1. I'm Layla Miller I Know Stuff says

The letter of the law versus the spirit of the law

The letter of the law versus the spirit of the law is an idiomatic antithesis. When one obeys the letter of the law but not the spirit, one is obeying the literal interpretation of the words (the “letter”) of the law, but not the intent of those who wrote the law. Conversely, when one obeys the spirit of the law but not the letter, one is doing what the authors of the law intended, though not adhering to the literal wording.

“Law” originally referred to legislative statute, but in the idiom may refer to any kind of rule. Intentionally following the letter of the law but not the spirit may be accomplished through exploiting technicalities, loopholes, and ambiguous language. Following the letter of the law but not the spirit is also a tactic used by oppressive governments.

  2. dc20008 says

Bloody mess? Is she threatening violence??? Is a Christian threatening violence???????

  3. Sargon Bighorn says

Gallagher is a Right Wing Ultra Conservative that sees a threat in anyone not like her. Now she uses terms like bloody mess!!! Can you say Norway July 2011.

  4. Abel says

Maggie Moo tries to come across as the sweetest lady imaginable. The hateful old sow should only choke on her own bile. Yes, put it to a vote, Maggie. Good thing they didn’t put Women’s Suffrage, Desegregation and Interracial Marriage to a vote because NONE of them would have passed. This is why we DON’T leave civil rights up to a vote. Right now, in this day and age, given the hostility toward Islam in our nation (somewhat understandable, after all), what if we put the rights of Muslims to a vote? I can just see zealots whipping up a frenzy and the rights of Muslims being eliminated. Zealots like Maggie and her troop of goons are doing this to gays.

Maggie, if there is any justice, you’ll answer to God for your evil-doing someday.

  5. says

LOL “thousands turned out to protest”? I saw a handful! How come they have no photos of those thousands? Perhaps they were confused by thousands attending weddings?

  6. Max says

    It’s “gonna be a bloody mess”…

    Like in Oslo?

These things don’t just happen out of nowhere. There are always clues. The DOJ needs to investigate these people ASAP.

  7. says

America is awesome. We put a man on the moon, put robots on Mars and now, we’ve taught a hog to wear clothes and talk. Brilliant!

  8. Disgusted American says

America is awesome. We put a man on the moon, put robots on Mars and now, we’ve taught a hog to wear clothes and talk. Brilliant!

    Hysterical!!!! Good one! Right On!

  9. Bart says

Maggie has half right, she’s a mess.

She’s becoming this featureless blob of Jabba the Hutness with a whiny, poor me timber in her voice.

Take it to the people, Maggie, and you’ll have nothing to stand on. The majority of the people either don’t care or truly hate what you stand for. This woman does her side a huge disservice, that’s why I hope she’s always the spokesperson. She’s dislikable, shrewish, and her unattractiveness seems to shine from within.

She’s like this old, sad, mopey dinasour that hasn’t quite caught on that the meteor already hit.

  10. bkmn says

    Fact number 1:

Maggie Gallagher and Brian Brown will do whatever they can to keep the money rolling in to support their expense accounts.

That is what their fight is about now, they know they are losing the bigger battle.

Lies, misrepresentations and flaws are all that is left.

  11. pdxblueyes says

Bloody Mess? Is there a threat of violence attached in the undertones of this message? Is this enough to have someone from the department of justice look into this? Norway didn’t just “happen”… She’s crazy – but now, she’s CRAZY scary…

  12. bobsmart2 says

I just can’t come up with words to respond to Ms Gallagher. I do believe that if there is a God, she will be answerable to him for spewing such hate and venom.

And to use terms like “Bloody mess” in these times is the same to me as yelling “Fire” in a crowded theater.

My question is: Is NOM a tax-exempt organization? If it is then how can she be dealing in politics and keep the tax-exempt status?

I don’t know much about NOM, but maybe it is time to do some research.

  13. lessthan says

Some things that that stood out in this video. The newscaster’s emphasis on the National Organization ->for<- Marriage. Maggie’s emphasis on the races that showed up for her rallies. Weird stuff.

  14. Judy Is A Punk says

Maggie’s a hungry hungry hippo. The bloody mess she’s talking about must be her big T-bone steak she’ll consume prior to her dinner. Eat it Maggie, eat it.

