Islamist Stickers Declare 'Gay Free Zone' in East London, Warn of Punishment

Gayfreezone

Stickers declaring the area a "gay free zone" and warning that "Allah is severe in punishment" have popped up around East London.

Pink Paper reports:

The stickers were distributed around the Whitechapel, Shoreditch and Poplar areas over the weekend. Specifically, they were targeted at schools and pubs, including the gay-friendly George and Dragon.

Equality campaigner Peter Tatchell – who has been attacked by Muslim groups three times in the capital – condemned the behaviour.

He said: "These stickers are part of a trend by Islamists and fundamentalists to target LGBT people. It is happening at universities and in communities. The main victims of this hate-mongering are LGBT Muslims.

Police are working to identify those who posted the stickers, which have been removed:

"A minority of homophobes blinded by their hate and closed minded views are trying to gain power and wider voice by publicly putting up banners targeting the LGBT community," said Ali Hilli of Iraqi LGBT.

"This small group of narrow minded people do not represent Islam or the Muslim community. In fact, a sentiment of rejection and condemnation for such a small group is growing among all Muslims. It is our duty to stop them and stand up to them whether we are Muslims, Jews or Christians."

A spokesperson for Tower Hamlets council told us: “We work hard to actively foster a climate of acceptance and tolerance, and combat all forms of discrimination and harassment within the borough. We are appalled by the actions of those who have produced and posted these stickers. We treat issues like this very seriously, and these incidents are being investigated by the borough's Hate Crime Team who are working alongside the local police."

  1. I just commented on the Black Cap post but seeing this scares and pisses me off. East London is one of the most accepting areas in the city and having lived there for nearly two years I can say that I walked home countless times in the early morning hours drunk and without a worry. the G&D and Joiners' were my locals and when I make my way back to London I intend on picking up where I left off. East London and especially in that area do have a rather large Muslim population but I have never had an issue with any of that. If nothing else I felt safer living among everyone. To think that this might cause unrest between the gay and Muslim community which for the most part live in harmony with each other is very disturbing. How a few little shits can use a religion to terrorize a group of people is beyond cowardly especially through propaganda. Sad days.

  2. I wish violent thugs would be screened out by immigration authorities instead of ever being allowed to become a menace to police resources and society.
Aren't hundreds of thousands of security cameras carpeting London from one end to the other. Should it not be easy to identify the source of these threatening messages?

  3. wow. hadn't really understood how bothered the brits are with muslim immigrants, but seeing this is making me do a double take. a minority asking for legal rights is one thing, but coming into one of the biggest cities in the world and acting like they're in charge? that's not right.

  4. Sad, but not a surprise. Religionists are going after our community worldwide in a severe way and will continue to do so, as they see us as the last group that they have any sort of meaningful power against to control. They see us as their threat, and thus, their biggest enemy. Hopefully these suspects are apprehended.

  5. Yup, these are the "moderate" Muslims that Democrats here in the US and Labor/Tories in the UK like to pal around with.

Islam and open democracy CANNOT co-exist.

  6. A few things need mentioning I think. Firstly please don't turn this into an immigration issue. There are many Muslim immigrants it is true and of the thousand upon thousands of them there are some bad apples. Just like there are White supremacists among the thousands of yearly eastern and western White Christians a year. And for all anyone knows right now these are being put up by teenagers who are first second third or further generation Brits. To assume it is an influx of radical Islamists is rushing to assumptions. Also there are cameras in lot of places but in some of these areas because they are less touristy they are fewer around. So usually it falls to the community to notice and report things like in other countries. So yeah just wanted to point out that stricter regulations on immigration isnt really the right approach and a more watchful community is what is needed. That being said East London could probably do with a little more police presence at times.

  7. Um...what? Will the commenters above spouting off about immigration tell us how they know the people responsible for these stickers are immigrants? Britain has many second and (no doubt) third generation British citizens.

