Day this weekend. See paragraph five:

FlowersBY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

Generations of mothers have labored tirelessly and selflessly to support and guide their children and families. Their loving, devoted efforts have broadened horizons for their children and opened doors of opportunity for our Nation's daughters and granddaughters. On Mother's Day, we pay tribute to these women who have given so much of themselves to lift up our children and shape America's character.

Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the words for the song The Battle Hymn of the Republic, led early efforts to establish a day honoring the influence of mothers on our lives and communities. In the ensuing decades, many Americans rallied to support this cause, including Anna Jarvis. After the loss of her own mother, Anna helped spur the nationwide institution of Mother's Day we celebrate each year.

From our first moments in this world and throughout our lives, our mothers protect us from harm, nurture our spirits, and encourage us to reach for our highest aspirations. Through their unwavering commitment, they have driven and inspired countless acts of leadership, compassion, and service across our country. Many mothers have struggled to raise children while pursuing their careers, or as single parents working to provide for their families. They have carried the torch of trailblazers past, leading by powerful example and overcoming obstacles so their sons and daughters could reach their fullest potential.

Whether adoptive, biological, or foster, mothers share an unbreakable bond with their children, and Americans of all ages and backgrounds owe them an immeasurable debt.

Nurturing families come in many forms, and children may be raised by two parents, a single mother, two mothers, a step-mom, a grandmother, or a guardian. Mother's Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate these extraordinary caretakers, mentors, and providers who have made us who we are. As we honor today's mothers, we also reflect upon the memory of those who have passed, and we renew our commitment to living the values they cultivated in us.

The Congress, by a joint resolution approved May 8, 1914 (38 Stat. 770), has designated the second Sunday in May each year as "Mother's Day" and requested the President to call for its appropriate observance.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 9, 2010, as Mother's Day. Let us express our deepest love and thanks to our mothers and remember those who, though no longer with us, inspire us still.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this seventh day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand ten, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth.

BARACK OBAMA

Let's hope that soon those "two mothers" will be seen equally in the eyes of the law.

OOH A CRUMB! A CRUMB! quick, jump on it before the dog eats it.

Of course, if pressed, Obama will probably clarify that he meant two moms in a “Kate & Allie” heterosexual kind of way.

  2. says

    Well, that’s ENOUGH FOR ME!

Fuck repealing DADT and DOMA; forget those homohating lawsuits defending them; forget the Fagroes that were kicked out of the military today; forget conspiring with Pentagon bigots to keep DADT on the books for years; forget passing ENDA and UAFA! Our Lord & Savior Obama Christ has again proven that Massa just luvin us is all we need.

I like to think of everything the way you learn in math. You dont learn trig in 1st grade, you learn small things along the way so you can become co.fortable, and eventually use it. Throw everything at a child and they’ll reject your math concepts.
People don’t accept something they’re unfamiliar with when thrown at them, especially out of they’re comfort zone. When the big O. introduces concepts that are nonsexual or threatening into what society currently deems normal, he’s introducing it to the public

  4. Gridlock says

Yes, Arthur. He’s introducing the utterly foreign concept of gay people to a previously undiscovered island tribe in the south pacific.

    Seriously?

The asshole is STILL DEFENDING the hideous DOMA and DADT in court, the things keeping you from being a full citizen.. at the same time as mouthing these platitudes that have, apparently, just bowled you right the fuck over.

The fierce urgency of “not too much, slow down, shhh not so loud, start small, it’s only been X number of years..”

    Vomit.

Oh and Marty: We don’t have a seat at the table because Obama and his cronies are fucking bigots. You know who got our spot at the table? McLurkin and Rev White. That oughta tell you pretty much everything.

  5. Gridlock says

Hey asshole: You might be satisfied with hot air from a bigot who is defending your status as a second class citizen but the rest of us aren’t.

    Fucking Obamabot cheerleading moron.

  6. says

Oh, Playgirl, I KNOW you’ve just been itching to throw the “racist” card again at anyone who dares criticize your Fantasy Husband, but, sorry, it’s called a “metaphor.” No problem. I understand there was only so much you could take with you when you shoved your head up his ass three years ago, and a book on grammar wasn’t one of them. Nor any on Ethics or another you REALLY need: “How to Avoid Being a Porch Fagroe.”

And allegedy Derek: check your mail. I got my rainbows and unicorn farts yesterday.

  7. Tranquilo, Amigas... says

Anger really is a hobby for some of you guys, eh? It’s a routine and innocuous Mother’s Day proclamation, for Chrissakes.

  8. Gridlock says

Funny how anger tends to crop up when you don’t have rights.

Doubly so when the asshole keeping you from them in court uses you in a speech to placate the easily satisfied.

  9. Jubal says

Rather than jump on the bandwagon of adversity, I just want to say that I miss my own Mom very much. She died the day after Mother’s day 1992 of ovarian cancer so I’ll use this moment to remind everyone here who has a mother, is a mother or wants to be a mother to remember to get tested regularly for breast, ovarian and cervical cancer. Especially once you’ve reached those years you might be most at risk.

  10. TANK says

“You dont learn trig in 1st grade, you learn small things along the way so you can become co.fortable, and eventually use it.”

Speak for yourself. Comfortable? pfft. You obviously didn’t grow up with an overzealous parent gifted in mathematics.

