Gay Cuban Man to Marry Transgender Woman as Birthday Present for Fidel Castro

Iriepa_estrada

A gay man is set to marry a transgender woman in Cuba on August 13 in Havana, on Fidel Castro's birthday, to send a message to the leader who persecuted gays and lesbians at the beginning of his revolution, Latin American Herald Tribune reports:

Cuba Wendy Iriepa, a 37-year-old who underwent a sex-change operation in 2007 on the island, and Ignacio Estrada, a 31-year-old gay man who is seropositive, will marry in an open ceremony that they hope will mark a “before and an after” in Cuba with dissident blogger Yoani Sanchez as matron of honor.

“We met on May 13 of this year and we always intended to get married three months later,” Estrada – who considers himself gay but had fallen in love with Wendy, now a woman – said.

But the couple also decided to tie the knot on the “controversial” date of Aug. 13 to coincide with Castro’s 85th birthday and emphasize the “gigantic” step their union will signify for the island’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual, or LGBT, community.

Castro, in an interview a year ago, acknowledged the homophobic persecution gays and lesbians suffered in Cuba at the beginning of his revolution, and he admitted his responsibility for not paying “enough attention” to the deed that he called a “great injustice,” Estrada said.

Reuters adds: "The couple has scheduled their free, state-authorized nuptial ceremony at an official 'wedding palace' in Havana, complete with cases of beer courtesy of the socialist state."

  1. I fail to see why a heterosexual wedding would be considered a "gigantic step", but to each his own, I suppose.

  2. Hey, Rick,

I think Andy posted this story especially for you. How more masculine can a Gay man get--marrying a Transwoman. Machismo! Real balls, hunh, baby?

I wonder if the "socialist state" will reimburse her for the cost of a strap on?

  3. So upsetting really. Castro's Cuba deemed homosexuality a punishable offense yet will pay for gender reassignment surgery, further blurring the lines between the already incorrect assumption that homosexuality is a gender issue rather than a natural state.

The groom is seropositive, and the bride-to-be had to be "reassigned" so they could be legally recognized. Just what kind of message are they sending? Hedwig and the Angry Inch is alive and well in Cuba?

  5. I'm sorry- but what does setopositive mean in this context? I've looked up the definition and it's extremely vague. If the guy is HIV positive why not just say so? Why bother with the odd, relatively obscure term "seropositive"?

  6. What's up with this stunt? Is this a loveless marriage? Why bother?

Castro is a dead man walking. His niece is very pro gay rights.

That said, the Cuban government is barely hanging on because of lack of hard currency. The Russians stopped funding it. Venezuela's Chavez is dying of cancer and with his death will probably go the petrodollars that have added some support.

Castro has allowed for the creation of a racist tourist industry that excludes the Cuba's majority black population from working in it. The little money that brings in is suffering with the rest of the global recession.

Realistically, the Castro brothers will die off in the next 10 years. Then look out. The Castros have done little to bring the black majority into government. Why would they continue to support a racist minority led autocracy? Of course, the Cuban exile community, which is largely white, will want to return. I'm sure that they'll be in for a surprise when they aren't welcomed with open arms.

  7. I'm not prepared to accept that Ignacio is a Gay man just because he's claiming to be. At any rate, Gay men marrying women is not progress. Transwomen having "gender reassignment" instead of accepting their Transgender bodies as natural, that isn't progress, either. Fidel Castro won't give a sh*t what these two do, and their wedding won't make anybody on the island of Cuba more free. I think Wendy and Ignacio just wanted some cheap, National Enquirer-style publicity.

  8. I've said this before, and I'll say it again: WTF is it with 'Latino' men [in 'Latin' America] and the huge number of trannies down there? And why is it [apparently] more socially acceptable for a gay man in Latin America to act like a chick?

  9. So they "always intended" to marry three months after they met? There is so much wrong and just plain strange about this story.

  10. This news was allover the top rated gay sites. Seems like Latino men are made to be gay....or at least that's the general impression.