  15. Gary says

Oh i must have clicked the wrong link. I thought this was the Planet Of The Apes trailer, but its actually The Blob.

  16. She has a snout! says

Her trainer must be very pleased. She didn’t oink once during the whole interview!

  17. says

I don’t know what I find more appalling, her resemblance to Michael Meyers or the fact that she thinks she has to right to usurp people’s constitutional rights to believe in something other than her misguided and wicked religious beliefs.

  18. Greg says

30 comments, and nearly all of them are fat jokes.

As much as it might be entertaining to join in the fun, I’ll sit this one out. Instead, I think we should reflect hard on the events of Norway this past week in light of a comment such as hers. We have come so far, yet there are lots of people out there who would love to do us harm, or worse, especially now. What is most disturbing about her veiled threat of bloodshed is the fact that a few days ago a post here about self-defense was taken as a political argument and rejected by commentary as indicative of a Republican mindset. We need to quit thinking that defending ourselves is some abhorrent, difficult thing to do.

Think hard about what sort of table is currently set. We’re exposing more of ourselves in public situations than ever before, those who would do us harm are very angry, and the decision to familiarize ourselves with state gun laws and conceal/carry laws and defend ourselves physically cannot be swept aside in a volatile environment like this. Take self-defense classes. Carry. Protect each other and yourselves. And of course, keep speaking out, but watch your backs.

  19. Michael says

Read that her crew bus bused in from New Jersey. The reason: getting the minorities in the press with her gives them (NOM) the appearance of the “coalition of faiths and greed’s” for the next umbrella commercial.

  20. says

Her language is so full of crap: soundbites and gotchas (I love “Republican elites”). She’s anything but authentic and truthful.

And yes, “bloody mess” days after Oslo is horrid.

  21. says

they are mentally Ill , self righteous, Fascists hiding behind religion as it has ALWAYS proven to be a free pass and used by the most soulless manipulators of the undereducated …. A POX upon their houses !

  22. MAP says

I’ve been saying this for over a year..Maggie Gallagher Srivastav needs to investigated and exposed as the craud she is…. We MUST start hitting her with the question of where is her husband Raman. Most of those who are familiar with her on the right only know her as Maggie Gallagher..the ood Catholic.. but once they find out she was knocked up at 22 and has a bastard son and she is married to a Hindu rather then a Coatholic they will see her as the fraud she is..They have been duped by NOM and the Catholic Church…The bigger question to is Why aren’t we hearing anything from the Mormon Church??? They are the ones that started all ofthis and it’s just as Fred Kargee discovered in the secret documents for the Mormon Church he was able o obtain..The Mormons started this and got others involved and now they are backing away and funneling money to those organizations who are up front and fighting against SSM.

  23. walter says

it is time to start investigating the source of money spent by these hate groups. if it ties to churches then they are political organizations and should be taxed.

  24. prophet says

I really must try and restrain myself, before I publish something I shouldn’t. Let me just say this, I have never felt such disgust and raw hatred toward anyone in my life as I feel toward this wretched excuse for a human being.

  25. MikeInSanJose says

Is she just pissed that no hot lesbians WANT her? If she would just put down the quarter pounder for an hour or two and look in the mirror, I’m sure she would figure out the problem. I’m guessing it really doesn’t have anything to do with all the other people getting married in this country. It probably isn’t even only because of her horrid choice of HR Office barbie clothes (though that may be a significantly contributing factor).

  26. romeo says

She gets fatter everytime I see her. That said, she knows there’s zero chance to get this repealed. If it’s thrown to a vote, California style, marriage equality will still win, and I believe putting it to a vote is not an option in NY. The woman just needs to park herself at Hometown Buffet and eat until she explodes.

  27. Rowan says

Okay we get she’s fat. Now, anyone have anything constructive to say about who is feeding these millions against gay marriage?

  28. Superman says

The only bloody mess will be the one that Margarine makes when someone finally tips this cow over. Or when a freight train punches it while it’s grazing across the tracks. In any event, it’s time to smack this ruminant down…and anyone else who dares try to take away our rights and dignity. NOW!

