NC Lawmaker Compares Same-Sex Marriage to Polygamy, Incest at Presser Calling for Anti-Gay Amendment: VIDEO

North Carolina Speaker Pro Tempore Dale Folwell and House Majority Leader Paul Stam held a press conference today to discuss their desire to place a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, WSOC reports:

"We need to put the decision to the people so that they can define what marriage is, and not us," Speaker Pro Tempore Dale Folwell, R-Forsyth, said at a news conference. "Why shouldn't the people of North Carolina have the right to vote on something as important as this issue?"

State law already defines a valid marriage as one "created by the consent of a male and female person," and a 1996 state law says same-sex marriages sanctioned in other states are invalid in North Carolina. House Majority Leader Paul Stam, R-Wake, said etching the ban in the constitution would protect the law from legal challenges.

The presser presented the opportunity  for "narrow-minded, backward-looking and mean-spirited ignorance of the lowest order," Progressive Pulse writes:

 According to Stam:

If same sex marriage is allowed, it will lead ”next” to legalized “adult incest” and polygamous marriages since there’s no way to argue logically for same sex marriage and against state authorization of those other practices; “Morality” and “biology” dictate that same sex marriage be proscribed; Sexual orientation is a “choice.”; Same sex marriage will prove disastrous for all of our children and society generally because it will lead to the inevitable demise of marriage as an institution.; and All social science” demonstrates that it’s best to be raised in a marriage that features one man and one woman.

Said Stam, according to OnTop:

When asked by a reporter whether the amendment was “a reach of government into the individuals' lives?” Stam answered: “Well 90 percent of all laws affect people's lives, so that's an argument without any content to it. … We prohibit adult incest, we prohibit polygamy. What would be their answer to that? We're involved in people's lives. That's a slogan without analysis.”

  1. Stam is a fundamentalist fanatic. He is a Christianist Nazi who has been trying to make his brand of crazy Evangelical Bible thumping the law of North Carolina all his life. The man is a political horror story! Hate monger par excellance.

  2. I actually don't read the text of what these people say; I just add them to the list. So far, these guys seem like they want to jump the queue and be the next folks caught with a rentboy in their room.

  5. Ted Olson's interview with Chris Wallace is a great primer on how to discuss the point/counterpoint about this issue...

  6. I'm sorry to say I live in NC, one of the states in the Bigot Belt. As our Governor is fond of saying "It is what it is." But I think more appropriately as she remarked over the weekend "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst."

  7. I don't get why people can't figure out that their bible is what promotes incest and polygamy. If one believes in the bible, they have to understand the children of Adam and Eve at the very least were having sex with each other and polygamy is very common in the bible.

  11. "If same sex marriage is allowed, it will lead 'next' to legalized 'adult incest' and polygamous marriages since there’s no way to argue logically for same sex marriage and against state authorization of those other practices..."

    Wow, really? Let's see...

Same sex marriage does not create genetically inbred children like incest nor does it violate the rights of one mother/child in a family over another (divorce in polygamous marriage has a whole nest of legal issues). Not to mention that both practices are against the current laws on the books NATIONALLY whereas being gay and married to your partner is not against the law in many states.

There's even more arguments one could make for same sex marriage and against incest and polygamy, but why bother? These a**hats have their heads shoved much too far up their rears to hear it. I guess logic just flies out the window when you're dealing with the Rabid Right.

Once immigration and tax laws of each state run up against the wall of same sex marriage enough times in higher courts, the fed is going to eventually have to step in and negate all the stupid, backward states' laws against marriage equality, because eventually they're going to see that there's too many instances where state and federal law don't agree. And federal law trumps state law any time it wants to, (see: feds busting up state-sanctioned marijuana growers.)

At some point, it will want to.

  13. Consent is a very difficult concept for Christians to grasp. They have always forced their beliefs on people on threat of physical harm - either in this life or the next.

  14. Does this amendment have a good chance of passing? What can we do to help stop this measure?

  16. How can gay marriage lead to polygamy? On the contrary, gay marriage is about monogamy. It affirms monogamy.

  17. By "put[ting] the decision to the people so that they can define what marriage is," they mean that they're going to have two ballot measures, one defining marriage as a union between two adults and one defining marriage as only between a man and a woman, right? If not, they're not really letting the people decide. It's like asking someone if they still beat their wife.

  18. What these phoney "christians" don't realize is that hetero polygamy was NEVER condemned in the old testament where most of the anti-gay, anti-women rants emanate from. Incest of course had to have started with the mythical Adam & Eve creationist fable. Fundamentalists believe they were the first parents of the human race and therefore, must also acknowledge that incest must have taken place for the planet to have become populated. Try telling that to them and they go into a hissy fit. I do it just to piss them off. Another couple to throw at them is that the old testament condones the killing of one's wife for adultery and children for insolence. They conveniently dismiss or ignore that of course. They're all a bunch of low information phoneys as are most republican tea party bagger scum including civil libertarians.

  19. Folks, I'm a little tired of reading comments that purport to bash anti-marriage equality bigots as closet cases ("they look like lovers," "Stam is the top," "caught with a rentboy," etc.). Uh, isn't that homophobic, self-hating name-calling? It does NOTHING to advance the cause and only makes pro-marriage equality supporters come across as petty. Many "make fun" of Michele Bachmann's husband because he "looks gay." It's not funny; it's tired.
