Watch: Anti-Gay Extremist Scott Lively Opens Coffee Shop in Massachusetts, Sparking Concerns

Anti-gay extremist Scott Lively has opened a coffee shop in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Lively A City Councilor there is concerned that Lively, who has warned of a 'gay Nazi' takeover of the U.S. Military, and whose visits to Uganda (he claimed he delivered a "nuclear bomb against the gay agenda") to stoke homophobia were instrumental in planting the seed that eventually grew into the "kill the gays" bill, is using his business to spread his anti-gay views to local students and others who may not be aware of his past.

Lively was recently profiled in the Boston Globe and claimed he was toning down his anti-gay rhetoric, though the article seemed to suggest otherwise:

He says he has not changed his view that gays are “agents of America’s moral decline’’ but has refocused his approach to fit his flock in Springfield, which he said includes many homeless people, drug addicts, and alcoholics.

Lively continues to denounce homosexuality. Paul said that when he invited Lively to preach at his church earlier this year, Lively delivered an “old-time, hellfire message’’ condemning gays.

  2. i think a whole bunch of gay people should show up, order one cup of coffee, and then sit there all day

  3. There should be some kind of action against the new shop. Why not picket the place so that people will think twice about going into the place? Strangle the business...

  4. The evil is that people like this misuse and abuse the Bible, literally and very selectively, to spread hatred...contributing to an epidemic of gay youth homelessness and suicides. At it's core...the inacceptance, by this man and others, of the huge diversity which God has created (without mistakes)on this earth.

  5. This man is the poster boy of Gay bigotry, when I hear his name I shutter and also think of Phelps and his group. Keep an on him and his Uganda connection. He no laughing matter, he hates homosexuals and is obsessed with removing them from the earth.

  6. The local police and the FBI should stake this place out. It was clearly established as a magnet for Fundie terrorists.

  7. Lol. The difference between Muslim and Christian extremists is suicide bombing and convincing others to commit plain ol' regular suicide.

  8. The thing to do is clearly to have a big crowd of about 20 gay people go there, order coffee and pastry and sit there all day. If lively refuses to serve them, sue under Massachusetts' non discrimination law which covers public accommodations.

  9. Free coffee for high school students?? What's with all these religious wackos and high school kids? Just another pedophile here.

  10. Springfield beware of this man.

He belonged to a rabid antigay group know as the Oregon Citizen's Alliance (OCA) and that sponsored 4 different ballet measures in Oregon to discriminate against gay people. The first was in 1992 and was ballot measure 9. In part the measure said:

“ All governments in Oregon may not use their monies or properties to promote, encourage or facilitate homosexuality, pedophilia, sadism or masochism. All levels of government, including public education systems, must assist in setting a standard for Oregon's youth which recognizes that these behaviors are abnormal, wrong, unnatural and perverse and they are to be discouraged and avoided. ”

As for "free coffee", he's doing this so he can say it's a religious institution and therefore get tax breaks. The OCA did this a number of times in Oregon trying to shelter their money and hid it from the public eye.

He was not a "reverend" when he lived here and I would suspect this is just another part of a plan to wrap his operations in a tax exempt wrapper.

Bottom line, he was hateful and shady in 1992 and I don't see any change. Watch out!

  13. @ProudPortlander Could Lively be using the money from the tax breaks to live on? I bet alot of people like him are just doing this for the money. But I'm curious what your opinion is.

  14. They will just put a Starbucks next door and that will be the end of it. Freedom of speech has consequences of that choice of words and the intent behind them.

  16. Springfield is uber ghetto. He'll probably end up being robbed and shot.

  17. Ratbastard,

You clearly have race issues. Enough said!

  18. I don't think gays should give a cent to this man. And how would he even know they're gay unless they wear buttons or shirts proclaiming it? I'd watch his actions but ignore him and his store as much as possible. Any action against him and he'll be able to proclaim himself a misunderstood martyr, so I wouldn't spend money or time in his shop. I'd spread the word that he's evil.