Also, the Association of British Muslims has condemned this action, something it might have helped to mention in the story:

    http://news.pinkpaper.com/NewsStory/4837/15/02/2011/association-of-british-muslims-condemn-homophobic-stickers.aspx

"Co-director Paul Salahuddin Armstrong told PinkPaper.com: "There is nothing in the Qur’an against LGBT people.""

The people posting these stickers are wretched bigots but nothing is gained when condemning other people's hatred by being as bigoted yourself.

  8. This leap in homophobic incidents is following fiscal austerity with high unemployment. However, islamic extremism is relatively immune to output gaps. The solution is a more invasive, radical approach to assimilation, ignoring the nihilistic moans of tolerance and equal respect from the multicult cult premised on the weak sauce of domestic homophobia as somehow equivalent to islamic extremism. And addressing native homophobia with draconian sentencing, continued outreach and full employment.

  9. the draconian sentencing was a joke...europeans don't know how to punish criminals.

  10. It always seems to be young muslim youth in these European attacks and threats. Though it wouldn't surprise me to see conservative christians doing these things in the south. It is always linked to religious hatred. Religion is a problem, always will be.

  11. Rick Gold, you have no idea what you're talking about. You don't know who these people are any more than the police do, but obviously you're desperate to tie it to the evil libruls.

However, we do know that the GOP 'pals around' with the Christian taliban so much that they are practically indistinguishable from one another. Great support we've gotten from them over the years.

    Your twitter is ridiculous.

  12. How would the public react if someone posted "Muslim Free Zone" stickers everywhere?

  13. More religious haters, they just believe in different religious myths.

  14. For those of you who still believe this won't happen in America, you are only fooling yourselves. Islam is far, far more evil than the worst of Christianity could ever be.

  15. Gays will always be a tiny minority. Muslims like to preserve their sense of religious and cultural superiority. And they grow steadily disguised into the notion that multiculturalism is inherently good no matter what. At the end of the day guess who is going to lose the bet.

  16. As an american living in East London (4 years and counting) I can say that there is a very strange relationship between the gay community here and islam. I have had my muslim landlord, who had recently returned from Hajj, discuss gay saunas with me (he used to be a cab driver and frequently drive people home from them) while fixing the sink for me and my boyfriend, and I've had people throw trash and spit at my boyfriend and I when we left the above mentioned Joiners Arms. Immigration is not the issue in these areas, so much as it is assimilation and integration into the wider fabric of society, I have had friends comment, not in a cruel or intentionally racist way, that they felt like they were in a different country when they got off the tube at whitechapel. The recent influx of immigrants primarily from bangladesh have not been integrated into British society in any meaningful way, and as a result they tend to become more fervent in their religious beliefs than they were prior to coming to the UK. This is not a failure on one side or the other, but a failure on both (the immigrants and the UK nationals) and until it is addressed, along with the poverty many of them live in these issues will not improve.

  17. The Brits, Europeans and Canadians have been notorious for 40 years or more with not integrating their immigrants, especially their more exotic immigrants. It's officially called Multiculturalism and was [still is?] compared positively by 'Progressives' vis-a-vis the American 'Melting Pot' which Brit, Euro and Canadian 'Progressives' traditionally have scorned. Multiculturalism means the various ethnicities, races, etc., should not have to 'Melt' and conform to the dominant traditional culture of their new home. An American-style Melting Pot expects everyone to adopt their new country's dominant culture while at the same time retaining some sentimental aspects [food, etc.,] of the Old Country.

It's now [after 40 plus years of social experimentation] been pretty much universally acknowledged 'Multiculturalism' is a failure. And the reality is, America has always done a better job integrating it's immigrants with it's 'Melting Pot.'

  21. As the article states and as JC points out above, the Association of British Muslims and other British groups have condemned these anti-gay actions.

