Tracy Morgan Apologizes for Homophobic Rant: ‘I’m Not a Hateful Person’

Morgan 30 Rock star Tracy Morgan has apologized via his publicist for a homophobic rant that offended fans this week at a Nashville stand-up comedy show:

“I want to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville. I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.”

  1. Jeff Kurtti says

“Although the substance of my actual beliefs is contained in the accounts of my ‘comedy performance,’ I am being pressured by my publicist, my employer, my co-stars, and the network so I don’t crap the bed and mess up my hugely profitable career, and foul the nest of ’30 Rock’ at the same time. Thanks for believeing that my ‘apology’ is anything other than covering my ass and those of my colleagues.”

  2. yonkersconquers says

I’m not a hateful person. There’s nothing hateful about claiming I would murder my son if he were gay.

Trying to get in front of the wave before it breaks, eh Mr. Morgan?

  3. Wes says

Doesn’t even look like it was written by him. I don’t see how anything he said could even be seen as comedy or a joke. There’s no punchline, its just a gay hating tangent. And not the first. In Tennessee, no less, where gay people really don’t need this kind of sh*t being reinforced (not that we do anywhere). I just want people to ditch him already, he’s not even funny. He drags the quality down of anything he’s in, and he’s a bigot to boot. Why is he still employed in the industry?

  4. Michael says

Oh my god Im in shock someone says something derogatory vile and hateful towards and about the LGBT community. Then once they get called on it they miraculously apologize for what they said and claim they are not hateful in the least blah blah blah blah…..

Same pattern with all of these bigots lather rinse repeat over and over and over again.

Your comments are all anyone needs to know about YOU MR Morgan and none of it is good or remotely redeemable either.

  5. MikeInSanJose says

Never cared for him in the first place, but he belongs in the pile where Michael Richards and Mel Gibson’s careers went to die…

  6. Erich says

I don’t believe one word of it. There’s no way you make a joke about killing your child if he turns out to be gay. He believes that crap.

  7. justme says

My response to Morgan is to use the words of Morgan’s own publicist in response to this matter: “There is no comment, thank you for your inquiry.”

  8. stpetegreg says

What a non-apology. I really didn’t want or expect one from him and now that he’s done it THROUGH his publicist, I’m just pissed off again. I’ve never thought he was funny in the slightest, just stupid childish jokes. If you want to get any information out of me, even my deepest darkest secrets, just force me to listen to his and Sarah Palin’s voices and I’ll tell you anything you want to know. OK, now on to something much more important, like Weiner’s weiner…

  9. RICK says

choice of words? As if describing the stabbing murder of his own son using different words might have made it better?

  10. SteveC says

    Apology NOT accepted.

    This ‘apology’ is meaningless PR.

30 Rock needs to fire his ass already.

  11. Grant says

Good luck trying to un-ring that bell, Morgan.

I feel sorry for Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, and the rest of the cast of 30 Rock. Tracy Morgan’s bigotry has irreparably fouled the show for a lot of people. I know that I won’t be able to watch it again, ever.

  12. jeremy says

amaezm, did lisa l. advocate violence against anyone? if so she should be condemned. if she did not then you should be for not seeing the life threatening issues here.

  13. Derrick from Philly says

That job on 30 Rock pays very well. He’s scared to sh.t right now…and false humility.

Homophobes who come from the kind of background that Morgan comes from are hateful, and they’ll often use language to shock and offend people. If he had a Gay son Morgan said, “I would stab the n.gger” That’s the kind of thing that comes out of mouth of a hateful man.

Well, we’ve found the Black Mel Gibson.

  14. jexer says

    Yeah yeah.

What’s in your heart doesn’t count if it has no editorial control over your career suicide spewing gob-hole.

  15. Bryan says

    His “choice of words.” Marvelous.

Predictably, extorting a meaningless apology in an attempt to censor someone results in their adding insult to injury. It’s no less than we deserve – when you strong arm someone into suppressing their actual beliefs and making nice, you deserve far worse than an insulting insincerity.

A people who simultaneously preach personal freedom while practicing de facto censorship deserve to get ripped a new one as their hypocrisy is exposed. It’s a shame that as a society we’ve abandoned journalism in favor of flavor-of-the-week targeted propaganda. There’s no one left to publicly slap our smug little faces when we do wrong, and while LGBTQ people are very well trained in self hatred, we’re seldom capable of productive self criticism.

