Fetus Heartbeat Undetectable as Abortion Bill Stunt Fails

Faith2Action wingnut Janet Porter called a fetus to testify before the Ohio House today in support of n anti-choice 'Heartbeat Bill'. Porter's stunt was a bust, Right Wing Watch reports.

Dayton Daily News: Porter

State lawmakers in Ohio have seen ultrasound images of two fetuses as proponents of what would be the most stringent abortion law in the nation pushed their proposal.

The bill would ban abortions after the first heartbeat can be medically detected.

Two young mothers were given ultrasounds in a packed room at the Statehouse as part of a House committee meeting Wednesday. The heartbeat of a fetus at 15 weeks gestation was easily detected. The heartbeat in a fetus of nine weeks gestation was difficult to detect.

  1. Well my assumption would be that they used the external ultrasound as they were in a packed courtroom. That was a dumb move b/c a 9 week heartbeat can only be detected by the vaginal ultrasound. We heard my daughter's heartbeat at 8 weeks when the internal ultrasound probe was used.

  2. News at 6:00 and 11:00: “The Christian lawmakers ’believe’ they heard the heartbeat of the nine week gestation fetus and faithfully approve the bill.”

  3. Are these people allowed to use SCIENTIFIC instruments such as an ULTRASOUND for their arguments?? They deny evolution, but they rely on an ultrasound?!! Heaven forbid.

  4. Whatever your view on abortion, a fetus [baby in latin] is not just an inanimate slab of meat.

I certainly believe abortions are legit for medical reasons, rape [although I understand pregnancy from rapes is statistically rare], and things like the morning after pill need to be made more widely available [birth control methods, devices, drugs are EASILY available and have been for decades, yet people still use abortion as a form of birth control?], but I have serious issues with the blase and non-chalant attitude some people have regarding abortion, especially late term. Not to mention methods used to abort [kill] a fetus, especially late term, and the MANY grotesque scandals surrounding abortion clinics.

It's estimated 50% of potential black births are aborted. That's a tragedy. Something is wrong.

  5. if this idiots don't like abortions then they shouldn't have them. Just like divorces...or gay marriage. They have no right to tell someone else how to live their lives and the protest loudly when others try to do so...perhaps we should force them to have abortions and to have gay sex and to divorce when they don't want so that they can know how intrusive their bullshit is on other people's lives.

  6. @LUC,

Do you know what eugenics is? Abortion is an off-shoot of eugenics. Planned Parenthood was created by eugenicists and given it's own brand because the Nazis ruined the eugenicist brand name among the general public.

Eugenics founders were no friends of gays or anyone considered different or deviant.

  7. Isn't Janet Porter famous for being a total flop? Didn't she waste several hundred thousand dollars on her "May Day" event which only a few people attended and had to pay some people back?

  8. @Ratbastard: Estimated by whom? Source? Show some data or link to a study before you go spouting off rumor.

If all abortions concern you, why would you single out an ethnic group with some unsourced, inflammatory "stat"?

  9. Local TV news in Columbus just had item about the 'fetus testimony', NO MENTION OF THE FAILURE.

  10. @JTLVR,

    The 50% figure concerns NYC

In New York City in 2007, 87,527 abortions were performed, with 43,568--or 49.8 percent--of the aborted babies being black, according to the CDC. The number of white babies aborted in 2007 in New York City was 37,870--or 43.3 percent. 6,089, or 7 percent, were babies of other races, according to the report.

According to the Census Bureau, there are 8,302,659 people in New York City, of whom 2,085,514--or 25 percent--are black. Thus, black babies in New York City were aborted at a rate that is twice the black share of the municipal population.

A report released in December by the New York Department of Health indicated that that black babies represented an even higher percentage among those aborted in New York City in 2009. That report said about 41 percent of pregnancies in the city ended in abortion in 2009 and 59.8 percent of those abortions were of black babies.

Do YOU know what eugenics is? You don't once mention how a woman choosing to end her pregnancy is at all related to the science "which advocates the use of practices aimed at improving the genetic composition of a population."

While that could be true in an absurd, dystopian, and conspiratorial way, because most women who have abortions do so of their own free-will, they are NOT related to some big brother policing the collective gene-pool of society. Healthy people are just as free to have an abortion as people with sicknesses or genetic diseases. That would not be the case if abortions were somehow a device of some eugenicist plot.

