Watch: Russian Activist Nikolai Alexeyev Storms Off Live TV Show During Homophobic Debate

Yesterday in my post about Moscow Pride, I mentioned that Russian gay activist Nikolai Alexeyev had stormed off the stage of a TV show after an unfair debate stacked against him with Russia's version of Maggie Gallagher and a homophobic host.

Here's some of Chicago activist Andy Thayer's first-person account:

Alekseev was debating Alexander Hinstein, a deputy in the State Duma (parliament) and member of Vladir Putin’s United Russia Party.  The last straw was when Solovyev, host of the nationally broadcast show, Poednivo (roughly “The Dual” in English), called on an audience member who accused gays of physically threatening her young daughter.

Alekseev tore off his microphone and walked off as the cameras rolled. Shortly thereafter, the LGBT members of the audience also walked out.

The topic of the debate was whether or not LGBTs have the legal right to assemble and protest. It is emblematic of how far our movement has to go in this country that we are basically debating our existence, and a prominent leader of the ruling party has the chutzpah to say “No!”

  1. He's a good man, that Alekseev. We need to get mad again and fight like he does. Now that's courage.

  2. Agree, Nikko. He's determined to not be a victim (and the LGBT community) of the extremist homophobia in Russia anymore. I have so much respect for him and his efforts.

  3. Well he does go a bit over the top here.

A few corrections: this is not just "an audience member," but the woman who claims to be THE sexologist of Russia, who has written a book called "Gays and Lesbians" about how destructive gays are taking over TV, music, and the Duma and converting poor innocent straight kids. She's Maggie Gallagher and Socarides combined.

But Alekseev does call her a "scarecrow in a wig and a hat." He could be more effective if he were less temperamental. He's unfortunately alienated huge numbers of potential allies in Russia.

  4. I'd have more respect for him if his Facebook posts didn't so often slide into inflammatory anti-Semitic, misogynistic, anti-American rants and histrionics. Then, when he offends people and they argue back, he says they just can't stand "free speech" and "the truth" (i.e. only his version of it). In other words, he needs and loves constant attention and will do anything to stay in the limelight, including alienating many gay Russians.

That said, I heartily commend him for taking on the insanely homophobic attitudes of the Russian powers-that-be and so-called sex psychologists. Few can match his fearless outspokenness and non-stop activism.

  5. Considering the lack of rights in general in the former USSR, and the fact they shoot journalists who investigate corruption, he has a long way to go.

  6. The counter: Is it the total number in favor of the LGBT's right to assembly (724) and those against (3,051)?