We’re also remarkably unsubtle with regard to public opinion. An ignorant, offensive, hypocritical comic who thinks children committing suicide is funny is potentially a an even greater asset than Fred Phelps. A craven apologist padding his bank account by saying whatever we want to hear is of no use whatsoever.

  16. IAWrangler says

I don’t forgive you, Mr. Morgan. “30 Rock” was my favorite TV show; one of few I watch. Because of you and only you, I won’t be watching.

    Mr. Morgan meet Mr. Richards…

  17. Josh says

If we want anything done to show that this really isn’t acceptable…

We have to contact the advertisers on 30 Rock and boycott.

  18. FernLaPlante says

His PUBLICIST wrote that, Tracy doesn’t care. This is a shame b/c 30Rock is my favorite show. Maybe they can write him out next year and get someone crazier like…Charlie Sheen. 😉

  19. Wes says

I remember reading the first time about a homophobic outburst during one of his comedy shows where people walked out. It said that Jane Krakowski was there and gave him a standing ovation at the end of the show. She went on my sh*tlist for that.

  20. Gregoire says

Wes, Jane Krakowski is very supportive ‘friend of the gays’ so you must have heard that wrong.

  21. Dastius Krazitauc says

I’ve never liked him, so it wasn’t just “fans” he offended. And how many comics performing as themselves do material at odds with what is in their hearts? He was performing as Tracy Morgan, not Tracy Jordan.

  22. says

He ranted in the South because he knew that it would be accepted with the Republican State and anti-gay sentiment. If he had pulled the same crap in California, he probably would have played to an empty house.

Apologies of this nature are becoming too common. As with Michael Richards, he apologized, yet the (supposed) Black heirarchy wouldn’t accept it and felt it was shallow. The same here. I could care less about the race of the individual or profession, it’s the hateful words that were used, not just against the gay community but his own flesh and blood. Robin Williams is funny, Tracy Morgan is NOT!

  23. says

They’ve been trying to keep a lid on him for some time. Alec Bladwin’s announcement that he’s going to be leaving clearly means the end of “30 Rock” is nigh. Tina Fey can g on to anything she likes Jane Krakowski’s career track is liekwise solid.

Tracy Morgan? How about a remake of “Design For Living” with him Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan. Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino it will end with the trio in a bloody pile thanks to a murder-suicide pact.

  24. Be assertive says

What are the odds he used the same routine in previous comedy shows, but it just wasn’t publicized?

Re the apology: I’m afraid the train’s out of the station. And if this is a just world, the train is heading to Michael Richards Land.

If the train appears to be going anywhere other than Michael Richards Land, “30 Rock,” NBC, and Tracy Morgan’s performances need to be protested and boycotted the hell out of.

I hope Ellen DeGeneres speaks out as well.

The guy said he would stab his son to death if his son were effeminate.

  25. Dastius Krazitauc says

Clearly, Jane Krakowski, a close personal friend of Tracy’s, knew what was in his heart when she stood and applauded his homophobic jokes.

  26. Richard says

    T-o-o L-i-t-t-l-e,

    T-o-o L-a-t-e.

(sung to the tune of Rock Lobster by the B52s).

  27. mcNnyc says

    Apology=PR BS Period.
Choice of words was the issue?

    what?
you would have beat the SH^T out of your f@***ty son before you lynched his p*ssy N___ a**?

It’s satire see MR. Morgan said this:

“He said if his son that was gay he better come home and talk to him like a man and not [he mimicked a gay, high pitched voice] or he would pull out a knife and stab that little N (one word I refuse to use) to death.”

  28. mcNnyc says

I bet he gets a lot more fans for this rant than foes….he got his street cred back and will pack em in…that’s the sad truth.

Anyone REALLY think this will hurt his career?
Or that he takes this seriously?

  29. invisible_man says

You know….just because a black person is horribly homophobic doesn’t mean it’s suddenly OK to use racial invective.

There are black people who are gay. And gay people who are black. No-one should have choose a side.

