One Million Moms Go After JC Penney for Hiring 'Open Homosexual' Ellen DeGeneres

One Million Moms, a subset of the hate group American Family Association, is attacking JC Penney for hiring Ellen DeGeneres as its spokesperson. Says the group in an action alert:

EllenFunny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families. More sales will be lost than gained unless they replace their spokesperson quickly. Unless JC Penney decides to be neutral in the culture war then their brand transformation will be unsuccessful.

Their marketing strategy is to help families shop and receive a good value for their money. Degeneres is not a true representation of the type of families that shop at their store. The majority of JC Penney shoppers will be offended and choose to no longer shop there. The small percentage of customers they are attempting to satisfy will not offset their loss in sales.

JC Penney has made a poor decision and must correct their mistake fast to retain loyal customers and not turn away potential new, conservative shoppers with the company's new vision.

One Million Moms is calling on its followers to call JC Penney and demand they replace DeGeneres. Their numbers are 972-431-8200 (customer service) and 972-431-1000 (corporate headquarters). We suggest you do the opposite.

  1. Perfect, I was going to go check out their sales this weekend. I'll be sure to spend a few hundred and FAX the receipt to JCP and thank them for supporting diversity.

  2. don't these people have anything better to do? I mean seriously.. who cares who JCPenny's spokes person is. I haven't set foot in a JCPenny in probably 15 years - I didn't even know they were still in business. That being said - These people really need to find something more productive to do with their time..

  4. They're right. Maybe they should have hired Calista Gingrich. Former mistress and third wife of 'family values' Newt.

Oh, that's right 1,000,000 Moms (translated means 2500 homophobes...) isn't represenative of who shops at Penny's either. These people shop at Dollar Tree.

  5. I don't think they realize how many middle aged women shop at JC Penney and, of those women, how many actually really love Ellen.

Ellen is a big hit not because of her sexual orientation, but despite her sexual orientation.

  6. I'd really like to see Maggie G touting some store on TV.

  9. These women should be in the nursery or kitchen, and not run their mouths in public. Didn't their husbands teach them anything?

  10. "We hate the sin, but love the sinner."

Except when you hire the sinner.

  11. "Unless JC Penney decides to be neutral in the culture war..."

You mean by hiring a spokesperson without considering their orientation alone disqualifies them?

These people never seem to listen to themselves.

  12. Can't wait until Ellen responds to the HATE message 1 million moms are projecting or respond by not responding at all. I don't think JC Penny is going to lose out from this rant. This is just a scare tactic to get a MAJOR company to support the losing battle the religious and conservatives have against gay rights. Their just not powerful enough, and their complaint could easily backlash. America loves Ellen and she could easily gain more money for JC Penny if they're not careful with their wording. Because Ellen is like what Oprah was at one time with her influence and MANY other moms will support her and listen.

  13. I haven't heard them complain about the make-up commercials Ellen does. I guess when you're barefoot and pregnant you don't wear a lot of make-up. After all, their husbands would beat them if they were to dress up and try to look nice for him because his small mind would tell him she is cheating. Just a bunch of Kooks!

  14. One million? MOre like 1000 frigid fat Christian cows and 150 self-loathing ex-gays wallowing in shame and denial.

  15. Ellen is going to wipe them away, in the nicest possible way, of course.

JC Penney was very wise to choose her. She represents the banality of mainstream America that the company so desperately needs to stay in business.

  16. Kiwi, I loved your comments.

I too thought that JC Penny was out of business or close to it. Maybe that was Sears. Anyway, apparently the hate group doesn't realize that Ellen is basically Oprah now and eminently likable. Hopefully JC Penny will stand its ground, though I assume there's a clause in the contract that they'll have to pay Ellen regardless. This can't have been unanticipated.

  17. Oh, and there is no f'ing way there are really 1 million mothers in that group. I've never even heard of it. I doubt NOM has anywhere near 1 million members, so this group? Nope.

  18. Ah - now I know what the women in latest JCPenny commercial are yelling about!

    Posted by: Kevin | Feb 1, 2012 2:25:31 PM

  19. they support the human rights campaign, and have the logo plastered on their web page. i doubt a hissy fit from a bunch of disgruntled repressed latent closet feminists will make a dent in their policy. it's more likely JCP market to consumers who are more liberal and that's why they advertise support of a liberal organization, to increase their social clout in the first place. but yes, an email/phone call supporting what they already know to be true will help verify they are headed in the correct direction and their compass is intact.

  20. I think there are many of these groups that are small and pathetic but they are loud. Many companies, even if they support gay rights, just wont want the headache. The whole squeaky wheel thing. In this case Ellen is so big and well liked I don't think it will matter but it might in other scenarios.

We've seen a lot of progress over the last years and that's when the loonies start to foam at the mouth. Why don't these "family values" people ever get up in arms over homeless or hungry children?

  21. It's all so ... old.

Honestly, more and more I am actually encouraged by the tone and nature of our opponents.

They haven't changed in 25 years. "Open homosexual" - really?! How do they think this sounds to anyone under 60?

Like JCP didn't research this decision to death.

  22. Just look at the ratings of the Ellen show. It's clear that America doesn't like Ellen, or something.

  23. well super xtianista loving sears/ k-mart mega corp is closing 100-150 stores nation wide while JC penny who hired an out proud lesbian is opening a new store at the local mall near me

Hmmmmm strange how that is :-P

Posted by: say what | Feb 1, 2012 2:38:03 PM

  24. How arrogant of this group to think that all of JC Penny's customers think like they do, and see Ellen as nothing more than a symbol or her sexual orientation.

    Posted by: cadence | Feb 1, 2012 2:38:45 PM

  25. @SayWhat -- Your math lesson literally made me laugh out loud. Thanks. :)
