Minnesota Catholic Bishop Nienstedt Asks State’s Catholics to Recite Anti-Gay ‘Marriage Prayer’ at Mass

Virulent anti-gay Twin Cities Archbishop John Nienstedt, the guy who spearheaded a mass mailing last year of 400,000 anti-gay DVDs, has created a special "marriage prayer" which he is asking the state's Catholics to recite during Mass in an effort to create support for the anti-gay amendment on Minnesota's ballot in November 2012.

NienstedtHere is Nienstedt's prayer:

Heavenly Father,

Through the powerful intercession of the Holy Family, grant to this local Church the many graces we need to foster, strengthen, and support faith-filled, holy marriages and holy families.

May the vocation of married life, a true calling to share in your own divine and creative life, be recognized by all believers as a source of blessing and joy, and a revelation of your own divine goodness.

Grant to us all the gift of courage to proclaim and defend your plan for marriage, which is the union of one man and one woman in a lifelong, exclusive relationship of loving trust, compassion, and generosity, open to the conception of children.

We make our prayer through Jesus Christ, who is Lord forever and ever. Amen.

Earlier this year, Nienstedt instructed every priest in the state to push for passage of the amendment. This appears to be another component of his evil plot.

  1. Brendan says

I’m surprised the bishop didn’t add something about having “compassion” for those unfortunate unmarried gay Catholics who must “suffer in silence” because they aren’t heterosexual.

  2. michaelofthegreen says

I love how he feels that, in the prayer, he needs to explain to God what His plan is for marriage. Just in case you forgot, God, here’s what your plan is.

  3. Steve Scarborough says

Oh, puke. I was raised Catholic and a lot of it is still in my DNA. But how about let’s yank the monster tax exemption that’s afforded these lace-clad politicians?

  4. MikeBoston says

If any other organization put this in their mission statement, the would be categorized as a hate group.

I hope that any gay member of the church reads this ‘prayer’ and internalizes the message.

  5. candideinnc says

I have a feeling that there will be a lot of very angry parishioners who will walk out of mass if they try to put this prayer into the ceremony. This may be a bridge too far for the bishops. Lots of Catholics have gay family members. They are becoming more, rather than less sympathetic with calls for civil rights for gays, and resent the bishops’ bigotry on our issues. To ask these family members to join in on the hate prayer may not go over very well. I don’t think my family members will fall in line.

  6. Paul B. says

This is the same church that made me an outcast to my italian catholic family for the last 35 years. Wow, I can’t imagine how wonderful it must feel to be my parents and say this lovely “prayer”…indoctrinating catholics to the power of hate. The good news is that for me, the pain is gone…but for my parents, thanks to the catholic church…they live in pain every day.

  7. KP says

When New York passed gay marraige, something like 65% of all Catholics agreed with the new law. In general, Catholics are more in favor of gay rights and marraige than Protestants. The Catholic Church itself needs to realize its members are not as hateful and bigoted as the church leaders. I imagine for a lot of Catholics this might be a step too far.

  8. Caliban says

I sincerely hope the Catholics who DON’T agree with this schmuck, which according to polls is the majority of them, don’t just let this pass and tell Nienstedt to shove his prayer up his *ss.

How ridiculous is it to believe that a nun or priest or Bishop or Cardinal or Pope is something other than just another person who happens to be a functionary in a religious bureaucracy, that they are more “holy” than you and actually a conduit to God? (I mean aside from the already silly religious mumbo jumbo.) Umm, the fact the Catholic church decided a long time ago to protect its own reputation, interests, and property instead of protecting their parishioners from sexual abusers should have been a huge whopping clue about exactly how “holy” they really are!

  9. Rob says

First, unbelievable that this church is still tyirng to pretend it can just ignore its own mess and tell others how to behave.

