Anti-Gay Reggae Singer Buju Banton Gets 10 Years in Prison

Buju Banton, who was found guilty of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five or more kilogrammes of cocaine, of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking offence and using the wires to facilitate a drug-trafficking offence in February, has been sentenced, the Jamaica Gleaner reports:

Banton Buju Banton, real name Mark Myrie, has been sentenced to ten years in a maximum security prison. Grammy-winning reggae superstar, Buju Banton has been sentenced to 10 years in the Florida District Court in the United States this morning.

US District Judge, James Moody imposed the sentence when Buju, whose real name is Mark Myrie, appeared in a Tampa Federal Courtroom this morning.

Ten years was the minimum sentence. He faced 15 years to life, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

The anti-gay controversy surrounding Banton stems primarily from a song called "Boom Boom Bye" in which he sings about shooting gay men in the head, pouring acid on them and burning them alive.

  4. We don't have to worry about him anymore. The crimes for which he was convicted will result in his deportation immediately after serving the 10 year sentence and he will never be allowed back into the US. All of the charges mentioned are considered "aggravated felonies", which, under US immigration law, carry a lifetime bar to re-entry to the USA.

  5. wonderful news.

it's always infuriated me that a guy can promote hatred against gay people whilst glorifying drugs, misogyny and violence.

    enjoy your assrapings, you turd.

  6. Cool! But why only 10 years? Our judges are really soft on crime.

  8. Actually, ten years is fine. His career is over. If he survives prison, Mark will be shipped out of the country and never allowed to return. Good riddance to homophobic trash.

  9. I find these calls for jail rape as repulsive and disgusting as the anti-gay rhetoric that spilled from this man's mouth. There is an epidemic of sexual assault in this country, inside of prison walls and out, where all people, gay to straight, become victims of our culture of hyper-sexualized masculinity and rape apologia, and all we can do is make more jokes about it?

This isn't news. This is just another pile of tragedy heaped on top of an even bigger one. I cannot say I feel sympathy for him, but I hope he at least finds enlightenment.

  10. I agree with Jesus. Wishing anyone rape is really wrong. Man-on-man rape in prison is an epidemic in this country and across the globe. I think this evil, hateful, drug-peddling, violent, armed man deserved his sentence and even longer, but it's wrong to promote any kind of sexual assault.

  11. While I don't want to perpetuate the cruel sentiment of sexual assault that exists in this thread, I do want to wish Buju and his future boyfriends and bitches a decade of happiness!

  13. "Banton was charged in connection with a 2004 incident in which he, as part of a group of about a dozen people, allegedly beat six men believed to be homosexuals, after forcing entry into a house in Kingston, near Banton's recording studio. One of the victims lost use of an eye in the attack. Charges against Banton were dismissed by the judge in the case in January 2006, for lack of evidence."

  14. This man can rot for all I care. He not only harms our community directly, but helps fuel a environment of hatred and violence. 10 years is not enough.

  16. "I find these calls for jail rape as repulsive and disgusting as the anti-gay rhetoric that spilled from this man's mouth."

This guy has not just spewed "anti-gay rhetoric", he has called for the MURDER of LGBT people thru his so-called "music". Because of this, I don't care if he's raped in prison. IMO, he deserves whatever he gets.

  17. @EGL, so what does calling for his rape do? Furthermore, how reflective is the fact that people are wishing this on him of our ability to stoop to such a low level? We criticize and boycott him for calling for the murder of gay people, but then we turn around and call for him to be sexually assaulted. How are we any better?

Or is this just about "getting even"? This man is clearly not innocent of perpetuating anti-gay violence through his lyrics, but is it wrong to wish for some sort of intellectual breakthrough? An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind, you know.

He deserves exactly what he advocates-misery,hatred,violence. Life sometimes works out that way and it couldn't have happened to a more deserving closeted punk.

  21. While I would never want harm to come to anyway in the form of rape... I believe the best way he will suffer is the anticipation that he could be raped the torture that he will have to endure for those 10yrs just wating and wondering each night when he goes to sleep wondering will tomorrow be the day.... I would take that type of torture on this thug anyday!

  22. He's tainting your mind and soul. You can't win against hate with hate. We should be wise, brave and superior, not evil monsters wishing rape and death.

  23. Shame on you all. This man has never laid a hand on a single gay person. What is it? You can't take the fact that people don't agree ith your sexual choices. Just say that you don't understand Jamaica and stay away. Plenty of islands for you to visit. You can't force people to agree with you. He has the right to his personal opinion. If you know anything about Jamaican culture, they say lick shot for everything. It means they don't want no parts of what you saying. Since you know this, why you want to be around us. Why you come in our private dances and put on your display. Go to the gay club where you're comfortable. When you come to our clubs, you ruin it for everyone. So selfish you people are. Actually, no one cares about what you want to do. Just like you shouldn't care about what we want to do. Don't worry yourself about Buju. He's an international superstar. He's a millionaire many times over. He's gonna be okay. It's really simple. He has a moral disagreement with you. Not everyone will like you. Didn't your momma tell you that? If he has sex in prison it will be his choice and his business. Go mind your own.

  24. I don't understand you people. We teach our little boys that they should meet a girl, marry, have children, raise a family. You want to tell them to bend over and let a grown man take advantage of them. You tell them not to listen to their parents, because you love them more than we do, right? Look, the black community has enough problems. We need our black men to stand by their black women and lift up the race. You just come to deceive and tear us down. Leave us alone. Don't you have enough. All the riches?. All the power? They lick shot - not to kill you. But to warn you to back the f up. You and your human rights. Who said you weren't human? We're human too and we want you to leave us and our children alone. Slavery is over. You don't own us.
