With Two New Commitments, Marriage Equality Now Has 23 of 24 Votes Needed to Pass Maryland Senate

Two previously uncommitted Maryland state senators, Katherine Klausmeier and Edward Kasemeyer, have committed to vote "yes" on marriage equality legislation making its way through the state legislature, the Baltimore Sun reports:

Maryland Sen. Katherine Klausmeier said today that she has decided to vote in favor of same-sex marriage, putting the measure within a breath of passage in the Senate.

"I just weighed all of the options," said the Baltimore County Democrat, who earlier told The Sun that she was torn about the issue. "It's about fairness."

Kasemeyer committed earlier on Monday:

Kasemeyer, a Democrat who represents Howard and Baltimore counties, had not previously said how he planned to vote on the bill. Many had believed he would not support it because he represents a conservative area.

This year changes in a key senate panel delivered advocates the best chance they've ever had to legalize same-sex marriage. They believe that they have the 29 votes needed to cut off debate in the chamber and vote. The bill is expected to be voted out of committee this Thursday.

  2. Wow, soclose. And with the woman senator who committed to voting for the bill in case the votes are there, it looks like a done deal. It's too early to celebrate, but this is great!

Joan Carter Conway will support gay marriage as well according to this source: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/annapolis/2011/02/kasemeyer_declares_support_for.html

  3. A while ago I contacted all of the "maybe/unsure/uncommitted" Maryland senators and Senator Kathy Klausmeier was the only response I got. She said was considering the issue and my stance. I'm glad she's on the right side of history and civil rights!
