Westboro Baptist Church Responds to Takedown Threat from Hacker Group Anonymous: 'Bring It!'

This week, the hacker group Anonymous, which has successfully disabled sites associated to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak  as well as sites like Visa in the name of Wikleaks founder Julian Assange, and the Church of Scientology, issued an ultimatum to the Topeka, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church.

Wbc Said Anonymous in an open letter:

We, the collective super-consciousness known as ANONYMOUS - the Voice of Free Speech & the Advocate of the People - have long heard you issue your venomous statements of hatred, and we have witnessed your flagrant and absurd displays of inimitable bigotry and intolerant fanaticism. We have always regarded you and your ilk as an assembly of graceless sociopaths and maniacal chauvinists & religious zealots, however benign, who act out for the sake of attention & in the name of religion.

Being such aggressive proponents for the Freedom of Speech & Freedom of Information as we are, we have hitherto allowed you to continue preaching your benighted gospel of hatred and your theatrical exhibitions of, not only your fascist views, but your utter lack of Christ-like attributes.

They added:

ANONYMOUS cannot abide this behavior any longer. The time for us to be idle spectators in your inhumane treatment of fellow Man has reached its apex, and we shall now be moved to action. Thus, we give you a warning: Cease & desist your protest campaign in the year 2011, return to your homes in Kansas, & close your public Web sites.

Should you ignore this warning, you will meet with the vicious retaliatory arm of ANONYMOUS: We will target your public Websites, and the propaganda & detestable doctrine that you promote will be eradicated; the damage incurred will be irreversible, and neither your institution nor your congregation will ever be able to fully recover. It is in your best interest to comply now, while the option to do so is still being offered, because we will not relent until you cease the conduction & promotion of all your bigoted operations & doctrines.

The warning has been given. What happens from here shall be determined by you.

Yesterday, the Westboro Baptist Church took up the gauntlet, telling Anonymous, "Bring It!"

  1. The only thing Westboro and the Phelps' want is attention. So, they're loving this.

  2. Anonymous,

I see no point in waiting. They invited you to "Bring It On" so have at it.

  3. I love the Anoymous Hackers! Taking the Westboro websites down is only a temporary solution, but at least it pisses the Westboro creeps off!

  4. agreed, attention is what they crave, but i wish 'anonymous' luck;

i've always wondered why Westboro almost exclusively cites the epistles of Saul of Tarsus & the Old Testament almost exclusively in their rants.

they ignore the message of love & acceptance that JC talks about in the gospels.

coincidence? i think not. as i recall there were only two things that JC spoke in strong negative terms about - divorce & usury, especially in the temple.

  6. Oh my goodness! I've been trying to get on their site and all I get is "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".

  7. You see, this is why I pray to Mudkipz.

Also, here's a fun little game: reread WBC's letter to anonymous, only this time read it in Paul Lynde's voice. It makes SO much more sense that way.

  8. The Westboro Baptist Church should be razed with every member of it inside when it happens. The poison these people spread is detrimental to the world and they should no longer be allowed to operate. Screw free speech, screw freedom of religion, a line has to be drawn and I hope the internet group ANONYMOUS does what they say they'll do and shut them down completely.

  9. Oh really WBC, quit the histrionics. You're making Lady Bunny look like a demure office worker by comparison.

  10. WBC's hateful homophobic website remains accessible as of 11:22 AM CT Sunday, February 20th. OK, Anonymous, you can have at 'em now.

  11. I'm pretty sure whoever wrote the response doesn't know what the word "draconian" means.

  12. This is too delicious. Bearing no relationship to the Real Thing, the ungodly god of the WBC is about to get its unholy pie hole shut. I'm already dancing with laughter.

  13. @ JEREMY WEST - Nice, but I prefer to read it in Charles Nelson Riley's voice.....a la Bic Banana Ink Crayons.

  14. You either believe in free speech and freedom of religion or you don't. Their rights end where our rights begin, but nothing they do (besides possibly the funeral pickets) ever crosses that line and they know it. It may bother the hell out of us that they're allowed to spew that kind of vitriol, but it's also why we're allowed to do the same against them. I don't agree with ANONYMOUS' actions (and seriously, how do they expect Westboro to respond), but I do know that Westboro is outmatched here, so it'll be nice to see them get tech-destroyed.

  15. God hates hackers now too? *sigh* Guess they gotta make more signs!

here's hoping they know as much about th interwebs as they apparently know about visual design!

  16. 1st: I'm glad the god these people people in doesn't exist.

2nd: I wish the hackers luck in showing Westboro that the 21st century is more powerful that the 1st century.

  17. Westboro is just a crapper full of Santorum. Doesn't bother me a bit that their freedom of speech is impaired. If all you spew is venom, it is fitting someons should shut you up.

    Posted by: candideinnc | Feb 20, 2011 12:53:32 PM

  18. I really don't think the WBC is so bad for gays or people who dislike religion.

    Posted by: 11 | Feb 20, 2011 1:13:01 PM

  19. I just wish that Westboro would stop lying and implicating God in their agenda. God doesn't hate fags (or anyone else for that matter), Westboro Baptist "Church" does!

    Posted by: AdamKW | Feb 20, 2011 1:18:24 PM

  20. "You either believe in free speech and freedom of religion or you don't."

That's it in a nutshell. All those applauding this action might not feel the same way if someone shut down sites like Towleroad for what they would believe are the same reasons.

    Posted by: DG | Feb 20, 2011 1:22:56 PM

  21. "Freedom of Speech" is a myth.

Speech is Power and cosnequently fought over as such. "Money Talks" consequently those of us without it don't get to speak quite as loudly as those that have.

Especially those who don't have to pay taxes ie. Religion.

Right-wing hysteria over taxation stems largely from the fact that The Jig is Up and those of us who actually have a Moral Center will be deminding in ever-increasing numbers that those who believe in a Big Invisible Bi-Polar Daddy Who Lives in The Sky will have to pay their fair share.

  22. Freedom of Religion in America has become freedom to discriminate. And I will not defend Catholics and Baptists and Muslims and Mormons and all the hateful evangelicals like the Westboro group. I want secular government. Screw religion!

    Posted by: candideinnc | Feb 20, 2011 1:33:07 PM

  23. I am FULLY onboard with the secular government/tax religion idea - but we have a LONG way to go in this country for that to be even remotely considered.

    Posted by: DG | Feb 20, 2011 1:36:11 PM

  24. I agree with DG. I find it odd that the self-proclaimed "Voice of Free Speech" is shutting down WBC's website.

    Posted by: Eric | Feb 20, 2011 2:17:15 PM

  25. If the situation was reversed and WBC could shut down gay sites, they would. They started this war, let's finish it.

After the anti-gay movement went after our basic rights as US citizens, all "civility" disappeared. Nobody's defending our 10th and 14th amendment rights vis-a-vis marriage (except in court) and the right-wing machine has launched a relentless and unending campaign of well-funded hate against us.

So we must respond. With greater effectiveness than the bigots.

Rick Santorum's problem is a great example of how we can respond. His political career is over. Next, WBC. After that, any politician, regardless of party, who doesn't stand for us.

We need the political establishment to fear our power of expression, balloting and articulation more than the trailer-park denizens they "represent."
