Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is First Republican to Sign on To Legislation Repealing DOMA

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) is the first Republican to sign on to sponsor legislation repealing the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the Log Cabin Republicans report in a press release:

"Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen has long been on the frontlines in fighting for human dignity at home and abroad. As a founding member of the House LGBT Equality Caucus she has been a reliable ally and leader time and again on legislation to secure freedom and fairness for all Americans. Log Cabin Republicans are grateful that she has once again stepped forward as an inclusive leader by co-sponsoring the Respect for Marriage Act," said R. Clarke Cooper, Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director. "Marriage is a fundamental right of all Americans. The so-called Defense of Marriage Act ("DOMA") is an offense to the core conservative principles of liberty and federalism. It has been repudiated by its author, former Congressman Bob Barr (R-GA), and is rejected by a growing majority of Americans. It is time that our law respected all marriages. There is much work to be done to make that dream a reality, but with Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen's leadership, marriage equality is on the horizon."

Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen said, "I'm pleased to join the Log Cabin Republicans in our fight for marriage equality. I co-sponsored the repeal of DOMA because I firmly believe that equality is enshrined in our constitution and in our great democracy."

  1. Paul says

I dont agree with many republicans but we can’t fight this without them. If only most of them weren’t such a bunch of arrogant mean bastards it would be easier to work with them on issues….

Her second surname Lehtinen indicates to Finland. North Europe is more liberal than parts of US where reps usually have majority.

  3. BABH says

    Actually, Matt, she’s Cuban-American.

Her district includes South Beach, Miami, so it’s hardly surprising that she’s gay-friendly.

  4. Janice says

    Great news!
I have never been in any doubt that there are Republicans out there who believe in doing the right thing. There are some who believe in equality for all. Well done Rep. Ros-Lehtinen for having the courage to be the first to take action.
Now come on the rest of you……stand with your colleagues and let’s get this done!

Can’t believe the people of South Beach would elect a Thug–sympathetic to gay issues or not. I see she supports Log Cabinners. Doesn’t say much about supporting non-Thug gays, though.

  6. Mike Triggs says

This is only going to happen with support from both sides of the aisle. Someone has to be first Congrats to the Congresswoman!

I don’t expect any of our Republican Congressmen from Arizona to follow her lead…unless it would be Jeff Flake who is running for the US Senate. He did break with the Party and support repeal of DADT.

  7. alguien says

she’s pretty hard right in most respects but she’s been consistently supportive of marriage equality. she was on “real time with bill maher” several years ago voicing her undying support for the war in iraq in one breath and speaking out in favor of marriage equality in the next.

  8. Jollysocks says

Seems small but we will need her and other like-minded Republicans (come out of the closet!) If the Dems lose big time in 2012, we are going to need to know who the pro-equality Republicans are in order to stall a constitutional amendment against marriage equality. If the GOP takes back the White House and they get high enough numbers in the the Senate and House — there will be a constitutional amendment. The Dems will be absolutely powerless to stop something like that.
