New York Bishop: 'Same Sex Marriage Is Another Nail In The Coffin'
The New York Daily News has published an op-ed by the Bishop of Brooklyn, Nicholas Anthony DiMarzio, wherein he naturally slams the fantastic news from New York. He writes:
Tragically, we no longer understand the primary purpose of marriage as the institution by which a man and woman bring new life into the world and teach the child to become a productive citizen.
In striving for that end, the man and woman discover their own mutual consolation. Tragically, we somehow have come to view marriage as legitimizing our individual need for love and affection.
As a consequence we have all witnessed the surge in numbers of divorce, single parenthood and cohabitation outside of marriage. Not even thirty years ago this would have been almost unthinkable and certainly scandalous.
I believe the passage of same sex marriage is another "nail in the coffin" of marriage. It is destructive because we fail to view marriage in the context of a vocation: a calling to participate in the great enterprise of forming the next generation. Marriage is reduced to an empty honor.
You can read the entire piece here.
Meanwhile, Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan, who has been very vocally against marriage equality, was mum on the subject during mass today. He spoke to reporters afterward: “I sort of needed a good dose of the Lord’s grace and mercy because I’ve been down a little lately as you can imagine.”

Dear Bishop,
Your hypocrisy makes me want to vomit.
Signed,
GOD.

Priest, beware your beard,
I mean to tug it and to cuff you soundly:
Under my feet I stamp thy cardinal's hat:
In spite of pope or dignities of church,
Here by the cheeks I'll drag thee up and down.
Good, eh? I didn't write it. Henry VI, Part I, III, 1

The dishonorable Bishop is a sexist pig. He claims marriage is supposed to be an honor? And honor of what I wonder... an honor is gender privilege to marry the person you love? What a bigot.

The last time I checked we are living in the 21st century not the 12th.

DiMarzio & Archvillian Dolan need to finally realize that THEY are the ones who have destroyed marriage with their rigidity and misunderstanding of caring, hope & compassion; their Jesus preached love and acceptance of ALL but they have forgotten their own ministry...

Another nail in the coffin for religion I hope. I can hear its nails scratching from within coffin.

The Catholic Church seems to have lost its way in failing to promote social justice. The irony is that a number of spiritual leaders are likely gay, but history has shown the destructive behavior of repressed gay men who have power. My sense is that the Church will continue to devolve as droves continue to leave the Church in search of a spiritual journey that is more fulfilling.

This clown has a lot of beliefs he lists in his tiny-minded little rant about marriage.
Oh, that's right, he also believes in God, a virgin birth, people rising from the dead, crusades that resulted in the deaths of millions, holy wars, heaven, hell and other sick fantasies.
I believe he should see a shrink, and quickly, for all his world-destroying delusions.

I'm telling ya, God botherers, keep up with the horribly misbegotten Natural Law arguments please! You were wrong in the Bible, you were wrong with Constantine, you were wrong in the 16th century, and you'll continue to be wrong for eternity. So PLEASE, continue OK? Make sure you say it loud and proud, and spell it out what misbegotten haters you are at every opportunity, thank you.

None of what the bishop of Brooklyn says makes sense.
Now Timmy Dolan is depressed because gay people can marry each other and he needs a good dose of the Lord's grace and mercy? He does. He needs mercy and forgiveness for lying about the relationships and marriages of gay people and for trying to stand in the way of gay people marrying each other.

"Tragically, we somehow have come to view marriage as legitimizing our individual need for love and affection."
Correct me if I'm wrong, Bishop, but would that be the same individual need for love and affection that you folks don't want anybody to consummate outside of marriage?
The apostle Paul disagrees with you that procreation is the point of marriage, by the way. He was of the opinion that it was just peachy for people to get married in order to legitimize their passions for one another.

I am not surprised by two things, the same old garbage out of the mouths of the prelates of my previous church, and secondly the same vitriolic nonsense out of the comment section. Really, pull their tax exmpt status as they are taking a political stand? Hmmm. I guess Martin Luther King should have had his tax exempt status pulled also, or is it if we agree with the words out of their mouths it is ok. Personally I think all religion is bull, and desrve no tax exeption, but hey General Electric doesn't pay taxes either. BTW is is "couldn't care less".

Empty rhetoric from start to finish. How do people fall for this?
Posted by: Rob | Jun 26, 2011 10:29:09 PM
This is what they call hand wringing 101. The church can do nothing about the prevalence of non-Catholics (a tragedy all by itself to the church), pre-marital sex, divorce, abortion, adultery or pornography, but decides to concentrate on gay marriage as an issue. It's as if they've given up on what matters and are simply trying to draw a line in the sand.

Ths guy to just shut up or the state department will keep him and his priests in court on Sundays answering questions about fetishes. There won't be no time for Sunday Mass.

Blah, blah, blah...old fat priest yammering on about morality. Utterly predictable, utterly medieval, utterly tiresome.

There they go: warming over that old line that the purpose of marriage is to make babies. And they're so damned stupid that they haven't the faintest idea how many people that idiotic view of marriage offends. The Roman catholic leadership is already bleeding copiously from their feet. you'd think that at some point they'd realize it and stop shooting.

@David in Houston: And getting married has never been a prerequisite for procreation.

Doesn't this sound like another round of the same old Catholic double talk? Is anyone really listening?

If GLUTTONY is one of the Seven Deadly Sins, why do all these bishops have THREE CHINS???
