Newark, NJ Mayor Condemns Treatment of Gays as Second-Class Citizens: VIDEO

Booker

Responding to a question about New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's call for a voter referendum on same-sex marriage, Newark mayor Cory Booker slammed Christie's suggestion and denounced the treatment of gays in the U.S. as second-class citizens.

Said Booker: "Dear God, we should not be putting civil rights issues to a popular vote, subject to the sentiments and the passions of the day...This is a fundamental bedrock of what our nation stands for."

  6. Awesome statement!

On a more shallow note, Booker has always "pinged" to me, he's a handsome man, and I'd love it he was on our team.

  9. Cory Booker is all kinds of awesome. Anybody who has not seen the Oscar nominated movie Street Fight needs to run out and rent it now. It's a documentary about his election.

  13. So brilliant impassioned and eloquent. Notice how he never mentions religion? Not once because that has NEVER been the issue. The majority should never be called to vote on minority issues! Period!

  14. Get this Corey Booker in the U.S. Senate ASAP.

Leadership like this is rare in politics today; Booker is a too-rare REAL patriot.

Admit he makes me proud to be an American...even if America isn't quite there yet.

  16. I've LOVED Cory Booker since I first saw "Street Fight" years ago (SPOILER ALERT: it actually wasn't about his election, it was about the race he lost prior to his election.) He is every and all kinds of awesome, and seems to be doing almost everything right as mayor.

A guy like this would be wasted in the do-nothing Senate or House. He needs to be elected governor of NJ, then on to POTUS.

  17. What an eloquent classy guy. These are the kinds of people we need in Congress, people who have courage, integrity and aren't afraid to call people out on their bigotry. This is the kind of guy we need leading the Democratic Party and the guy we need in the White House. This man has huge talent and he'll go far. Thank you, Mayor Booker, you're a rose among the thorns.

  18. I've loved Cory Booker from the first word I ever heard him utter. I worked in Newark for many years, and witnessed the improvements in that city since Booker took office. Really quite amazing. He genuinely cares about people - ALL people. I would love to see him go on to higher office. I'm sending that energy out to the universe.

  19. May I just play the devil's advocate because something doesn't add up...

    1) This isn't an off-the-cuff remark. He has speech note written in front of him and has to look at them to make sure he gets the quote right. He knew this question was coming.

    2) He somehow mentions every other minority ten times it seems like when discussing gay rights but yet can't manage to verbalize "gay and lesbian", "homosexual" or "LGBT"?

I found it very, very odd watching this that he neglects to say ANY word that relates to gays and lesbians yet he manages to list every other minority.

Sure his words sound great but I have feeling he knows exactly where the popular vote is falling these days. It's obnoxious to pretend this is an unprepared speech and even more obnoxious he can't say any word meaning "gay" when discussing gay rights.

Something just doesn't add up in this segment. If someone was in favor of gay rights they wouldn't avoid at all costs referring to the LGBT community in a prepared speech.

  20. Terrific, powerful, no-nonsense response, which is unlike most politicians who talk out of both sides and at the bottom of their mouths.

  21. Thanks Cory. Yes, we are treated like 2nd class citizens but they take our tax money fast enough!

  22. Michael, Mayor Booker has been a staunch advocate for LGBT equality including marriage for a long time. His commitment to us is beyond question.

He may have been prepared to talk about marriage, but he is in now way hedging on the issue. Mayor Booker is a man of strong principle who has vocally advocated for LGBT equality. And, yes, he has repeatedly said "gay" and "lgbt" in many venues.

  23. Excellent, articulate, powerful. Hooray!

  24. I have loved and admired Mayor Booker for years. He has been the best mayor Newark has ever had and one of the creme-de-la-creme of Democratic party. He is decent, honest, hard-working, moral, visionary, principled, honest and about the BEST under-the-radar politician in America today. I LOVE that man and he was been a stalwart and outspoken defender of LGBT people. He has never wavered in his support for us. And, he is RIGHT. Letting stupid, ignorant, religiously-motivated, hateful and bigoted people decide whether or not I can be a first-class citizen in my own country is horrendous and EVIL. Keep an eye on Corey Booker, folks. You are looking at a future POTUS. Love you, Mayor Booker! God Bless You!

  25. President Booker has a nice ring to it. Or Senator Booker. Governor Booker? He be a hell of lot better than NJs Governor who tries so hard to piss people off where as this Mayor wants to find solutions. New Jersey vote him in!