In comparison, how many American Christian protestant or Catholic churches have criticized even one specific action by any of the "Family" associations listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center as "hate groups"? Those groups make some kind of radically anti-gay and offensive statements nearly every week. The notoriously violence-promoting Rev. Donald Spitz, for example, was out there running around last week saying gay parents should be forcibly removed from their kids and thrown in prison for life. Quick, link me to a major American Christian organization condemning these views. I'd genuinely love to see one.

Unless you're as crazily extreme as Fred Phelp's Westboro Church, American churches tend to sit by and let you say whatever vicious and threatening anti-gay thing you want without raising even a peep. And even Westboro only promoted an American Christian backlash when they started criticizing the Catholic church, certain fundamentalist ministers, and Judaism, as well as picketing soldier's funerals. If they'd have just stuck to the gays, most American churches would have likely kept their mouths shut.

So if we're gonna get comparative, it looks like at least some major British Muslims are pushing back against these anti-gay actions. I wonder what American Christian churchs' and major Christian organizations' response would be if these fliers appeared in, say, An American Southern state citing a passage from the Old Testament? I'm betting crickets, for the most part.

  23. How can Paul Salahuddin Armstrong of the Association of British Muslims honestly tell PinkPaper.com "There is nothing in the Qur’an against LGBT people"?

Any student of the Qur'an knows there are five specific mentions of homosexuality in the Qur'an. These five passages form the basis for the sha'ria laws against homosexuality and the death penalties in seven Islamic countries: Afghanistan, Iran, Mauritania, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Yemen.

The only differences of opinion that exist within Islamic scholarship are about punishment, reformation, and what standards of proof are required before physical punishment becomes lawful. There is also debate as to whether both the active and the passive participants should be punished or just the passive participant.

    From the Qur'an:

"We also sent Lut: He said to his people: Do ye commit lewdness such as no people in creation (ever) committed before you? For ye practice your lusts on men in preference to women: ye are indeed a people transgressing beyond bounds. And his people gave no answer but this: they said, "Drive them out of your city: these are indeed men who want to be clean and pure!"" (Qur'an 7:80-82)

"Of all the creatures in the world, will ye approach males, And leave those whom Allah has created for you to be your mates? Nay, ye are a people transgressing (all limits)! They said: "If thou desist not, O Lut! thou wilt assuredly be cast out!" He said: "I do detest your doings:" "O my Lord! deliver me and my family from such things as they do!" So We delivered him and his family,- all Except an old woman who lingered behind. But the rest We destroyed utterly. We rained down on them a shower (of brimstone): and evil was the shower on those who were admonished (but heeded not)! Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful." (Qur'an 26:165-175)

"Would ye really approach men in your lusts rather than women? Nay, ye are a people (grossly) ignorant! But his people gave no other answer but this: They said, "Drive out the followers of Lut from your city: these are indeed men who want to be clean and pure!" But We saved him and his family, except his wife; her We destined to be of those who lagged behind. And We rained down on them a shower (of brimstone): and evil was the shower on those who were admonished (but heeded not)!" (Qur'an 27:55-58)

"And (remember) Lut: behold, he said to his people: "Ye do commit lewdness, such as no people in Creation (ever) committed before you. Do ye indeed approach men, and cut off the highway? - and practise wickedness (even) in your councils?" But his people gave no answer but this: they said: "Bring us the Wrath of Allah if thou tellest the truth." (Qur'an 29:28-29)

"If any of your women are guilty of lewdness, Take the evidence of four (Reliable) witnesses from amongst you against them; and if they testify, confine them to houses until death do claim them, or Allah ordain for them some (other) way. If two men among you are guilty of lewdness, punish them both. If they repent and amend, Leave them alone; for Allah is Oft-returning, Most Merciful." (Qur'an 4:15-16)

  24. There should be gay free zones. Not everyone wants to be around sexual perverts.
    Habakkuk 1:12

... O LORD, thou hast ordained them for judgment ...

Leviticus 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

1 Kings 14:24 And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.