  29. NY2.0 says

I would like to know who Mr. Srivastav is. Does anyone have information on the person who would dare to marry this vile excuse for a human being?

  30. MerlynHerne says

Keep an eye on someone who uses this kind of language. I can see this whole thing getting violent, given the hatred of this sort and her followers of GLBT People.

  31. says

Having a hard time reconcile how a woman who bore a child out of wedlock can cast stones at anybody, especially from the religious podium. Someone in her shoes was fabled to have worn the Scarlet Letter for life for doing what she did.

It seems ironic that now she, instead of wearing her Letter quietly, slathers those who mean her no harm with her hate. What she is so afraid of?

Also, she didn’t marry and then have her child…She has no standing to represent the ‘christian’ institution of marriage.

  32. Attmay says

She should go back to her old job breaking through brick walls and shouting “Oh yeah!”

Margaret Srivastav is so fat she fell and love and broke it.

Margaret Srivastav is so fat she jumped in the air and got stuck.

Margaret Srivastav is so fat she sat on a rainbow and skittles popped out.

Margaret Srivastav is so fat her dress size is in scientific notation.

Margaret Srivastav is so fat Southwest Airlines made her buy three tickets.

Margaret Srivastav is so fat her home movies had to be shot in IMAX.

Obesity is a choice. Homosexuality is not.

  33. Matt26 says

I still don’t understand, why can’t she accept the fact gays love and want to marry and be happy for them!?

  34. Ed says

What I found telling was how pleasant and positive the clip of the newly married lesbian couple was. It is my sincere hope that as more of CBN’s viewers see what a good thing this is, that they will direct their donations elsewhere. Furthermore, picking on the sad fat lady, who doesn’t have a Sassy Gay Friend to help her with her wardrobe is really beneath us at this point. Let us continue to use reason and civility, and our cause will win out.

  35. cytyger says

Obesity is not always a choice. I know many women who are her size or larger that happily stand with the LGBT community. Using her looks as some slight against her is as fake as the lies she tells about us. It’s not what goes into her mouth that makes her a vile human being, it’s what comes out of it.

  36. J H Robbins says

What this woman and her ilk do not understand is that they don’t have a chance anymore. We are fighting for our rights and that is always stronger than someone trying to take them away. Their minions will tire of this fight eventually (it’s happening already), but we won’t tire until we are equal in everything. Anyway, someone needs to tell them this.

  37. Ed Meiller says

Oh.. was that an interview? I thought it was another clip from the apes movie. I’m glad I live in Canada. Our conservetives seem to have accepted same sex marriage.

  38. gregory brown says

All of these proposed efforts to undo what’s done waste huge amounts of money that could be used better. Instead of attacking SSM equality, why doesn’t NOM use its resources to do positive things to bolster and strengthen hetero-marriages, which have such a dismal success rate? Seems to me that would be a properly christian thing to do.

  39. Dave says

We need to talk to ALL the residents of the state of NY. They must be made to see that the rights of a minority are at risk of being eliminated due to a popular vote. It is all well and good for us to say that here. What is far more important is to take this argument to the public. Remind them in every venue and at every occasion that women’s right to vote, slavery, inter-racial marriage all would be in jeopardy if they were held to a popular vote. Remind them it is how we treat a minority, NOT how the majority rules, that avoids mob rule. Fairness and justice for all is what democracy is all about.

  40. Darren says

    @Mike… YES!!!! :)

thank you for the Edna voice today čśÇ I needed the laugh…

As for Maggie.. I thought Congress said she was no longer going to speak out publicly on this issue due to threats of violence to her and her family????

    Doesn’t this act constitute perjury?

  41. Shelly says

Last year at this time I weighed at least as much as Maggie does and have struggled with my weight my entire life. I have since gotten treatment for the underlying psychological conditions that were driving my compulsive overeating and weigh half as much as I did — getting pretty close to “normal” for my height. But I do know how painful and difficult this degree of obesity can be, and the deep unhappiness driving it. So, I really recoil at the cavalcade of fat jokes here. There is plenty to dislike about Maggie’s words and deeds without the need to stoop to cheap shots.