Second. Garbage like this is why I’m glad to call myself a recovering catholic. The hierarchy of this organization long ago lost touch and credibility with their parishoners over divorce, birth control, abortion, etc – to say nothign of the sex abuse scandals. The majority of even practicing catholics live their lives and ignore the church edicts. I can remember my father, not the most liberal man in the world, saying of priests, “How can these guys who have no idea what life is like, tell people how they should live their lives?”

  10. redball says

I hope that the ‘God’ he so professes in smites him into the ground & burns his church into ashes.

‘I’VE HAD ENOUGH! This is my prayer: that I’ll die livin’ just as free as my hair!’

  11. says

Didn’t they have this same prayer about lonely old women flying through the air on broomsticks whom they called “witches” ?

And if I recall the next step was the publication of “Malleus Mallficiarum “…and a lot of burnings.

Learned a lot lately , you papist tossers ?

  12. Urmensch says

Ah, Prayer. How to do nothing and still think you’re helping.

It would be fine by me if they confined themselves to hurling imprecations into the uncaring void. It’s when they seek legal support for their bigotries that I worry about.

  13. Robert in NYC says

The Catholic cult is morally bankrupt. How hypocritical and bigoted of them given its almost 2 millenia old tradition of pedophilia, pederasty and misogyny. It should be shut down, its assets confiscated, sold and the proceeds distributed to those it claims to help, ergo the poor and disenfranchised in keeping with the teaching of their leader, Jesus Christ. They’re NO christians in any way shape or form.

  14. says

    Back to the burnings;
    back to the Inquisition;
    back to the Crusades against the Muslims; back to their gobeldy gook about Limbo; back to the unbaptised not being buried in holy ground;
    back to these Bishops and their famous fascist salute outside the cathedral at Burgos;
    back to their mumbo-jumbo apparitions…….

….and we should listen to this ?
and they should have the temerity to express any judgment on our lives ?

I have said it many times on this blog:
“Who will rid me of this turbulent priest ?”

  15. CPT_Doom says

“…your plan for marriage, which is the union of one man and one woman in a lifelong, exclusive relationship of loving trust, compassion, and generosity, open to the conception of children.”

    1) Mr. Nienstedt just declared that all marriages of post-menopausal women are invalid, as are all marriages of those previously divorced (except Newt, of course, ’cause he probably provided some baubles from Tiffany’s to shut up the leaders of this “church” and get his double annulment), and all those married by JPs and judges outside of a church. Wonder when he’ll start advocating for legislation to make those relationships illegal.

    2) Why is it that any LGBT person, or any person who believes in the equality of LGBT people, allows this SOB to function in society? I mean, even an “Archbishop” (as a former Catholic I no longer accept either the titles of the Catholic leadership or alleged privileges those titles allegedly include) has to go to stores, restaurants, barber shops, etc. If you are in MN and this SOB comes into your store, throw him out. If you’re eating at a restaurant and he arrives, insist the manager throw him out and, if the manager won’t, loudly end your meal, declaring you can’t eat near a bigot. It is long past the time that people like this should be shunned by all decent human beings.

  16. most holy addendum says

p.s. Lord, Keep sending us fresh batches of young adolescent boys to help us carry out your plans, as it was in the beginning, is now, and every shall be. Amen, and don’t forget the boys O Lord.

  17. RiccoRicco says

Is the eternal glory of Jesus Christ really so precariously imperiled that he must rely on the nefarious political contrivances of Bishop Nienstedt to protect his Crown from gay people?

  18. candide001 says

So what are the pro-equality forces in MN doing to combat this? Not much? Putting together lame ads with straight allies or non threatening lesbian couples? The kind of ads that lose every time? They need to start aggressively addressing the lies and the bigotry point by point. They need to start exposing the evil theocratic anti-gay agenda of these monsters, lie by filthy lie.

  19. Rich says

Promoting marriage without contraception is how the Catholic Church grows its numbers. And let’s face it their numbers are dwindling fast. Just more of the same old nonsense. I wish I had a nickle for every priest who’s come on to me, so I can tell you this really isn’t going to fly. Is she wearing a pink dress this late in the season? Puleze girly!