  30. Charlie says

His apology seems rather unacceptable. So here’s what NBC should do with the show. The show within the show should be cancelled. That would give NBC the opportunity to reboot the franchise and get rid of the most expensive and troublesome actors. The Liz Lemon character should remain at NBC headquarters in some other capacity so they could retain the name 30 Rock. And they could keep the characters they want to keep in some other role, either as regulars or as guest stars.

  31. says

Ii wonder if i called this guy is a ghetto n****r if I could apologize it away and have anyone accept it?

  32. Jack says

Too late to start saying how “sorry” you are now. He’s a bigot and needs to be treated as such.

  33. Tonic says

    Lame BS apology.

Now that I know what’s in this tiny heart, I’ll never watch another thing he’s on. Good thing 30 Rock was winding down. Scare-Tactics is still on though, which I watched from time to time. NO more!

  34. walter says

oh yes you are the only problem you have is you got caught saying it. another lame apology from someone trying for damage control. boycott 30 rock till he’s gone

  35. Jake says

Awe Tracey, you don’t have any fans in the Gay and Lesbian community anymore. It’s not like you accidently slipped out a n word or f*ggot, you explained why you think gay people choose to be gay and get what they deserved. That’s like me explaining that Black people choose to be black and deserved to be enslaved.

That’s not poor word choice. That’s pure hate. Goodbye Tracey, wish I could say it was fun, but you were never more than a tolerably backdrop to Tina Fey’s wit.

Goodbye TN too, for laughing and applauding this vile nonsense. In light of the bill you just passed banning municipalities from protecting gays, in fact banning the word gay, I’ll skip your state and your state’s products. Pretty sure I can live happily without you.

  36. says

As I said in the first thread when this broke, I have to reserve judgment. I didn’t hear the act myself. “Kevin Rogers said he has a high tolerance for un-PC humor and Morgan went too far!” you scream. “It’s ALL there. What more do you need?” “Gay kids are killing themselves because of the the sh!t Morgan is perpetuating!” “The words are all there in the essay!” And, my favorite, “I always knew Tina Fey wasn’t really a friend of the gays because of the Gays in Space sketch.” Really? LOL. Yeah, Tina Fey, SECRET MAJOR HOMOPHOBE.

You know what words come to mind for me? Context, satire and nuance. And, also, the phrase, “failed attempt at.”

I try to not be reactionary when I remember. I’m also very careful when it comes to choosing to play the victim card.

Eddie Mumford (and a couple of the self-identified gay black men to a lesser extent) is the only person on this thread who has made any sense here.

However, what I find may have been of benefit in this whole thing is that, Kevin Rogers wrote an essay calling Morgan out on a bit that didn’t work, was offensive and, from the sounds of it, did indeed reinforce homophobic, negative stereotypes in the minds of some of the hateful dolts in the audience. Within a week’s time, he has brought it to national attention. And within the last 24 hours, his seven-day-old essay has finally gone viral and Morgan has addressed his behavior and apologized.

For some of you, he’ll always be dead to you and “not funny” (interesting how so many on here didn’t even find him humorous even once in his career), even if he donates all his money to gay causes and nails himself up on a rainbow cross. I doubt that you were a regular viewers of 30 Rock, anyway.

For me, I will keep on watching, because it’s one of the best shows on television.

    And, one more thing …

    I’m Brian Fellows.

  37. says

what happened to Eddie Mumford’s comments on this thread as well the few other comments which didn’t run in-synch with majority of posters here?

  38. Wes says

Vinci Smetana, there is no difference between this and what Michael Richards did. So I’ll assume you were all peachy with him too.

  39. chas says

Heartfelt apology. No way. He’s done this too many times. He has a problem with gay people as does his friend Sherri Shepherd.

  40. Derrick from Philly says

“You know….just because a black person is horribly homophobic doesn’t mean it’s suddenly OK to use racial invective.

There are black people who are gay. And gay people who are black. No-one should have choose a side.”

    Welcome to Towleroad, INVISIBLE-MAN.

Answering homophobic Black folks with racial insults or slurs is a strategy used by either racist or simple-minded White Gay folks. It’s meant to shame Black homophobes for their anti-Gay statements, behavior, actions.

The problem is that the insults are aimed not just at the Black homophobe but at all Black folks.

