South Korea in 'Crisis Status' After North Korean Shelling

Tensions are high on the Korean peninsula following shelling of areas of South Korea earlier today by North Korea:

"Two South Korean soldiers were killed, 15 were wounded and three civilians were injured, said Kiyheon Kwon, an official at the Defense Ministry. The South Korean military went to 'crisis status,' and fighter planes were put on alert but did not take off. South Korean artillery units returned fire after the North’s shells struck South Korea’s Yeonpyeong Island at 2:34 p.m., said Mr. Kwon, adding that the North also fired numerous rounds into the Yellow Sea. Television footage showed large plumes of black smoke spiraling from the island, and news reports said dozens of houses were on fire."

White House statement from Robert Gibbs

"Earlier today North Korea conducted an artillery attack against the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong. We are in close and continuing contact with our Korean allies. The United States strongly condemns this attack and calls on North Korea to halt its belligerent action and to fully abide by the terms of the Armistice Agreement. The United States is firmly committed to the defense of our ally, the Republic of Korea, and to the maintenance of regional peace and stability."

  1. I think I might have just won a bet on when and where WWIII is going to start.

  2. Funny enough I was just saying last night that there will be trouble there soon.

  3. Literally had a conversation two days ago with friends over where, if at all, WWIII would start - and it came down to either Iran or the North/South Korean border.

  4. The North isn't going to do shit. They're literally incapable of running even their half of Korea, let alone both on the extremely off chance they started a war and won. And the Chinese would be bullshit with them. BUT, China does like the fact this is causing problems for the U.S. We should not still be in Korea, period. South Korea doesn't need us to fight their wars and we should be firm with them on this. Ditto Japan. Let both Korea's finally sign some sort of peace treaty and the U.S. should get the hell out of there pronto. We're also still in Europe 65 years after the end of WW2, and are integral to European defense. Ridiculous! The Brits, French, Germans are quite capable of defending themselves and Europe. Enough Americans have died fighting in Europe and certainly American taxpayers should no longer be footing a huge disproportionate bill for European defense and NATO. NATO should really be called America and friends because our allies certainly don't pull the weight a wealthy super power like the EU can and should.