  12. @BC,

YES, I do know what eugenics is, smarta**. Do you?

    Posted by: ratbastard | Mar 2, 2011 12:44:06 PM

  13. "Abortion is an off-shoot of eugenics."

Huh, who knew the ancient Jews were pioneers of eugenics?

Let's try a bit of perspective here. Abortions have been common throughout human history, and in most cultures. Pulling the whole "Nazi" connection is a bit suspect.

As for Planned Parethood, you do realize that they actually offer many services that have nothing to do with abortions, right? All of my female friends who have been pregnant have used their services for help with prenatal care, getting nutrition information as well as help with finding doctors to help them throughout their pregnancy.

  14. Yes, RATBASTARD, I do.

I have shown that I do, and stated why I do not think eugenics and planned parenthood are currently related, or in some made-up plot to cleanse the world of specific people.

You, however, have done nothing but make ridiculous claims.

Far from being proof of the first statement, the second is saying a totally different thing.

  16. @LIAMB,

Actually, many eugenicists were and are Jewish. Even Israel, after all the occurred in Germany, practiced eugenics as official policy.

And yes smart-guy, I know perfectly well Planned Parenthood offers many services.

You've proved NOTHING. All you've done is express an opinion.

    You're incorrect.

  17. @ ratbastard re: Christopher you are incorrect:

If there were approximately 43,500 black children born in New York in 2007, Christopher is incorrect but that datum was not provided in your statement.

  19. What an embarrassing and grotesque spectacle these religionists are! Fortunately Christianity is in a slow but steady decline in the US (91% in 1948 to 77% in 2009) and the millennials, a highly unreligious group, will greatly increase the numbers identifying as atheist, agnostic, and unaffiliated. And the popular appeal of the new atheists will probably give the many social Christians-in-name-only the courage to come out of the closet. Hopefully, the US will follow Western Europe into a post-Christian era. In the UK the number of those identifying as Christian has dropped to an astonishing 50% and nearly half of those never attend church. In France 33% describe themselves as atheist whith 41% saying the existence of God was excluded or unlikely. Even the Catholic stronghold of Poland is becoming more secular. The American religious craziness must end. Do not remain silent.

  20. @CANDIDE,

There's a problem with your single paragraph synopsis:

Secular Europe is demographically dying. To maintain it's economy and welfare state, it must import large numbers of non-European immigrants. These immigrants are overwhelmingly very religious [and often non-Christian].

It is true the number of religious people in America has greatly declined, but this is really only true among the native white population. And demographically, the native born white population of America, like Europe, is dying off. It's being replaced by mostly non-1st world immigrants, most of whom are very religious and conservative.

    Posted by: ratbastard | Mar 2, 2011 2:04:09 PM

  21. Not really sure what they were trying to prove anyway. So a foetus has a heart beat, so what? Doesnt mean anything, the heart is just another organ. They were trying to use over emotional crap, not science to win an argument. That couldnt even do that right.

    Posted by: Rovex | Mar 2, 2011 2:09:53 PM

  22. @CANDIDE,

There's a problem with your synopsis:

    1) Demographically, secular Europe is dying. They must import many non-European immigrants and guest workers to maintain their economies and welfare states. Most of these immigrants and guest workers are very religious and conservative.

    2) It's true Americans are becoming much less religious, but really only true among native born whites. And the American native born white population is, like Europe's traditional native born population, demographically dying. Like Europe, we are also importing many non-1st world, secular immigrants, and most are far more religious and conservative socially than the average American.

And there's no question mainstream Protestant churches are dying, the Catholic church is maintaining it's position, and Protestant evangelical pentecostal fundamentalist churches are booming, especially among our immigrants.

  23. You can also take a few heart muscle cells, put them in a dish, and they'll pulsate. If they join together, they pulsate together. So what?

  24. Yeah, technically grandma has a heartbeat, but she's become a real financial drain, and I mean c'mon...let's not get all emotional and sh*t! I mean she is old for Christ's sake!

Yeah, let's not get too emotional. These AIDS patients are costing too much friggin money as it is. I mean, yeah, technically, they have a heartbeat and whatnot, but c'mon.....they'd be really better off dead.

  25. @FLORENCE,

Yeah, I hear ya...that stupid human fetus is nothing! Just rip it out, stick a scissors in it's head, throw it in the God damn trash. The more the merrier. Who friggin needs 'em?
