Delaware Governor Jack Markell signed the state's civil union bill into law last night, the News Journal reports:

Markell signed the bill before a jammed, cheering house at The Queen in Wilmington. About 600 people were expected at the reception and signing organized by Equality Delaware, and it appeared that they all showed up.

Said Markell at the signing:

Tonight, with the signing of this law, we say to any Delawarean regardless of sexual orientation - if you’ve committed yourself to someone, and you’ve made that pledge to spend your life together in partnership, when life or death decisions come, we honor your right to make those decisions together.

Tonight, we say to loving and committed couples across the state who want the law to endorse the promise that they made long ago in their hearts - 'Your love is equally valid and deserving, your family is now equal under the law.'

And tonight, we say to children of gay and lesbian parents in committed relationships all over our state – and there are so many wonderful kids, including many here tonight, growing up in those families all over our state – we say to you: It doesn't matter if your parents are gay or straight. The people you love and look up to and that are dedicating their lives and love to raising you – those are your parents. You are a family. And while we’ve known it, and you’ve known it for years, tonight, that equality becomes real under law."

The law takes effect January 1, 2012.

  5. Equality Delaware said "no" to allowing opposite-sex couples to enter a civil union. No wonder people dont believe us when we claim that we fight for equality under the law. Rep. George said that this bill eliminates segregation. We fight in new jersey saying civil unions actively harm our families. We sue in california saying our relationships are more than a collection of legal rights. In all cases we say discrimination is wrong... Now in delaware a new "LGBT rights" organization publically lauds our new "equality", how civil unions are equal. That this somehow ends segregation. That were proud to have stopped heterosexuals from being treated equally under this new law. That opposite sex couples would change the definition of civil unions. And how our children will be happy to know that their families will now be "treated the same". We claim that orgs like NOM are hypocrites...this proves that we're all hypocrites

  6. Equality? So if you are in a civil union, you're married. And if your heterosexual friends are married, they are in a civil union (but with federal benefits)? Still not really equal. Progress for sure, and that's great, but there is no equal when it comes to civil unions.