My reaction to her, and George Rekers, Marcus Bachmann, Phyllis Schaffly, et al, is that these are all clearly deeply miserable people inside their own bodies and lives, and unfortunately they feel driven to try and undermine other people’s happiness in order to make themselves feel like their lives are worthwhile and their choices and beliefs validated. It’s a hellish vicious circle of self-delusion that would be merely pathetic if their inner turmoil weren’t inflicting harm on so many others. And the darkside of this unprecedented era of communication and networking is that people like this are increasingly able to reach out to other similarly troubled souls, gang together more and more, and increase their own power and ability to seriously mess with others. And yes, as we see over and over again, sometimes profoundly sick individuals latch onto this kind of rhetoric and get so lost in it they are driven to commit atrocities.

I disapprove of her words and actions as much as anybody here, but I do think trying to understand where people like this are coming from and thoughtfully considering how to respond and how best to counter them is a better strategy than name-calling and dismissing them with simplistic terms like “bigot” and “hater.” Black and white thinking is the problem, not the solution.

  42. Villageboy13 says

This woman reminds me of Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter, in both look and demeanor: “[Umbridge] is a short, squat woman who resembles a large pale toad, with short, mouse-brown hair. She speaks with a quiet, childish, high-pitched voice, and she loves kittens and other cute things. She has a tendency to speak to people in a very condescending tone, as if they are simpletons or very young children.”

  43. Grant says

“Science teaches men to fly airplanes…Religion teaches men to fly airplanes into buildings.”

  44. walter says

do you know why she married a hindu. they won’t kill cows and consider them sacred. she wouldn’t want her husband to kill her in her sleep.

  45. kodiak says

Shelly, thank you for your post. Interesting and illuminating. Personal and profound.

  46. Scott Amundsen says

“A bloody mess.” Really, Maggie? That sounds suspiciously like a threat to me. Tell me, which law enforcement agency should I notify? Making terroristic threats is a crime.

  47. paul says

Okay…first of all…what the hell business is this of hers. Seriouly, her organization is budding into the New York State’s business. does she even understand how the legistlature work the state of New York…this cannot be overturned by referendum. it is a done deal…get over it and move on!!

  48. Matt Deveaux says

As much as I’m not a fan of fat jokes…

    I don’t hate her because she’s fat… she’s fat because I hate her.

  49. Randy says

When she talks about a Bloody Mess, does she ever stop to think that the ‘Bloody Mess’ might be “her” blood and mess spewing out of her on the sidewalk. With the hate that comes out of her, it’s a wonder it hasn’t already happened. If she was laying on the sidewalk with her head blown off, I’d step right over and let the devil take her soul. Oops, he already has it. My bad!

  50. agcons says

She looks even more like someone picked up a volleyball, used a felt pen to draw facial features on it, then slapped a cheap wig on top.

  51. Just_a_guy says

The next time a real journalist talks to her, she should be asked:

Is it true that you were not a virgin, Margaret srivastaz? Don’t you know that the bible says you should be stoned?!!!

Btw, love the science taught people to fly airplanes / religion taught people to fly them into buildings quote.

So thoroughly true of today’s Muslim and “Christian” hater-dominated “churches.”

Her husband needs to be exposed. How can she concern herself with others’ marriages if hers is in a shamble!!!

And “for marriAge” sure seems to me like blatantly misleading commercial speech.

Nom sure as heck better get zero tax shelters for being “religious.” and it’s wrong that mormon tax-exempt money is being filtered to this national org against marriage– as I’m sure it must be… Mormons with any sense should be embarrassed and ashamed of their church. Unfortunately, not enough of them are… Yet.

  52. Just_a_guy says

Hey, so I somehow didn’t know TOO much about norway recent Events…

It IS shocking and offensive to now hear Margaret Srivastaz (Goblin Gallagher) calling for the right here in the u.s. to commit a bloodbath.

But Maggie never did like humanity, only the ghastly religiofascist control of humanity on which she makes her living, scrounges together her jetsetting lifestyle and too many steak dinners. Sorry, but the lowliest sad-state Santa Monica hooker has more dignity and humanity than Mrs.? Srivastaz. (I guess I just don’t understand how she can be so committed to opposing legal recognitions of my very status as human…)

  53. Yeek says

Bart! Shame on you. What a terrible, mean-spirited, cruel thing that is to say about Jabba the Hutt