And Arthur, this isn’t like math. This is rights, and I don’t believe in your ease ’em into it mentality–relevant what? Thirty years ago? I am not about to curtail or soften any rhetoric to accomodate BIGOTED CUNTS!

  11. SkepticalCicada says

I’ll stop criticizing Obama’s empty words when you folks guzzling down his Kool Aid show me the signed Employment Non-Discrimination Act and the signed repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Your object of worship currently has his political team sabotaging both of those measures in Congress as we speak.

And the fact that a president is black does not make criticism of him racist. Indeed, the face that this president is black has clouded the judgment of some of his militant supporters. I no longer see a black president; I see a president throwing the gay community under the bus. And have no reluctance–as one who vigorously supported him–in saying so.

  12. MCnNYC says

But lets not forget that this blog was and has been a cheerleader for this fierce advocate for some time…This is an important moment for towleroad look they are doing CARTWHEELS to get the Obama bandwagon singing again…happy days are here again….

  13. Brian in Texas says

Haha; you guys are idiots, sorry. Yes we all want full equal rights, but going after Obama like this is just silly and wrong. The federal govt has to uphold the law. How would it be any different if gays had full marriage rights and rights to serve in the military and we had a conservative President who decided based on their own beliefs that we shouldn’t defend those laws protecting equal rights?

You guys do realize we have separation of powers?, right? You took junior high or high school social studies class, right? The congress needs to pass a law allowing gays to serve openly in the military. Congress needs to pass a law to get rid of DOMA. If they do that then the president will gladly sign it. The only other option is for someone to bring a lawsuit and a federal court overthrows the law based on unconstitutionality. You crazy, far left, politically naive people who know nothing about political realities or can accept the fact that progress and change come incrementally can go move to Cuba. That way you will have a dictator who can wave his magic dictator wand and have things the way you wish at his whim.

  14. TANK says

“How would it be any different if gays had full marriage rights and rights to serve in the military and we had a conservative President who decided based on their own beliefs that we shouldn’t defend those laws protecting equal rights?”

First of all, you’re about as intelligent as a turnip. I need to say that to somehow deal with the high magnitude of stupid your “reasoning” represents. Next, as there’s no real theme to your post other than a bunch of nonsequiturs loosely tied together by the meme that “obama can’t do nothin’, so why should he do anything?,” it’d be a lot like having bush as president, who cherry picked the constitution throughout his administration. And third, what does any of obama’s intentional sidetracking of lgbt equality have to do with ignoring equal rights? Nothing, asshole!

You stupid cunt…that shit may work with those flustered by the rhetoric of hannity and co, but not me. Brian=uncle ruckus in the house!

  15. Gridlock says

Oh Brian, you poor thick dullard. DOMA and DADT do NOT have to be defended in court. The Obama administration, like every administration before it, can simply choose not to defend any law passed by congress in court by refusing to defends its constitutionality. That’s it.

Every President before (and this one) has done so with court challenged laws it feels it does not want to bother upholding.

Obama thinks our apartheid status IS constitutionally valid, and has defended the status quo as a result.

THAT IS THE PROBLEM.. so enough with this “obama is a powerless figurehead/he has too much on his plate/he doesn’t have a magic wand/you are so impatient” schtick.

  16. SkepticalCicada says

Gee, Brian, I not only studied civics in middle school–which was apparently the last time you did–but I also worked as a staffer in Congress, so don’t condescend to me about understanding the legislative process, child.

The president is a crucial player in the enactment of legislation, and this president currently has his political team on Capitol Hill sabotaging DADT repeal and ENDA. He isn’t just sitting on the sidelines, he’s actively obstructing their passage.

    WOW…From Jimbo
He is still a lying jigger to me.

    POSTED BY: JIMBO | MAY 7, 2010 11:12:53 PM

Jigger HUH…jimbo bitch you know what you really wanted to say….

Thanks alot Ms KKKGay and also as a white gay speaking as such you call yourself a second class citizen. Well what do you consider us Beneath you???? Talking like that motherfucker you can’t hardly claim you like African Americans????

You know as a African American who does visit Towleroad. when folks present themselves in such ways I sometimes ask myself why do I visit here????

It’s obvious that no matter fucking what this man does it will never be accepted by many of you some because deep down inside you have a teabagger mentality, and or still hoping for Hillary to swing up and take everybody to a place they’re NOT going to get to anytime soon.

Do I like the that fact he isn’t moving on things quick enough? NO. But alot of these crazy and idiotic statements are like YUK and especially from Ms Michael MeatheadIstillsuckBillsdickandHillaryspussy@Matlunatic. If he lifted DADT today you’d find another angle of complaint to hold against him Ms Bedwell you never fucking supported him as many of you DID NOT.

There are still many things that plagues minorities until this day and we haven’t got our fair share neither. Things take time. Yeah he can issue a STOP ORDER on DADT. only for alot of you girls to then say well you’re too late Barack I’m voting for Mitt, or whomever only for the right wingnuts to win and then have the STOP ORDER done away with and guess what DADT is back law again.

    Second class citizen, Seriously!?!

Switch races and walk in our footsteps being Black and Gay and see how it feels not from The Black Community…But from The Gay Community and with comments as such you proved it spot on queen.

  18. Paul R says

Cripes. It’s a pro forma announcement that no one is ever going to read and that Obama likely never even read, and you all start attacking and name calling him and each other as though the man replaced the Constitution.
