Pepperdine University Blocks LGBT Club Because Homosexuality is Not 'God's Will'

Pepperdine University in Malibu has blocked the formation of a Gay-Straight Alliance called 'Reach Out' because Dean of Students Mark Davis says homosexuality is against "God's Will", the L.A. Weekly reports.

PepperdineFrom the Pepperdine Graphic newspaper:

From the administration’s perspective, the issue remains how Reach OUT will align with the Pepperdine mission and tradition. While Davis acknowledged that the relationship with the Churches of Christ is important, more central is honoring the biblical conviction that sexual activity should be reserved for a husband-wife relationship.

“Pepperdine seeks to be faithful to this teaching because we believe it is God’s will,” Davis said, “and therefore we cannot endorse another view or take a neutral position on sexual morality.  Although Reach OUT stated in its application that it has no position on sexual activity, we do not believe it is possible for a LGBT student organization to maintain a neutral position.”

A petition, now signed by more than 4,000 people, has more background:

Until now, the university’s policies have created an atmosphere of silence and anxiety that alienates not only the LGBT student population but also anyone concerned for their well-being. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) likewise expressed unease in its 2011 accreditation report that Pepperdine’s “climate of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’” prevents it from appearing “safe for open discourse.”

Administrators have established a Building Bridges committee in response to some of these concerns, but the committee is primarily generating recommendations that, even if adopted, would not provide LGBT students with a sense of community.

That is why on November 9 Reach OUT applied to become a student organization. On December 13, however, administrators rejected the application. This is the fourth time that a gay-straight alliance has been denied or discouraged from applying.

  1. Ken Starr's school, he's charming

  2. As long as they don't see 1 penny of Californians TAX money in support of this school, I'm fine with how they run it. However, we know that's not the case. Any government funding they get should not be used to discriminate with, especially against gays.

"...more central is honoring the biblical conviction that sexual activity should be reserved for a husband-wife relationship." - I guess they fired anyone who was divorced, right? As well as anyone committing adultery?

  3. Back in the early 90's, I did a safer sex demo for the Pepperdine dorm R.A.'s, complete with bringing a male volunteer up, strapping a dildo on him, and rolling the condom on with my mouth. Wonder how that would go over today?

  5. This is extremely important and interesting. This university is going to be critically pressured, likely to the point of having to change its mind. its policies. We will see the power of changing public opinion.

  6. Look, Did God create everything or not? Where we not all created in Gods image or not?

You can't have it both ways. So new truth is that God created man, except LGBT babies, they were created by Satan. Got it.

  7. Since when has Pepperdine ever known the will of God??? Plain truth is God mades us all LGBT included and Loves us all and if they are afraid of that they should loose their accreditation.

  8. Two points, Firstly, it's a private "christian" College, they can establish what ever policies they wish, however and secondly, If they receive any State or Federal Dollars then the policy NEEDS TO BE CHANGED!!

  9. I don't think "Christianity" is part of God's will.

  10. Phhht. Pretty sure God's one of us. Never married, never had a girlfriend. That Mary thing was done with artificial insemination.

  11. Let the whole world ask, Is Christianity part of God's will? The Christians are kidnappers, they kidnapped the diary of the Jews, which is the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, and made it their own.

  12. I know so, so many gay current and former Pepperdine students and most were very open and social in the frat system there so pretty much the whole student body has friends or know gay people. I don't see the point of the Dean/school to turning a blind eye to the fact these individuals exist.

  13. I wonder what would happen if they ignored their asshat dean and formed the organization among themselves anyway.

  14. I'm sure they could form their own association, but they wouldn't get any funding and they wouldn't be able to meet on campus. If the university wanted to play hardball, they might not be able to advertise in the school newspaper or be written up at all.

  15. Only take this comment at face value: Hollywood activist are going to blow this issue way out of proportion! The reason they are going to go overboard is due to the relative closeness to Hollywood. EVERYONE is going to be up in arms, because it's happening "in our back yard." I don't think there will be anything I can do to brace myself for the rhetoric that's about to come out of Hollywood.

  17. It is refreshing to hear that some people still honor God's commands above their own thoughts, desires or opinions. It's a Christian school- the LGBT students are not shunned as individuals, but they should not expect to be embraced as a university organization.

  20. @NSD
No NSD they are not honoring your false god of the Bible’s commandments. They allow women into the school. That would be against what your Bible teaches. Your Bible is NOT the word of God. It is the words of men.

  21. more central is honoring the biblical conviction that sexual activity should be reserved for a husband-wife relationship, husband-concubine relationship, husband-servant relationship, husband-slave relationship...why does Mark Davis leave these other bits out when he talks about biblical conviction?

  22. Well, another day, another story of supposed bigotry for all the bitchy, badly-aging queens around here to get all worked up about. Yeah, girlfriends, all of you can spout off with righteous indignation about the discrimination, but if a pretty frat boy type from Pepperdine showed up at your door late one muggy night in July, I doubt any of you would resist the urge to bang him, his idiotic school's anti-deluvian policies notwithstanding. I know some of the uppity bitches around here are gonna jump all over me for saying this, but hey, Tank's just keeping it real!

  23. @NSD: I'm sure Jesus is proud of your hate. Remember where he taught you that? (Hint: Look it up, if you even know how.)

Oh, I forgot: You just blindly do what whoever happens to be in any given pulpit tells you to do.