  20. says

GREAT COMMENTS, my friends! It’s hard to contribute anything more, except this:
When are LGBTs going to go beyond WORDS to ACTION? The R.C. hierarchy’s response to talk is “Sticks and stone will hurt our bones, but names will never hurt us.”
When we cease being on the defensive and go on the OFFENSIVE, by going public with EVERYTHING that is wrong with their church, and not just the pedophilia stuff – which is just the tip of the iceberg – these bishops will wish that they had never awaken the LGBT community!

  21. stanJames says

the vatican in 1933 concluded a treaty with hitler. It gave the church religious freedom in return for not opposing the nazis.

the result can be seen in the website

Similar treaties were concluded with Fascist Italy and the fascist dictator, Franco, whom the church supported during the spanish civil war, 1936-1939

If thats not enough, in 2009, Pope Benedict UNexcommunicated a bishop Willliamson. He is an extremist right wing bishop previously kicked out of the catholic church some years ago.

He is a holocaust denier / minimizer.

Benedict was drafted into the German army’s hitler youth corp in the early 1940s. It appears he learned his lessons well.

Its also rumored that Williamson has 600,000 followers. The Vaticans tithe from that scoundrels followers will serve it well in continuing to try and hide its endless molestation of children all over the world.

Just google “(country name) – catholic church molestation.”

  22. stanJames says

Of course the church opposed gay marriage – in general gays dont procreate and produce more children for the church priests to molest and to poison their minds.

  23. jack says

unfortunately john nienstedt is probably just another garden variety closeted homosexual preacher trying to deal with his homosexual urges. How many times have we discovered that those who rant against homosexuality are themselves gay. It is a sad situation. On the bright side, he does look pretty in pink or lavender or purple or whatever FABULOUS color his glad rags are.

  24. Jerry6 says

Hey!!! What happened to the separation of Church and State? If that bigot wants to get his followers to pray against Gays marrying in his State, then he can pay taxes for the privilege.

  25. Lee says

Because he used the facilities of a tax-exempt “religious” institution to electioneer, they should have their tax exemption removed. But he sure is pretty in pink.

  26. jamal49 says

So, Miss Archbishop, where’s the prayer for the victims of sexual abuse your church perpetrated for centuries on innocent children?

Reminds me of a punch line of an old joke (ethnic-oriented) about a discussion between a Catholic and a priest regarding sex and marriage. “If you don’t play the game, you don’t make the rules!”

  27. Dearcomrade says

People like this guy are really no different than the Taliban. If they thought it would further their cause they would just as willing fly a plane into a building. As the number of adherents to their mystical superstitions decline the remaining few will become far more radical and dangerous.

  28. says

It appears that my comment which was at least as good as the other comments already on this page was REMOVED? Is it just because I am a “Rev.” even though I IDENTIFY with the demands of the LGBT community? or what?

It was posted initially. So there was nothing technically wrong with it.

  29. paolo says

When comparing this prayer to the majority of the comments it’s quite clear who the bigots and haters are. It’s ironic how tolerance and inclusion should apply to everyone except those who reasonably and respectfully disagree with the LGBT worldview. Practice what you preach. Stop “hating” the archbishop. Stop being “bigoted” toward the Catholic Church. Start being “tolerant” of those who disagree with you. Start “accepting” those who hold a different point of view and be more “inclusive”.

Catechism Paragraph 2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.

  30. Concerned Catholic says

    James 4:11
“Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you.” NLT

    Matthew 7: 1-2
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

What we as Catholic believe is that Marriage is a sacred Sacramental union between a man, a woman and God as in the very beginning (Genesis). And on this we do not waiver. We are not homophobes or bigots, we are morally aware that homosexual behavior is against the law of God. Visit http://couragerc.net/ for more information on the efforts to help homosexuals live a life of chastity. This is showing a love and tolerance for the God-made person, but intolerant of their choice to act on their immoral desires – and lovingly giving them a way to “carry their cross.”