It’s like saying, “you Blacks ought to know better” or “…you Blacks turn around and oppress another minority after all your years of complaining” or “…how would you Blacks like to be back in slavery if you treat us Gays as second-class citizens?”

That’s the idea behind this strategy: to shame Black homophobes into examining their views and “repenting”. But for those White Gays who are racists it’s simply an excuse to voice their hatred of Black people. They love it.

Instead of offending the Black homophobe they end up offending Black Gay people (the Black homophobes don’t read this blog). But this segment of the White Gay community doesn’t give a damn, and so Black Gays (who visit Towleroad) end up having to respond to the racial insults and racial slurs.

I’ve gotten so used to it, but every now and they I go on a rant as ugly as Tracy Morgan’s anti-Gay crap…except mine is aimed at Gay White supremacists–and, unfortunately, I end up offending innocent White Gay folks in the process.

  41. mcNnyc says

    Come on Guys…
I mean does anyone really think a man would actually kill his own son?
ONLY if he was a homophobic black male who’s son came whining in a f*gg*ty voice about being bullied then HELL YES!….
ONLY IF…but hey friends know what’s in his heart…

  42. says

Thank you for keeping up my repost.

However, I’m confused by Towleroad’s logic in deleting the comments that it did. While there was one comment that was removed which was obviously ugly, ignorant and racist (the quip about ‘what inventions ever came from Africa,’ etc), there were five or six comments (including my first post) I no longer see on this thread whose only thing they had in common is that they didn’t follow rank and file with the uproar on this thread. There was nothing insensitive, hateful or inappropriate about them.

I didn’t think that Towleroad actively engaged in censoring dissent or otherwise. It leaves me, again, disappointed and a little jaded.

  43. says

duh. Now if one of us said the same about Blacks……………….. Time for him to go and go far far way. It seems to be the week for ruining careers–first Weiner’s weiner and them Morgan’s filthy mouth. What an embarrassment to the human race Tracy Morgan is. He actually makes Jason Kirkfield look saintly. Hang it up Morgan , glad to see you go.

  44. Brian says

Too little, too late. The words can’t be unsaid, the damage can’t be undone. I hope no one pays to see this man do anything, ever again. I certainly won’t.

  45. Swine says

I don’t get what’s going on here. Kathy Griffin is a big fan of his, so I figured he was a gay ally. Maybe not? I hope Kathy, Joy, Anderson & Rachel comment on this. If a white person said this stuff & substituted black for gay (s)he would be skewered — as Morgan should be.

  46. Francis says

We can touch on the racial aspect of this, but the reality is, the dude can be purple skinned, the fact is, he’s a homophobe pure and simple, what he said wasn’t a joke, and he completely stepped over the line and therefore needs to be punished accordingly. NBC and Tina Fey need to fire him. That is the only acceptable option at this point.

  47. james Brown says

Yes, I WILL go here… it is the absolute lowest for someone of an oppressed race, religion, or gender to oppress another group of people. To see an African-American male speak so hatefully about gays is repulsive! He is painfully ignorant of the past and what hatred does to our collective humanity.

  48. Ian says

While I support Tracy Morgans 1st amendment right to express his bigotry it doesn’t mean I must support him. With every right comes responsibilities and consequences, good or bad. I can only hope the consequence is that viewership of 30 Rock declines and Tracy is fired as a result. I know I wont be watching anymore, perhaps not any NBC show. It’s my right to change the channel.

  49. walter says

to hell with complaining to nbc remember their new owner is more conservative. complain to the sponsor hit them in the pocket book. companies don;t like investing in controversial programing. especially when money is tight.

  50. Steve Lee says

Unacceptable apology…..and why in the world would you think any of that crap is funny. I was once a fan….but you deserve to have your meaningless apology ignored. So now set out and do something for the gay community until it hurts, over and over.
    What an ignorant fool.

  51. jamal49 says

Yeah, Towleroad does this all the time. I commented on a vicious racist comment with logic and it was removed. I sometimes think this site has its favorites and if you aren’t “in”, then you’re “out”. Oh well. TR’s loss is someone else’s gain.

  52. Attmay says

I have a “choice of words” for you, Miss Thang, and I’m sure you’ll really love them, but I’ll keep them to myself because unlike you, I’m a decent human being.
